We buy a Mk2 Astra GTE convertible for spares and go to pick it up with the recovery truck

We were told about an Astra GTE convertible that had been stripped down and for sale locally so went out and did a deal on it.
After picking it up with the good old Iveco Daily recovery truck, we strip various bits off the Astra which will hopefully be used on another one. We now have a full fuel injection set up plus manual gearstick and pedal box so even a 1.3 auto could be converted into something sweet. Now it's just a matter of waiting for a suitable candidate to appear...
If you'd like any of the bits you see in the video get in touch, the seats are the same as a prefacelift MK3 Cavalier SRi with black trim.

Subscribed - great, entertaining content. Try explaining why it’s so good to watch a Scotsman knocking around in old Vauxhall’s to someone else and they’d probably think you’re nuts. I now want an old Vauxhall of my own again!

@@OnceDrivenForeverSmitten well my brother started there in 1973 as an apprentice, there was 12000 people working there, now there's only 1000! So I don't see PSA keeping it open. I worked for the V6 engine plant for 12 years as an engine technician. Durability tests and warranty work. A colleague and I bought all the factory tools and ran a website V6 technicians, we still have all the tools and the knowledge but not seen a V6 in years till I found your channel

It's a shame that chop top Astra was so crispy as they're properly rare now, but they really didn't hold up well in the UK. I remember seeing 3 and 4-year old ones that closely resembled a Tetley tea bag... That steering wheel on the Astra is the same as your Cavalier CD would have had originally, so if the leather is in good shape then it might be worth giving it a good clean up and some hide food and replace the plastic rim item currently there...
@OnceDrivenForeverSmitten
@OnceDrivenForeverSmitten 3 года назад
It's a plastic wheel, same as the early MK3 Cavalier SRi. Keep meaning to send off the CD wheel for recovering as I have someone to do it. I do love that facelift threespoke though. Vauxhall made some great steering wheels in the 80s and early 90s 🧐
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 3 года назад
@@OnceDrivenForeverSmitten I never realised that pattern steering wheel ever came with a plastic rim. I guess I just never saw a really early mk3 Cavalier, they took a while to catch on down here and a lot of the Cavalier buyers were queuing up to buy run out mk2s. I've only ever seen them with leather rims in the CDi and SRi, which I drove a lot of in period when they were coming off the fleets as I had a weekend job collecting cars from auction for a local garage that specialised in Cavaliers. The CDi was a properly nice way to travel... A friend of mine had a semi-facelift mk3 2.0 Li saloon that he bought from the original owner and slightly modified to suit his tastes. He had the same steering wheel as you currently have in the CDi, but with a leather rim. Apparently it came from a late pre-facelift Astra mk3 SRi estate that he found in the local scrappy with extremely terminal rust. That Cavalier was a bit of a monster, although it was only an 8-valve it wasn't short of power and with only minor mods it was putting 145 horses on the road. It was a bit of an oddity being an L but without a sunroof so there was speculation that it might have been a cancelled order police car, so maybe it already had a tweaked engine out of the factory, as most police vehicles do... Yes, Vauxhall/Opel really used to do some great steering wheels in that period, and it was so easy to swap bits from different cars in the range to really make something unique to you...
@Elvis_TheKing
@Elvis_TheKing 3 года назад
@gosportjamie Completely agree. My dad had a couple of cavaliers back in the early 90s, both with nice 3-spoke steering wheels. That 4-spoke airbag thing Vauxhall plonked into just about everything from 1995 onwards wasn’t quite so appealing!

Had an F-reg MK2 1.6 convertible after I foolishly sold my Belmont SRi Never knew why Vauxhall didn't offer the SEH or XE in the GTE versions of these cars - mind you, the amount of chassis flex/scuttle shake they produced, I expect they thought a mighty 130 and 150 hp was too much.

Pretty sure your omega is the twin of the holden commodore VT 1998-2000 station wagon. This came with a 3.8L ecotec V6 (Buick) which could be fitted with a supercharger or V8. You might like to try to get your hands on one after checking into the specs.
