I've started being better. I have been less lazy overall, and have implemented better time management tactics and realized were huge time sinks were being wasted in my life. It may not be big for a lot of people, but after several years, I deleted Facebook and twitter from my life, and it has been enough weeks now where I don't think about them, and instead have been using my time to read more. Seemingly simple achievements, but for some people, some mole hills are mountains. Thank you for the encouragement, Woodbeard, and in these strange times of 2019, you seem like an upstanding man who has a wonderful family you deserve. I am sincerely happy for you. I read or heard a quote the other day that I think applies. I admire you, and admiration is seeing others being successful and being genuinely happy for them because they are happy and successful. I interpreted it as the opposite of jealousy. I admire you. And someday, hopefully sooner than later, I hope to have a cabin in the woods where I can get out and do the things I have learned from your channel. My bad for the long winded response. Cheers!
It's the truth. I hate to see people suffer needlessly, but also believe that we need to work toward a better life and that we are all capable of doing so. Its hard to see other people succeed, but when we take part in their success, we also succeed right along side them. Life is about partnerships to me, let's bring everyone up together, there's no need to shove people down just to pretend to elevate ourselves. Let's all grow better together.
That_one_guy...fantastic comment brother! Very well done shoving the trash(fakebuuk, twit'r&that kinda crap) outta your mind & life...most, literally can't mentally survive without soc.media. What you did is HUGE in this world, and you should be proud of that accomplishment! Put the next goal in concrete & step by step knock'em out! Great job & God Bless you
If you're reading more i suggest audible. You can continue with your books while cooking, working etc. If i could reccomend some good ones, 1984 by george orwell, the origin of species by charles darwin, a clockwork orange by anthony burgess, platos republic by plato, crime and punishment by fyodor dostoevsky, the old man and the sea by ernest hemingway and the art of war by sun tsu. They may not interest some people but you definentally gain something from reading each of them.
I've read at least half of those. I am a reader, I just got lazy and stopped for a while. Right now I'm halfway through the Tibetan book of the dead. Platos' Republic is chunky. I'm just glad we read it in school with others' being able to talk about it. I haven't tried audible.com yet, ut I've heard good things. I would rather physically read than just listen to audio books, I feel like it gets in my brain better. @@FinkPloyd504
@@that__one__guy5405 tibetan book of the dead that sounds intriguing, ill have to check that out. If its about buddhism which it sounds like, the book of wisdom by osho might also interest you.
There are many reasons why I appreciate your channel, but one of the most important aspects is to see a great dad showing such a good example to his son. What a refreshing channel you offer folks. Thank you so much for all the experiences, wisdom, simplicity, authenticity and beneficial uploads you share. Sincerely.
I spent years doing nothing but wasting. Watching you has given me some motivation to get out and do stuff. I started a few gardens to eat off my land. You are a inspiration man.
Yes that sure is!!!! I have been camping in Whiteshell Provincial Park. At 05:00 hrs we heard someone banging on something metallic. After about half an hour , got pissed off and found out that it was a Woodpecker pounding on a garbage can lid. LMAO
I love the idea of building a tree house/ deer blind. I would definitely watch those episodes! Your brother Kevin seems very skilled in craftsmanship and carpentry. He should start his own channel!!!
Our little guy is such a trooper 😀 and he's helpful too. The experiences make for great memories and the knowledge he's gaining is priceless..it'll be passed on for generations to come. I so enjoy watching you guys ❤
My brother has some land about 5 hours from here. Other than hunting, we didn't visit it enough because of the distance. So, over the winter, I bought an old tractor, refurbished it and delivered it to the property a few weeks ago. Now I've got a good excuse to make the trip and decompress as there's always grass to mow and trees to cut.
*Lots going on here!!! Thanks to Eastonmade Wood Splitter: **www.eastonmadewoodsplitters.com/* *We are hard at work trying for beaver, turkey, crow, catching hatchery trout, digging a pond (probably) and getting ready for Maine (shhhh!). I don't know how much of this I can be successful at, but we're out here throwing darts, eventually something hits the mark!*
why move north when there is so much land through out Canada, I actually go south if Winnipeg when I go out to the wilderness or just a little bit north or any direction
I love to see you keeping traditions like syrup production alive, and passing it on to the next generation. Harvesting from nature in a sustainable manner in becoming a forgotten art all together. Inspirational as always man!
i live in south carolina...the way you guys are living is so intriguing...i have followed you for hours throughout your different projects....the cabin from the very beginning to finishing the walls inside...i feel like i know you and the family .... thanks for sharing your lives with us in the low country...Canada is beautiful.
After years of service and a war, recovering from injuries, I just keep pushing out to do more. Enjoy your videos and one day I'll have my own place. Won't be able to do all the physical tasks, but that isn't going to stop me. Long winded answer of what I've been doing? Being resilient and not letting my injuries hold me back from living.
