The other thing is, if the laowhy channel is taken critical, all we can accuse the ccp in that case, which, the party would want to play it down, donald is the same, but worse, and far less competent in handling he crisis. Which gives his accusing "china" , just proection, since the start, even i there is some truth. Hell even the same reason to want to "play it down". And yes there is enough evidence tosay the ccp lied and is horrible and does evil stuff, but my take is, trumps wants to be that competent doing it. We know he is inspired by horrible governments, likely inspired based on his my kampf example, took inspiration there, his friendships with questionable governments, Thats what he wants to be,appearently, comparing him to that austrian born german, is fully valid, thats what h wants to be, in my opinion.

Well said. Whether or not you think his reasons were justified, his action - or rather inaction - caused an effect that rippled throughout America. The argument about his soul has always irked me as well. His reasons for doing what he did lend little credence to the ultimate point: Donald Trump actively fought against life saving decisions, leading over 200,000 Americans to die.
@taliyahofthenasaaj7570
@taliyahofthenasaaj7570 3 года назад
Not to undermine your comment, but I think the ultimate point is: "The structures in place gave Donald Trump the power to actively fight against life saving decisions. Is this a structure under which you want to live? Should a single person ever have that much power?" Donald Trump has clearly been bad, but should he be a bartender in a town in the middle of nowhere, he wouldn't have the ability to fight against life saving decisions. It's all the power that was given to him that ultimately made his bad character have such bad consequences.
@fizzgryphon4849

@@taliyahofthenasaaj7570 I don't think you've undermined my comment at all! In fact, I think you've made an excellent addition to it. I love hearing your addition to it and I think it's very, very much something that needs to be heard.

I'm upset that we're at 231,000. We're fast approaching another benchmark, but yeah, "we're rounding the curve". I feel that a lot of people have been focused on him as president, and his antics, but there hasn't been nearly enough focus on the lives that we've lost in my opinion.

It's rhetoric, as it always is in discourse. It is a somewhat hidden appeal to emotion. It comes up a lot in regards to racism, because it speaks to a base in denial. But they're not really racist, it's just that their policies/actions/whatever dispropionately target marginalised ethnic groups! It doesn't stand up to any scrutiny. Even if you concede that the person is not racist (which you should never do unless evidence to the contrary is given), it literally does not matter. Their actions matter, their actions are racist.
@Kino_Cartoon
@Kino_Cartoon 3 года назад
@@gizmodobaggins7040 Being racist isn't a character trait. It's a description of behavior and I already said this countless times because so many people don't think like that. If a person is racist just by a character trait but never acts or avoids acting racist than you can't tell if they are racist. But if they are acting on racism that's the moment when someone gets criticized for being racist.

I'm reminded of the conversation surrounding the revelation that the US was torturing people suspected of terrorism. People attacked the practice by saying that it was ineffective. They pointed to times when it failed to produce meaningful information, or when the information they did get was false. The whole time I wanted to tell them to stop saying that, to stop talking about it in those terms. Because by saying that torture was bad because it didn't work, in inherently left open the possibility that some torture technique WOULD work and suggested that in that case it would be okay. The only right way to condemn torture is to *condemn torture,* not to suggest that there are more effective options.
@stobie9063
@stobie9063 3 года назад
Lmao this always kinda bothered me too!! They're trying to appeal to the other side using logistics, ignoring the fact that if someone is okay with literal torture they're probably not going to be persuaded by logic tbh. The main issue is that certain groups of people have been intentionally dehumanized to the point where anything goes, and if the authorities say it's okay it must be okay!! If someone thinks like that they don't just need to be handed basic facts, because there's much bigger problems to deal with that need to be pulled out by the roots.

@epicmarschmallow5049
@epicmarschmallow5049 3 года назад
I think the reason that argument is often pushed forward is that most people I've seen who are in favour of torture take that position because they believe the information gained is worth it; they position torture as a sort of necessary evil. The argument that it doesn't work is a counter to that line of thinking. It's not necessary because it doesn't work, so it's just evil
@meligoth
@meligoth 3 года назад
If torture was a method of last resort when it comes to an extreme circumstance like terrorism, then it might get a pass in the grand scheme of things. Unfortunately the practice is the equivalent of a stop and frisk, but instead of just patting down a random person In hopes of finding contraband, they just physically and mentally torture til they get a confession to a crime. Recently the FBI foiled a plot for the kidnapping of the governor of Michigan, and that took quite a bit of gumshoe work, getting informants, surveillance, intercepting communications, but not a single soul tortured to stop what was basically a terrorist attack. Sure we cannot say that torture never works, but it's success rate in gathering good Intel is abysmal.

