We Left A Skip on the Street to see What People Dumped... AND Took!

With our property conversion in West London complete we only had a few bits of waste to dispose of so thought it was a good opportunity to hire one of our own 8 yard skips and let the locals use it too. At Ashville we're passionate about waste management and the environment. Never let a good skip go to waste! A Social Waste Experiment
As this was so soon after lockdown had been lifted in London we were expecting the skip to be filled in a few days... What a load of rubbish! :)

This is a clear proof that IT’S ALL ABOUT COMMUNICATION. Aka you can’t expect people to read your mind. If you want somebody to call you, tell them. If you want somebody to be with you, invite them for a coffee. If you want somebody to fill your skip, POST A SIGN! People don’t have a crystal ball. Be open, be kind, keep filling each other’s skips! 😉🌷

In Australia they do this twice a year. You register online so they know what you might be leaving and then they collect it on the allocated day. You don't pay for it although I'm sure it's covered by tax payers anyway. Super handy :) also we get extra bin days at Christmas time.

the policymakers should see this and use it to help with fly-tipping, common sense if this is placed strategically around deprived areas where it's extremely difficult for people to dispose of waste this will keep the neighbourhood clean.

I've always wondered why local councils don't provide skips routinely. After a month of doing this on a housing estate, for example, most of it would be done. People hoard all kinds of junk until they can either afford to get rid of it or dump it somewhere, but doing this maybe three times a year could potentially save millions spent on cleaning up fly tipping.

In my area in the US we have bulky trash pick up 4 times a year. It rotates around the city. When it is your area's turn the stuff can be set out up to a week prior. People will leave signs like "works!" on the good stuff or write things like "don't take! cat pee!" or "broken" on stuff to warn people to leave it for the landfill. Most things in good shape are picked up quickly by neighbors or people cruising the neighborhood which reduces the amount going to the landfill. My own dresser and nightstand were bulky trash week finds from neighbors.

When I lived in Milton Keynes, the council would set a skip on some grass on the estates and would normally leave it for a month and often weekly tidy ups or new skips, not sure if they still do this, but I feel a lot of the reasons many councils won't do this now is because of comercial companys or Bob the builders dumping waste. Spot on with what you said about these firms getting paid to do a job and should act responsible.
@TheByard

The reason a lot of small builder fly tip is because official tips are so expensive. The councils then loose on tip fees and have to clear up the mess.

If the builder is willing to flytip, just imagine the shortcuts they are willing to take in the house. I rented a flat where they hired a lazy builder to do the kitchen and he couldn't be bothered to install a socket for the washing machine. So he just spurred off the 30A cooker socket to the washing machine. When I took out the spurred wire from the pattress box I saw that the earth wire wasn't crimped in properly and the crimp were on the insulated sheath of the earth wire. So we had a 30A power to a washing machine with no EARTH. I don't blame it all on these builders though. I blame the landlords who hire them. What do you expect when you take the cheapest quote? I blame the

Had a skip hired a couple years back when me and my dad refurbed my drive, I live on a dead end on a residential street, I had NO IDEA that we could have received a fine for keeping it in the street. I feel like the company whom we hired the skip from should have the knowledge that you have and should have made us aware of permits etc. Also we had a public skip placed on my street during beginning of lockdown so elderly residents could dispose of waste without having to make the journey to the tip...I think the government should think about subsidising public skips, surely it costs less to have a skip every 3 or 4 streets that gets emptied regularly than it is to keep cleaning up all the fly tipping that we see in my area. I've seen articles with estimates in the £10s of thousands for the clear-up of fly tipping waste...idk just a thought

While people using skips that they haven't paid for pisses me off, it would still make sense for council to leave a public skip out to stop fly tipping. would end up spending a few hundred quid instead of thousands.
@Tammc09
@Tammc09 3 года назад
That sounds good until you think of the possible ways it could go tits up. This was 1 skip that only passers by knew about and it was filled past capacity within a week. Professionals are actually responsible for the majority of fly tipping so imagine if they knew that there were free skips at X, Y and Z they could dump all their shit in legally and for free. Even if it were only for public use how do they stop professionals from using it? Pay someone to watch it? Or not and just eat the cost of subsidising the massive construction industry? You could easily see the costs racking up because like everything, the concept always sounds better than the practical reality.
@liamholcroft7212
@liamholcroft7212 3 года назад
@@Tammc09 it doesn't have to be exactly like this, my point is it costs thousands to clear up fly tipping which could be negated with the use of something like this.
@Tammc09
@Tammc09 3 года назад
@@liamholcroft7212 Yeah and my point is that it wouldn't be negated at all because you aren't accounting for the practical costs involved in councils implementing things.
@liamholcroft7212
@liamholcroft7212 3 года назад
@@Tammc09 Well in that case let's just leave it all alone let people fly tip and then clean it up afterwards, or solve the problem at it's cause and impliment something like free skips. Also don't take my origional comment as a "plan" of sorts, i was merely speculating the differences in proper waste disposal compared to environmental cleanup.

You can't give people anything without them taking liberties. How could they lump that bath on a skip that is clearly over full and then slide a dirty mattress on the road.