You are an amazing family and a top shelf videos. I'm from the syrup country. I just finished cutting up 22 cords for our last syrup harvest. Hard work great outcomes. We have a 100 gallon tank.
Hey my dude. Canadian turning American and goal of having the ability to do what you’re doing in either country. As they both have SO much to offer. Your videos is one of the first I’m watching to do my research and although I know there are many ways of doing this, I truly enjoy watching how you do you. I can’t wait to see more progress!! Cheers!!
It's amazing what you do, I live in the city but use to love making forts with friends in the forrest. Your videos made me want to go back out to the woods and start doing what I used to again with more to it. I now go out on weekends whenever I have the time the spend some nights by a fire, I even tried eating some bark like you did, and I can say it wasn't the greatest. Wish I could see the cabin in person it looks amazing. Please don't stop making RU-vid videos! 😁
Wow that splitter is a beast! Cute kids. The ants will LOVE your porch now come summer. Sad about the syrup, but ya gave a bit back to the earth too. Hugs to ya all. Stay safe.
that is so cute never imagined drinking maple syrup right from a cup. went to canada for the first time last month and sadly didn't come back with some syrup! but the people are awesome (in north bay). in the city, didnt notice much from the people
My wife can't understand how I can spend hour after hour sitting in front of the computer and watch a couple of guys build a small cabin in the woods - I really enjoy DIY stuff and building any kind of project involving carpentry as the basics - I love building "things" requiring my nail gun, circ saw, table saw, etc. and this pandemic is driving me crazy as is the price of wood that I need for my projects. These videos are really enjoyable - maybe not a lot of the video selfies - and I'm still trying how to figure out the order of the videos. Awesome stuff!
I absolutely love the B-roll of kids sledding every time you have clips- it’s so fun to watch kids having a blast outdoors! I lucked out that my husband and my stepkids love the outdoors, and my closest friend and her daughter do too. Personally, I don’t feel myself if I can’t get out and spend time outdoors for a while. I daydream of camping and hiking almost daily. I’m lucky in some ways that where I live, I can drive to either the forest, pine scrub, Oceanside, Springs, creeks/rivers, various ecosystems all in less than or within an hour or so drive. (Look for the dead center of Florida on a map, I’ll be waving) I’m not a hunter, but I’m a good shot, my husband shoots competitively. We both rod&reel fish (fresh & salt), but enjoy spearfishing (salt) when the conditions are right. I asked for a folding saw for Christmas... but I’m also an artist, work in art/technology/filmmaking/education, a professional photographer, and general maker of things. I think some folks have just fallen into the convenience and ease of modern life to the point they feel out of place outdoors for any period of time. I get depressed if I can’t go into nature or see wildlife... like when parks and forests closed during lockdown... that sucked.
Underground forts.Me and a childhood friend built one that was quite expansive. Kept a complete secret. Twenty years later the property was being cleared for development and the loggers dropped a skidder in it and the local paper picked it up and tried to solve the mystery.I was up crabbing/fishing the Bering Sea and missed it all. Got home and the friend filled me in. It is still a secret. lol
Looks like a woodpecker doing some serious work on that tree. Must say good parenting! That kid learning stuff outdoors and doing an honorable work instead of playing videogames and fiddling with iPads. Something that is not that common today. Thumbs up from Sweden!
Fullstop each time every time! Hey WB good stuff! Soo you definitely need a sponsor so you can make more Maple syrup next year & sell it to help sponsor your adventures to various locales & improvements to the property. Just a thought on the access to the opposite back corner of the property. Use the chainsaw in conjunction with the portable splitter to cut a path/roadway back to a "staging area" from which it'll be easier to build the new lofted cabin. That way its less invasive to the wildlife. But I love the idea of a lofted hunting cabin. Would love to see more of you and Mark & Jer getting out hunting. Keep up all the awesome content!
