Freaking awesome video! Can't wait to see you tweak it. I used a GPS superpipe and Mikuni VM22-133 on mine. This resulted in a major increase in performance. @redbeards garage: Any chance you'd consider this as your first stage on the Ghost?
I wrench on these engines and I’m telling you with red beards garage videos and some simple tools you can build your engine very easy. The predator 212 is the simplest four stroke engine in the world to work on. To me they are as simple as doing a top end on a Yamaha blast two stroke and your not going broke doing it. Red beard has the best step by step video on building a 212 I have ever seen.
Definitely not much of a slouch. Still not much to sneeze at that's for sure. Definitely nice to know that one could see 9.8-10hp with one out of the box without doing much.
Great series on the ghost I agree with you all the way on a building a motor yourself I think you get way more out of it can't wait to see you put the 224 stroker motor on their I have one close to it be anxious to see what kind of numbers it turns I'll be looking forward to Future series keep it coming great job
I couldn't resist getting a Ghost just to check it out. The Box Stock Project engine is definitely faster on a kart. I don't have a dyno, but I can feel the difference and the clock doesn't lie. I did put in a billet flywheel but have not changed the rod on the Ghost. The BSP engine has billet rod and flywheel. The biggest difference, like you mentioned in this video is the carburetor, given that the valves are set up similarly. I swapped them out but still the BSP was a stronger out of the corner and faster to rev. It was an interesting experiment but if I could only buy one, I would go with the BSP and build it with the billet parts. I think you get a slightly better engine, and you know what's in it. They are likely made by the same factory, along with Tilitson and several other brands, so it boils down to how you build and set it up more than the quality. You can do a lot with any of these if you do the homework when you build them. Usually, I race in LO206 anyway and those engines are great, well built long lasting strong pulling and you don't have to do much to them to be competitive in the class. Do some valve maintenance [springs, maybe lightly hone the valve seat] change your oil every couple of hours of runtime (Amsoil Briggs Oil is best in my opinion) and you can get what you need to race and have a ball. I think the L in LO206 stands for LAZY... that's me.
Great video. Loved it. Loved the comparison. Really curious now on the 196cc that typically comes with the coleman bikes! Let’s see if that thing will make similar numbers with similar mods as road to horsepower series! Awesome video brother
@@patarmstrong3582 mine did as well and I just used a sleeve to up the size. Works great. I’ve actually hit 66mph with my 196 that came with the bike AND that was with the stock clutch it came with. 10/40 gearing, 265 fire cam, flat top piston, billet rod/flywheel, 26lb springs and home grown port work. Pretty cool if you ask me. My buddy has a ghost and could only hit 61mph. So I’m thinking maybe my little engine ain’t doing too bad!!
If I just wanted to bolt on a tank and exhaust and ride I would get the Ghost. If I wanted to build for more than stock power I would get the 224. I did get a 224 and am happy with it. Not an easy build because of all the clearancing needed. Nice torque from that engine. More good options... Ducar 212. Comes with a PVL flywheel. Similar to the Ghost is the Wildcat 223. They say it has nice power right out of the box.
Thanks for the info on the Ghost 212 . I have not had a mini bike / pull start ever. So I think it would be kool to have a mini bike for playing around camping. Then I don't alway have to ride the big name brand bikes. It's always nice to see what the bang for your buck. Around Bend Oregon out on 2 wheels
for the same $$$$$, esp after including the $150 for the header accessory package ($450 total + taxes) ... a person can have a PRETTY HOT 212 PREDATOR and a gas tank. CM .265 cam $65, side cover gasket $5, cast alum flywheel $76, billet rod $76, $25 for 22mm PV carb and air filter. .009" head gasket. 22# springs, spiffy the motor up. oil, gas... and jet kit for the carby since it comes with 99 jet when it needs a 125'ish jet to make it RUN and not fall down at 5500 rpms.
I love my 212 non hemi predator motor on a motorized it hasn't failed me yet thank you for showing me what the 212 ghost would be on the dyno it just shows me that it is nothing special thank you again
Mr red beard I have to share this 20 years ago when the Honda design was just catching on there were no billet rods we took Honda rods and double the tourqe from 9 ftlbs to 18 with stock bolts flattop piston and gapless rings with compression ring machine to accept an oil ring in a groove on top ring it had a 308 cam stock rockers with straps welded to the sides to keep them from breaking cut the head 100 thousands it would hold 340 pound of compression with stock Honda flywheel I turned it 8500 very often not saying that was right but never exploded a flywheel tilitson carb it was a beast for back then and had to set our own flywheel key ignition timing was 40 degrees it would only run eight mile or it would overheat
Really helpful. Just bought my first minibike and I am considering what to do with it. The ghost is tempting because I am not a gearhead, but it’s a good reason for me and my 10 year old son to get out and learn about engines together.
Very interesting. Looks like it may be a difference in cam. The ghost has better performance at lower rpm’s where the built engine outperforms at higher rpm’s where the ghost drops off. Super cool video.
on the point of Flywheels and ignition timing. can you do a comparison on the RTH engine as it is but with stock timing, 28 degs and 32 degs? it would be very interesting to me personally to see the effects that has on the torque curve in particular
I'd love to see a 212 similar to my 212 on your dyno, I'm quite curious what my engine build can put down. Tried and true combo, non hemi with mod2 with 1.3 ratio rockers, 26lb springs flat top piston and all the billet goodies. I spin it to 8250 but it lays over after 7500, would be nice to see a graph and compare it to my butt dyno
Great video. Love the whole process of breaking in and then doing pulls. Would love to see a comparison between Predator Ghost vs. Briggs Animal Lo206.
