We have been waiting for two years to bring you this video, and the day has finally come! We decided to add a pond to our backyard food forest, initially because we wanted the scummy pond water to feed our fruit trees. During that two years, however, we learned how important it is to have as much diversity in the yard as possible, and nothing attracts birds and insects more than a source of water! Water is life, and in the 24 hours since we've filled our pond up, we've noticed all kinds of bugs, insects, birds, and even toads enjoying this space!
Our pond is about 15 feet by 15 feet, shaped like a heart (a happy mistake!), and about 3 and a half feet deep. We added a BioFalls cascade and a skimmer to filter the water and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria, and lined the walls of the pond with rocks for even more surface area for that bacteria. We do plan to add fish (like gambusia, or mosquito fish, and koi) and plants to complete the little ecosystem, but we want to let our pond run for a few days before adding any new life to it.
We still have a little work left before this pond is 100% complete, but we just had to share an update video showing you guys how it looks and sounds now that it is full of water! We also want to thank everyone who came over and helped us move boulders and the liner, and want to give a huge shout out to The Pond Digger for his incredibly detailed tutorial videos on RU-vid!
