I've been playing the shit out of this in my spare time and it's very interesting how a lot of NL's choices are diametrically opposed to my own. It's also interesting how NL tends to avoid any of the techs or doctrines that could legitimately make his life easier.

I think the reason people generally are less satisfied today is very simple: access to information. People today know too much. They compare themselves to the top percentile in every category, they know the details about major crimes in every little town across their home country, they are exposed to the political machinations of the ruling class, they know play-by-play of distant wars, they get daily reports on deaths to diseases, they have a constant parade of advertising telling them that they need better stuff to solve problems they didn't even know they had, etc etc. Any fact that a person might want to know, we have at our fingertips. The vast majority of that information will only make you angry, scared, or depressed. Who made that monkey's paw wish, eh?
