In this week's Cache Walk we are visiting Kells and Dublin, Ireland to find links to The Book of Kells. It's one of the worlds most famous books. Come with us on our search for its links to our medieval past.
Our thanks to Thomas Keyes for permission to use his video clips of the making of an illuminated manuscript. You can see his great work and at:

We went to Ireland for our honeymoon in 1998. I remember walking down this beautiful library and the Book of Kells was indeed on display at its end. Thank you for showing the original location, nice geowalk video.

My heritage is English, Irish and Scottish, so I appreciate seeing these places through your videos. Maybe I’ll get there myself someday. :)

Nice historical walk. I love those stone towers and the stone house (Columbus house) that you showed. Amazing architecture.

We love them too. There seem to be a few round towers in Ireland by Columba's House is the only one like this we come across.

I have really been enjoying these videos on your trip to Ireland. I would love to visit some day, but for now I will travel vicariously through your videos. Was there any information about how long it would have taken to sculpt one of the Celtic Cross headstones?

Glad you like them. No we have never seen anything about the time it took. Would love to know too. Did find this, 'Before it was taken from the quarry, the cross was roughed out, a process that helped to reduce the weight. Key decisions about geometry and the layout of the carved panels were made at this point, indicating that the master sculptor must have been present from the start.' Must have taken a considerable length of time.
