In a strange way, I'm sort of happy for him to not be part of what football has become. Don't get me wrong, I love the game and I'm a ST holder at my club, but he played and managed through, what was prob the last bit of top level English football being something for the masses.... Newcastle United “should” have won the Premier League in 95/96. No question about it, the players let Kevin down when they went on a horrendous run of 8 games after being 12 points clear. The football they dished up that season was exciting, attacking and full of flair. Great player and manager, he’s the type of guy who any fan would love to have as their manager. Kevin’s the reason why I became a Liverpool fan in 1971 (50 years ago, wow I can’t believe it, where has the time gone?). Bill Shankly had just signed him and Liverpool were getting ready for the 1971 FA Cup Final against Arsenal, which they lost 1-2, and Kevin wasn’t selected. One of the most respected men in football, love you Kevin, keep well and stay in good health, Rob.

@@allthekingshorses7178 I looked back at the season review the other day just to refresh my memory. For the sake of a few minutes and a couple of smacked crossbars, it could've happened. Above all, I can't imagine a team playing the way we did and even coming close. Entertaining but if I had a centre-back like Albert or Watson charging up every chance they got, I'd be having heart attacks.

The thing I remember most about the era with Newcastle was this old man who was a supporter of them and the camera would often pick him out in the crowd, he was in his 80's and you could see how much passion he still had for the team and seeing them win the title probably would have sent him to his grave a happy man and sadly it didn't happen.I can't find videos of the man anywhere but he definitely was picked out by the cameras in a number of matches.

Of course it was mind games and it worked because it made Keegan and Newcastle over think thing. The same thing happened when Rafa went on his fact rant although that was aimed at trying to make others give decisions in their favour and it worked in the wrong way as it put more pressure on the team. Things like that are amazing to see happen because regardless of you believe in it sometimes all you have to do is get in the head of one player on the pitch and that negativity spreads.

I’m a Newcastle supporter so biased, but imo it’s exactly like the interviewer says, I watch that interview and I feel as Keegan feels in it, I’m pissed off with him. I get fired up just typing about it. Hindsight is 20/20 and people say “mInD GaMeS” now, but if NUFC had won the title people wouldn’t be talking about how Ferguson is a genius for this. There’s nothing wrong with getting fired up for a cause and for your pride. People tend to laugh at anyone who goes on a ‘rant,’ but really those who laugh just don’t care the way that the ranter does. Read the ‘man in the arena’ excerpt from a Roosevelt speech, then tell me Kev is a clown for this.

What a legend and a decent bloke. When he was manager of Newcastle builders did work on his house. He used to bring them cups of tea and trays of sandwiches and crack on with them about football. He needs a statue build up of him outside of ST James park or a stand named after him at least when the stadium gets expanded. Although we didn’t win anything the legacy he left behind with his attacking football, big name signings and rant and passion is worth more up in the north east then everything. Manchester City has won.

You don't seem to understand what "throwing a game" is then. Its not a player scoring but being privately conflicted about the effect of a goal. Look at Graham Fenton, the Geordie whose brace for Blackburn all but ended Newcastle's dreams. Fergie implied these guys wouldn't try not that they didn't have emotions. He directly indicated that Stuart Pearce of all people wouldn't give 100% because he'd make more money having Newcastle play his testimonial as champions. This is what Fergie will never understand. People didn't love that Newcastle team because of the reason that glory hunters supported Man U. They loved them for their spirit and the fact they represented everything positive about the sport.

Well, you can have “if onlys in football”. So, if only Newcastle had not sold Andy Cole, still the club’s record goalscorer in a single season in the Prem - and unlike Shearer he never took penalties - Man United might never have won the Treble or some of their titles. And who knows, Newcastle might even have pipped them in one of those seasons. Sorry Kev, but selling Andy Cole to Man Utd, a powerful and direct rival - still ranks for me as one of the worst decisions ever made by a Newcastle manager.

I wish that was true and teams DID lay down and let us beat them. But the simple truth is, they don't. Next question.' He could have seethed in private about it, but not in public. Keegan was my hero in football. I was a 10 year old on the Kop when he made his debut against Forest and he scored a goal in that game. His partnership with John Toshack was legendary.

@@kevinstones9326 Ah, okay. Hotel worker. All innocent then. I met Alan Shearer once at Heathrow airport. I spoke to him and asked him questions as we walked along for at least five minutes. I could count the words he said to me on the fingers of one hand. Very monosyllabic. He just gave small smiles when I asked him about Ruud Gullit. Definitely no comment. That was back in 1999, on the day Bobby Robson managed his first game for them, a 0-0 draw at Arsenal.
