I play a Magic: the Gathering Online Legacy league with Gleaming Geardrake. This Izzet artifact aggro deck is the beatdown, with Urza's Saga tokens, Gleaming Geardrake, Syr Ginger, and Patchwork Automaton threatening to end games FAST. I love how this deck looks crazy good on turn 1 and then you die to the exact sequence of plays that beat you in at least 3 different games.

across Phil's videos, there's some decks that feel incredibly hard to impossible to beat, and Doomsday is definitely one of them lol

@@kurtgrgelwrx8376 its because the best way to beat doomsday is a blue counterspell suite like dazes and force of wills. Phil doesnt tend to play many control decks and doomsday is already pretty resiliant to being stopped once the doomsday goes off.

@@llamarama6976 This! The problem is that Phil plays a lot of janky aggro-adjacent decks. It's the classic Rock-Paper-Scissors: Combo beats Aggro, Aggro beats Control, Control beats Combo. If he played more control, he wouldn't worry about Doomsday, but Initiative, Robots and Goblins would be giving him fits.

@@joegaylord87 that and specifically doomsday or show and tell decks have their payoffs at three mana or more. Since phils decks tends to play stompy or stax style cards if he has anti combo these specific rype of combo decks dont really care about being affevcted by trinisphere or chalice which more storm based decks would. Doomsday or show and tell decks trade off sheer speed for a level of inevitability that can only be outbeaten by control decks that have a greater inevitability due to their card advantage

Deck donator here! Im glad you had fun. The main thoughts i have for dealing with ensaring bridge is pyrite spellbomb or if you are feeling extra spicy dragonspark reactor (seems too ambitious). I also wonder if there is any merit to a patchwork automaton aggro deck running reinforced ronin?

I love how half of this deck is just a standard deck. In fact, I currently have a Jeskai version of this deck as my standard deck, using Skullbombs instead of Baubles

The way gleaming geardrake is two artifacts for urza's saga constructs seems super valuable. You're right about the tension between sacrificing the artifacts and keeping them, but I think it isn't totally a bad thing. You can keep the artifacts in play for as long as is reasonable, and then sacrifice them when you need redraws or damage in the air.

That's my thoughts as well but the other thing that really got me thinking about this deck is how it plays with stuff like thopter sword combo since you're Already sacrificing artifacts for value to gleaming Drake. But the thing about that is that now. In the situation like that you're actually adding value to the board. Through a sacrifice outlet and. That gives you the ability to play cards like daretti, ingenious iconoclast, and just to add a bit of spice run baleful strix

At 42:06 there was the interesting question of tutoring Mite vs Needle. Mite loses to a 2nd sneak, but does play around removal hitting pithing needle, which in hindsight is an obvious choice given they had the meltdown, but not without that info. I do think the way they openly shoved sneak into a 2 counter saga suggested having an answer to needle tho, since otherwise it's a pretty clear punt on their part to not consider what options you have in your tutor package.

There’s also that artifact that can add counters to turn their chalice on 0 into chalice on 1 since your curve is 0, 2, 3 and skips right over 1 unless you draw shadow spear. Briant Cook and someone else uses that in black saga storm. Seems relevant if a goblin or delver deck plays chalice on 0 against you since you punish them with their own chalice (without being unable to easily cast chalice on 1 with all of your 0 mana mana rocks and baubles being countered)

It’s a 1 mana artifact and chalice on 1 is normally not bad for this deck so it would be unlikely for an opponent to pay chalice on one against a deck that’s all 0, 2, and 3 mana except for a single artifact that can be tutored with Urza’s Saga so when they chalice on 0 and turn off all the 0s like lotus petal, chrome mox, and the baubles this if in hand could be played right away for 1 mana than later when it becomes relevant activated to turn the chalice on 0 to a chalice on 1 allowing you to have 1 more artifact for the rest of the deck but to also unlock all the 0s with no downside except for playing an otherwise unnecessary card. And since this deck does play creatures it’s not a dead card because it comes into play with 6 counters and with enough mana and keys could put those 6 counters on a creature already in play and add more of a clock.

I think that falls into the category of "working too hard." Broadside is just good on its own; no need to add the extra slots to make a good card better when Birgi would just be a weak card on its own.

21:30 needle on the one ring seems irrelevant because it doesn't stop the protection. I would have needled LED or Edge of Autumn to disrupt the combo.

At 31:10 you did cast bauble which doesn't do anything on this board while having hurkyl recall in hand also knowing that opponent will cast lattice next turn. However, you should have kept 3 mana open, on response to lattice float all your mana, then cast hyrkyl recall after lattice enters obliterating opponents board, because lattice allow to spend mana as it is mana of any color, no matter what it is.

Welp Phil, in round 4 game 3 you could have got the hay-weir might which you stated that you were be-grudgingly bringing in incase of sneak attack pass lines, and then went and got needle off of saga even though you had mox opal for green mana. maybe you thought the damage was better, but it seems wrong to me.

I wonder if the first opponent was playing a painters servant/grind stone deck. That would explain the pyros. And perhaps using grind stone + can trips could maybe manipulate the top of deck enough to make counterbalance work. The delver doesnt make sence in this theory though.

It's kinda shocking to me how much of this deck is standard legal. All your 2 drops -the ravager is legal in standard, as well as the Akal Pakal. Broadside was also printed last year, though in a suplemental product.

After watching the league, this looks cool, but I wonder if it's better with some more 8 cast elements. We very easily turn on metalcraft, and throwing thought monitors with broadside seems busted.

30:57 am I missing something I feel like you forgot what hurklys recall does? why didn't you hurklys recall their ensnaring bridges and the trinispheres back to their hand to kill the Karn and dump your hand of 0 drops? They don't have any cards in their hand either. Even when you conceded at 31:45 you still had recall in your hand, you could have been holding it up and once they went to play the lattice you float mana, and then bounce their entire board since it will all be artifacts.
