He choose a powerful effect for a catch-up mechanic, rather than just saying "this card deals 8000 points of effect damage." or "banish your entire deck." or "I play up to 5 cards from my extra deck ignoring their summon conditions."

I mean, true... But I would argue, that's partly because we were kids. I'd bend the rules with bullshit, knowingly inconsistent interpretations (and translations if I had japanese cards), but only if I knew I could get away with it/the other person didn't have a strong enough grasp of the rules to call me on it. You're not going to get away with that with 2 adults who know the rules (unless they're just toying around like in this video). Granted, a consequence of the game coming out in an early stage internet was that there wern't as many sources you could use to sus out oddly written or confusing cards. So these kinds of debates probably were more common, even amongst players who had a strong grasp of the rules.

Honestly, for being normal monsters in the hand cards, they weren't too bad. But jokes aside, Larry actually had a cohesive deck somehow while yours looked like Garnet city lol.

Yugioh fakes have always been awful. I think it's a liabilty thing - they can always claim if Konami try to sue 'These aren;t Yugioh cards, they're actually our OC creation Shmugiyoh cards. Totally different!'.

The ones we had back in the day were awesome, basically incomprehensible abominations that were almost entirely original with fake art and all. Everything read like it just came out of 15 different translators and the guy that made them was only vaguely aware of the concept of the game.