Full stop :-) that was a long video Bud very enjoyable :-) I like the lake idea maybe some fruit or berry bushes and trees around the place for deer grassing ,,, ? Small Cabin in the trees with a blind balcony lol :-) wow 50 letters of syrup well done team and the splitter wow what a machine nice score. Lots of action great Saturday morning video enjoy your day team Woodbeard :-)
70 years ago I used to read the sap buckets out in front of the house I loved it then what was left my mom would take into the house and make maple syrup to this day I still love it nothing better than some maple syrup on a waffle cooked on a Griswold waffle maker
If the Eastonmade guy wants to bring a splitter down under, I’ve got 12 acres of natural Australian bush on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and we need to clear a bunch of it for the Roo’s to have areas to rest & graze
Been waiting for the another video for AGES, youtube was boring without you man, I got so bored i rewatched everything, really liked the episode that was 2 hour long
You must hear MY tale of woe ! A friend and I spent one cold winter cleaning and carefully opening BLACK WALNUTS using a rubber mallet and little nippers / diagonal pliers. After a few months we split about THREE GALLONS of clean nutmeat. Old jars would have sufficed but I kept mine in a few gallon plastic freezer bag in the refrigerator. about two months later I went to use some in a Banana Bread and the nutmeat was moldy and I had to throw it all out. Broke my heart
Shout out from eastern Ontario. My wife and I started watching your videos starting with the cabin build. Extremely interesting content and find the viewing addictive. Both my wife and I are city dwellers but love the outdoors. We are both hoping you take on the treehouse project, as it is something we thought we would love to retire to....a treehouse :)
Hi from the land down under. You've certainly inspired me to a big change of life with your videos. Friends recently bought 80 acres an hour inland from Taree in NSW, Australia.I've spent a few weeks up there helping them finish off a small cabin that was there when they bought the property. I'm now working on clearing out my house of some of the stuff I've hoarded over the last 15 years, buying a small caravan to live in while I clear a few acres for myself to build a small cabin, and then I'll be selling my house in suburbia to go live off grid in the woods. Can hardly wait. Cheers.
I grew up in the woods I love being connected to nature. Now that I live in the city I miss it sooo much so any opportunity I get I go out in the woods. Wish i lived in Canada cause I would come join you guys in the beautiful outdoors. 💗💚🙂🌲🌲
Yeah Come on Kevin let's build a tree house!!! I absolutely love tree houses!!! They are my second favorite next to the cabin... My dream is moving up north someday and building a cabin... Absolutely love your guys cabin!!! It's 10-8!!!!!!! Keep up the building it's so enjoyable watching when ya can't build one for yourself at the moment... Lol love everything you guys do!!! And that wood splitter is completely AWESOME!!! Love you guys!!!
It's so relaxing watching these videos, keep em coming! I'm trying to get out more, born and raised on the countryside of the middle of Sweden turned city boy (not by choice). I go up to the family cabin in the mountain range at the border of Norway and just turn almost all electronics off and chill for a week. Paddle out to a island near my childhood home. Just got a cat to keep me company as well. That's the changes I'm making to feel better, and these videos are helping with inspiration and entertainment!
I haven’t really made any big changes..... but I picked up the courage to start skateboarding in my old age despite the funny looks I get from the young ones! It’s so fun I’m loving the adrenaline
Hey woody, if you cook with just a couple of inches of sap In the pan and the have a drip method of sap entering the pan, you will have better efficiency of your wood. If you fill the pan, you loose a lot of heat in the side of the pan. I set metal cans next to the firebox and it heated the sap before it goes in the evaporator. Yah woody you make dirt look like gold.
Those cherry branches surrounded by rabbit droppings gave me inspiration for a new concept in buffet restaurants. The key to their profitability is keeping customers at the tables eating.
dont worry about that liter got to GIVE SOMETHING TO THE HOMIES . would love to buy some of that syrup . seriously would buy some of that syrup. pay you and pay the shipping. love you guys from chattanooga TN .
Great video on finishing your maple syrup. Beautiful commercial splitter! ( wish I could see video on finishing up electric being completed for the camp!))))
great machine my buddy near Ottawa got one all you need is a conveyor to stack the wood . I believe they sell that too . Like your videos great showing.
Because maple syrup is a low acid food it would have to be pressure canned. which isn’t hard to do it just requires a pressure canner and it takes more time. Yesterday I watched a video of yours about foraging and preserving the wild leeks aka ramps. When you’re water bath canning you need to use a pot deep enough so that you have 1-2 inches of water above the top of the jars so that they are submerged.
Love your channel. Such a real and direct connection to your audience. Keep up the great work. Ever given any thoughts to digging a small diameter water well and just a simple hand pump so get some semblance of running water. A simple French drain / leach pit of gravel for a drain might be useful.
I'm an Aussie! Iron bark is some hard wood but that's not the hardest out here. The wood splitter looks mean and will chop anything by the looks of it ! I don't think it'll have a problem with any of the wood down here! Also the maple syrup looks amazing !!!! I'd love to get my hands on some!!
Hey WB, I took up shooting the English longbow six weeks ago. Time stopped for the two hours I shot. Beautiful. Good new friends, fresh air and exercise. Thanks.
Started watching Cabin in the Woods ! Different activities weekly! Could check other herbs out enhance goose and meat recipes. Root veggies and mushrooms grow in the wild most places. Puffball mushrooms are fabulous eating with garlic butter fried pan style. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve decided to take my health more serious. I’ve quit smoking after of 11 years, two packs a day. I’ve also changed my diet and started becoming more active. In 2018, I lost 100 pounds and I’m hoping to lose another 65 this year. You’re a inspiration, brother! Keep up the great work!!