Killing me with the pull starting. Your gonna snap that rope boy. Lol. Love what your doing and thank you for having a video with the answers I was looking for.
can we get split screen shots of the dyno so we can see closer? thank u for all the time u spending showing and teaching us, i apricate it, again thank u.
I just bought a Coleman BT 200 and went straight to HF and got the ghost. You’re right, I just wanted a bolt on. I am well capable of a build and have the tools. At that, almost double the hp. Hope the CVT holds it. I have to check the max rpm on the trash Chinese one supplied. I see a Comet CVT in my future. It just doesn’t end. The Ghost did sound good. Thank you for your great work.
Years ago when I was young say 16 or 17, I bought a go cart frame and the frame was made 1.5" drilling pipe. The gocart had 2 motor mounts and the gears for the axle were welded in place. I sold the gocart because I had no money, my friend bought the card because they had a motor for it, of course they were cheap like me and could not afford a clutch for it so they put a straight gear, so if you push start it it would go. One day they took it to a local shopping center parking lot and they were push starting it, it took off and when it stopped itn had moved a mailbox with concrete on the legs, moved 10 feet. When the Byers kids inspected the go cart, the frame did not even bend
When talking about adjusting the valves make sure you specify that your supposed to do it on TDC of the compression stroke, otherwise you might have some people trying it on the exhaust stroke lol.
The ghost was richer then all the others. Lean is mean. Can see the correlation of afr to hp. The hp will lag a lil in comparison to afr as afr changes then right after you’ll see in the hp. Idk neat to see although hard to see.
Cars and Cameras put one of these on a machine and Ike had mentioned the Ghost felt more out of balance than the other Predators and Tillotsons. What's your take on this? Also was wondering if the intake that was on it at the beginning was part of the accessory pack and if so, why wasn't it used? Really enjoying these dyno vids.....top quality stuff!
Who would want any of the Predator 212's? There's better options for not that much more money. Last I looked the Wildcat 223 was on sale for under $200. Ducar 212 is probably the best buy and comes with a PVL flywheel.
@@patarmstrong3582 That is a good point. The only way I would ever get a Hemi or non Hemi Predator 212 is if I already had the Predator specific parts like the billet rod and flywheel. And for the non Hemi, the Predator specific cam. They finally got smart with the Ghost and 224. They use clone parts. My 224 has a clone rod, flywheel, and cam.
Do you plan on doing a 224 in the series. Would be interested in those numbers. Definitely a noticeable power diffrence between my stage 1 212 and my stage 1 224..
same power just higher in the range, a cam swap is the major difference between an engine designed to run a small water pump and one designed to be in a kart. might not look allot faster on paper but there is most likely a massive difference in performance in a properly geared and clutched application
Thank you for doing these for us.Please forgive my comment in a previous episode test as seeming rude.It wasn't meant as such.I just hoped you'd grind the key so the timing was stock as anyone else would do without the cam upgrade yet.Would you please run that engine corrected before the next add-on parts? Thanks Greg.
Awesome. This is precisely what I wanted to know. I was thinking about getting the Predator but wanted to know what kind of numbers the Ghost made. Knowing that I can take the Predator beyond the Ghost for a similar cost and I get to wrench on an engine is a win win for me. Thanks a lot. Think I'll be ordering a Predator in the morning since they are on sale this weekend.
It's just a spec used to be safe. You know you are not too tight or too loose. You can use 2 or 5 thou if you want and it's not going to make a difference. 3 thou more or less valve lift is nothing. A detailed builder can carefully set these at zero.
Mine's choke will turn itself on then it will die, on the final stroke it will shoot air back out the intake which is very weird. Also I didnt do anything to break it in, I forgot to do that so I may have messed some stuff up but I have no idea.
Glad I'm not the only one that runs good oil in my small engines. Seems like everyone else just tosses whatever is sitting in their backyard in the engine. I'm over 300 hours on my stock 196cc hisun without a single hiccup
Ya this is made for series racing. That 6000 rpm electronic governor is a giant equalizer. Plus people are having the regular 212 “blue printed” with only governor removal, .031 jet, and true 10.8 springs and paying 500$ for it. So this motor would be great!
Could you please specifically point to graphs and say this is green and this is blue? I can’t tell the difference between those colors. That has caused me a couple of low speed car accidents.
Love the vid I've been looking for a better engine to put on this old streaker go kart frame I got sitting around the motor it originally had was a 6 & a half horsepower Briggs & Stratton so I want to put something on there that will wake it up a little bit plus I have 12 inch knobby tires and both back wheels turn it's not just a one-wheel cart so the six and a half horse power struggles a little bit to get it going but maybe the predator ghost will do a lot better so I'm definitely going to check it out thanks for the video
Put the big carb on the ghost make the same horsepower or more than yours, and when I smoke it take it back because, I still have a warranty, no brainer
Yes. In theory the Ghost with the same carb as his other engine should make better power because the Ghost comes with a 252 lift cam. Even if the HP number is close the Ghost would have better torque.