The words "It's his right to because we can't stop him" reminds me of this weird similar moment I had talking to a Trumper. It was about the rally in Tulsa, (before it was cancelled). I asked a Trumper why on earth Trump wanted a rally in that specific place on Juneteenth of all days. His answer seared itself into my brain, "Because he can." There was no other justification suggested, that was all the Trumper said, and he said it proudly. I can't forget about that. Trump cancelled the rally which makes the situation even more convoluted, was shitting on the history of racial oppression really a line he couldn't cross? It feels more like a line he chose not to. I don't think if that rally had happened anything would be different today. It's this weird intersection of "strong man" leader mentality and the way we deal with moral judgements that was outlined in this video. You can project all the racism you want onto this "mental image" of Trump but it doesn't matter, because we already decided as a society a POTUS has "the right" to do these things, and then "strong man" politics determined that if the strong man is able to do it, he SHOULD do it.

Hey, I just wanted to point out that at around 6:55 you are making a contra-positive error. In formal logic inverses work like this: Stole dog -> Bad thing Didn't do a bad thing -> Did not steal dog. What you said in contrast assumes that not stealing the dog demonstrates the person having not done a bad thing, which it doesn't assuming there are more than one bad thing. I know this sounds ticky-tack, I am only writing this because you clearly put a lot of thought into your videos and I am a fan. So I hope pointing it out helps.

Hey, Big Joel, I am currently watching your videos for over a month now, and it is giving me a different perspective of certain arguments or topics that are discussed by Jordan Peterson, Steven Crowder, and other conservative main-stream individuals. As of right now, I agree to certain aspects that are considered, "Conservative," while other aspects are are considered, "Liberal." I am sort of in a journey trying to figure out what I value for our society, what is classified as right or wrong (besides common sense, of course), and as well as committing to individual thinking, but it is getting more and more difficult when watching arguments made by Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson. Sometimes when I watch Jordan Peterson, I think, "Oh, I guess he has a point," and so I immediately agree with him; but when I watch or read individuals like you, my mind shifts into, "Wait, this person has a point," which changes my perspective from then after. I assume that for you and everyone else would probably label me as a blind sheep, and in this case, you are right. I am always trying to find the exceptions of specific arguments presented by politicians, analysts, and commentators, instead of blindly following when given sources or statistics. Like, for abortion, I agree that it should be legal, as we do not know the situation a women is undergoing--either suffering from poverty, being a victim of rape, or perhaps dying from giving birth to the baby. While, putting the factor aside, the women may put the baby for adoption (when it is at the stage of developing the characteristics of human life); and while orphanages or adoption agencies may or may not be the best place for a child, as people may argue with this, but it surely gives a better option than aborting the baby. Of course, I understand that it is the women's choice, so I am not willing to push what I believe now into women's lives. However, back into the mind of this rant, I just...I do not know what to believe, what to take as true or false, knowing that there is either one way to counter argue or debunk an argument or topic. In any case, though, it is great to receive another perspective from the other side of a topic, and I appreciate the content you are making for this platform.

I was in your shoes a few years back. What helped me was to get away from the talking heads on either side of the political spectrum and simply learn how to reason. We all think we're innately born with the ability, but what we're born with is severely limited. Common sense for example doesn't exist. All that actually means is "here are some things that I personally take for granted without questioning them, and I expect others to do the same." And yet because we are born hearing the phrase and believing it to be true, we all believed common sense was something almost concrete and separate from humanity. When I realized that it was not, I suddenly became very aware of how often people hide the loose ends of their "flawlessly logical" arguments behind the phrase "It's just common sense." Anyway, I would highly encourage you to watch or read some material on epistemology, logic, and fallacies. It'll take potentially months before you don't have to look up specific definitions anymore, but it's worth it. Being able to think logically and, like a math problem, be able to get to the bottom of whatever rubbish is being told to me is incredibly helpful. Of course we'll still be fooled, we're all human, but the relief you'll feel when you're able to understand why something someone said doesn't feel quite right and put a name to the fallacy they're using will feel overwhelming at times.

