This is the second in a short series I am doing on the logging we are currently doing.
The emerald ash borer has wreaked havoc on our ash trees in our 100 acre woods here in Northeast Iowa.
They have killed every ash tree that we have.
Last fall, I completely used up 5-13oz spray cans of the bright marker paint marking all of the dead trees to be harvested.
The trees have very little value as they can only be used to make pallets.
It has been a real pleasure working with this 2 man crew.
Kenny is the business owner , the H.M.F.I.C, and operates the TimberJack skidder that drags the logs out and up into a pile for the trucks to come and load them and haul them to the saw mill.
Jake is the lumber jack that does all the cutting. These two guys are true professionals and it is a lot of fun to watch them work.
Thanks for watching. If you haven't already done so, please click that like button and subscribe to the channel. We love having you watch the videos and hope that you come back for more.
Life is good!
Even better in the tractor seat!

Wired seeing nice long logs, cut short.. and a hard weed grapple. Used to be a few of them around here, but they get bent up loading big wood. Even the hard weeds here, are shipped long. The longer the log, the better the mills will pay per board foot.. because they have more options for milling. Pretty cool! Thank you Gary!!

Got em! Now to wait for it to quit raining so we can get them hauled out. They have to come out through a pretty precarious spot, tippy and steep. The trucking is independent of them. He was pretty ranged good too though. Pretty impressive loading skills.

@@realSaPLife , not sure what your concern is here. The lumber is kiln dried. If you’re worried about an infestation of the beetles, their damage is done. They already killed the trees.

Their big skidder is a grapple. Kenny said this Timberjack is much easier to get around in heavy timber like we have. The big one is a John Deere.😮
@tractortalkwithgary1271
@tractortalkwithgary1271 3 месяца назад
There are some big advantages to using this type of grapple. For one, you can let cable out and pull logs out from places you can’t go Like for instance across a gully. That big elm got hung up on the stump. They were able to release cable and maneuver the skidder into another angle to get it away from the stump Kenny told me that he prefers thi smaller Timber Jack skidder over the bigger John Deere because in a heavy growth timber such as ours, it is easier to get around with and does less damage to the remaining forest.

Good day Gary. It's a terrible time for ash trees. I was told by a logger that ash lumber is a favorite of Amish furniture manufacturers. They like it for its straight grain and stability. It moves very little once it is dried. It also makes a good firewood. Thanks for showing your ash harvest. Enjoy the Journey - Cheers
@tractortalkwithgary1271
@tractortalkwithgary1271 3 месяца назад
Thanks Bob. Hadn’t heard that about the Amish furniture making. We were fortunate to have a market for it. I look for that to come to an end soon because of the sheer volume of ash trees in this part of the country. None of these trees are going to escape this. Every ash tree in my woods has been infected and killed by this. The real kicker is this emerald ash borer beetle… comes from China!