I was thinking about your pecker problem and realized that the pecker probably found a nest of cicada eggs and cocoons in that tree and that's why the holes are so large! It's a good thing in my opinion that the pecker eats the cicada's they are a plague! Just my opinion though!
I have a list I call my "To Eliminate" list. I list out problems (like "bed isn't comfortable" or "not enough storage"), then underneath each problem I brain storm a list of mitigation tasks. When all of the tasks are complete, I consider the problem solved. I have a monthly "Elimination Day" where my only chore of the day is to check at least one thing off the list, although I usually check off a few at a time.
Thank you for the inspiring videos. At 53 I am taking up hunting. Got my hunter ed and pal course next weekend. Working on my tribe of like minded folks.
throw a camera on that cedar I bet you get some great footage of a pileated woodpecker; sweet syrup; love the woodsplitter; I could use one; great video
An experiment you may want to do is melt just your ice and see what you get. I’ve been told by many syrup boilers that any ice you pick out of your sap is like free runtime in the boiler. Supposedly sap doesn’t freeze only water. Letting your sap freeze and picking out the ice is equivalent to boiling it partially down.
Everyone's expression about the broken container of syrup was priceless. Looked like you had lost a jar of liquid gold. Woody woodpecker going after that tree? Just had my birthday last week like Jer. You living wilderness challenges have helped me as I have been loosing weight with intermittent fasting. People have been saying they see the difference and that has been a big motivator. You can get a tractor down there. Just put a blade on the front end and scrape the mud down till you get to good dirt.
I take it your syrup oven worked out? Changes in life....i plan to retire in 2 1/2 years. I will be 56. Worked over 40 years in a demanding job. Relationship with kids and wife suffered. Now, more time for them and of course hunting and fishing. Keep up the great work!
You beat me to it! That is one tough woodpecker and rare enough to work a blind to watch and film. Growing up I watched a mated pair reduce 2 100' ft. Cedars to a mushy stump over a decade. It was amazing how much damage a Cedar tree can take still be standing.
Underground bases. Ah.. I remember that as a young teen. I had spent weeks digging a hole around 5 feet wide and 3 feet deep. Got it all nice and put a roof on it with dead fall and fur boughs. The next week we had a storm. When it was over and I went back to check on the base, the roof was still there so I was stoked.. ... However, we have clay soil... I no longer had a den, I had a pond.
Seems like you should add to your Merch sales by adding your home made goods to your list of items. Add your syrup ,your fruit leather, beaver stew (maybe add some rice or pasta to stretch it out) , fresh berry syrups also to go over pancakes.
Man you brought back some memories talking about digging to China. I managed a 4 foot ramped hole in our backyard over a weekend using a Tonka Toy road scraper. My dad had been on a business trip and was not appreciative of the effort that took.
Trying to stay positive. I'm 63 right now, but turning 64 in a few days. I have 3 hens that help me get out of the house. Also 2 dogs. At the Moment I live in a trailer park. I want to live in the country some day.
Holy Moley your trees are productive! That is an impressive amount of syrup for a home operation. Do you sell it at a farmers market? That would bring $20 a litre in the US.
You can talk Kevin into stuff eh. I bet you got him into some stuff when you were a kid ;) Cool that your getting other people and the kids out guys . I like the outhouse idea too. Like the slitter great stuff. But this is a question couldn't you sell milled wood for more. Or combination of both. Amazing amount of sap syrup. my kids are always covered in mud ;-) They use the splitter in the middle east for punishment.. The director lol
loving the video mate. that is a lot of maple syrup lol. writing this comment as the adverts play :) what have I done to better myself. lose a lot of weight and got rid of toxic and negative people. if anyone new to the channel, this is the place you will actually learn something stick around this guy is amazing and he actually says hi. love and light to you and yours mate and may your channel grow love it. keep it coming I always watch your videos and let the adverts play.
I think one of the dest decisions my gf and I made was about 3 years ago when we joined a black powder gun clud. Every long weekend there is a shoot somewhere. We travel to different clubs for the weekend camp in primitive styles, cook as they did back in the day, dress in old style clothing and shoot our black powder guns. It's all friendly competition. Most of all it gives us something to look forward to.
Hey, guys. nice channel, first time here.. i don't know if you've tried using a wider and lower pot to boil the pail. With the broader pot you have larger surface area, easing water molecules to vaporize, thus reducing boil time and wood usage thats how its made melaço, the sugar cane syrup, and rapadura, the cristalized sugar in form of a block, and very dark. cheers, nice jop you been doing