moral judgement aside, I don't think it's necessarily incorrect to assume that panic causes economic crashes that cause more panic, and that preventing panic affecting the economy could cause fewer people to greedily take all they can grab leaving others empty handed, like what happened with the toilet paper crisis. Caring about the economy to the benefit of human life is possible, and the fact that the economy has alienated the people who make it possible due to mega-corporations which hoard wealth and the billionaires whose livelihood is made possible by the exploitation of workers means that many of us down here making zilch just want to watch the whole economy burn, and rightfully so. But economies are not inherently evil, they're just a network of the exchange of goods. So yeah basically caring about the economy isn't inherently bad, since it affects everyone, the poor especially. and yeah it is frustrating that his government and in fact most US governments previously cares more about xyz big company's tax breaks and profits than the people they govern, and "caring about the economy" is often code for "being cozy with big businesses." But I guess the real point is no matter what his motivation was he didn't decrease panic, he was negligent, and his professions against the danger of covid were themselves dangerous. There are ways to decrease panic and treat a danger with respect. if a starving tiger is in the room and the person in charge wants to decrease panic they can ask if someone knows how to calm and tame the tiger while others try to find a way out, or they can say "what tiger?" while people get killed. idk

@willcrossley
@willcrossley 3 года назад
it matters whether he thought he was doing the right thing if your goal is to decide whether he is a bad person or not - whether he should be punished. but its not relevant to whether he should have such power or whether he should be in office. A president with good intentions who constantly makes bad decisions that harm a lot of people should not be in office.
@yonatanbeer3475
@yonatanbeer3475 3 года назад
@@willcrossley is that even correct though? Like, if a doctor makes the best possible evaluation of the medical evidence and does a surgery which ends up causing harm, I don't think we should thus conclude that he shouldn't be doing surgery anymore. On the other hand, if a quack does some unscientific nonsense that ends up causing harm, that definitely is evidence that they shouldn't be doing medicine. The motives matter because even with perfect motives sometimes you make a utilitarianly bad move.
@willcrossley
@willcrossley 3 года назад
@@yonatanbeer3475 but in both of those examples the actual quality of the person as “good” or “bad” is irrelevant. If the quack who uses completely unscientific methods is really passionate about helping people and really thought he was doing the right thing, he still shouldnt be doing medicine. and if the doctor who follows all the right methods actually hates helping people and only does it for the money, hes still helping people so the fact that hes doing for personal gain is irrelevant.

This doesn’t really engage with the actual problem at hand - you suggest that this clip shows an analyst framing the debate in terms of motivations, which allows a pro-Trump opposition to frame their response in terms of unprovable suggestions rather than the facts. But counterfactuals aren’t facts either. The alternative, “Trump lied, 250k Americans died”, gets reframed constantly as “those deaths were inevitable, and it would have been worse if Trump had been honest, as evidenced by his lying about it”. It’s not just counterfactuals either- many Trump supporters don’t believe the 250k deaths are real, and some don’t believe Covid *in general* is real. The trouble isn’t “Interference by Trump surrogates is made possible by moral framings of factual issues”. It’s “factual issues are themselves debatable/uncertain, and that interference is inevitable”. Trump’s motivation isn’t in a separate, less grounded, less provable category than facts, because there is no consensus on what “facts” are either. Your suggestion assumes a conclusion of “Trump’s lies are connected to many thousands of Americans dying”. That assumption is very clearly true, but so is, “Trump did not lie due to sincere worry for the American people”. Neither can be objectively proven to people caught in a particular narrative.

The motive can be seen in the words. The word "Down play" hints at more than "preventing a panic". That word in political sense comes packed with the motive: "don't give the necessary attention to the issue". If DJT was truly concerned with the "panic" related costs of the issue, he would not use a term like "down play". the "play" portion of the compound word gives away the "game". He isn't concerned with the actual impacts of Covid-19, but concerned with how Covid-19 will affect his meta-game of "re-election". Panic is applied in the "stock market panic" pretense of the word. and the fact that DJT has never cared about "panic" in the Joe-everyman fighting for a pack of toiletpaper sense of the word. Never, not once. In fact, DJT has stoked panic as a political tool. It's a cornerstone of his political strategy. I mean, you could give DJT additional totally undeserved philosophical cover for lying about the pandemic. You could. Not super productive.
