This video attempts to make the best CPU cooler coldplate for Intel LGA1700 (such as 14th Gen) and the best CPU cooler for AMD AM4 and AMD AM5. We're focusing our efforts entirely on coldplate shape today to isolate variables -- maybe we can bin heatpipes in the future. This uses a 3D laser scanner to evaluate the surface curvature of an Intel and AMD IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) when clamped under the ILM (Independent Loading Mechanism) force for the CPU socket. It's an engineering experiment for fun with some science mixed in, but maybe this can help guide CPU cooler design in the future. For this testing, we're using the Scythe FUMA 3 air coolers (successor to the famous FUMA 2). We were originally inspired to do this at Computex last year, where we met with Scythe to discuss the possibilities of a better coldplate. I still wonder why those heatpipes aren't connected on the begin and end point. Effectively creating a loop. Seems to me that this has never been tried before. This could benefit cooling since the liquid flows naturally as a loop without a pump.

People are saying that Scythe is really cool for doing this, but I'm just here thinking that if i were them, I'd be stoked if a third party were to rigorously test and validate the products I was designing. I feel like this is a huge opportunity for them as well as GN to improve this industry and technology. Super cool work!

I think a big shout out needs to go to Scythe for being on board with this. They could have simply been like we know what we are doing and stuck their head in the sand but they was willing to make the coolers and be open to see if there are better ways so credit to them.

Scythe, to me, has been absolutely amazing as a company. Right up there with noctua with post-warrenty support: sent me not one but two compatibility brackets for my mugen 2 cooler to allow it to be used for motherboards the original bracket didnt support. For free. Performance for the price combined with aftermarket support like this is absolutely unheard of in my opinion. Have a couple gentle typhoons that have been putting in work for well over a decade now, should be about 12 years, migrated from build to build and they still work quietly and seem to perform as well as the day I got them. If scythe has a product that is anywhere near the performance of a competitor at a somewhat comparable price level its a no brainer to me. Obviously N=1 but hey I feel like they deserve some public loving after this video.

The contact frame: some of your points seems like they actually prove that as being a better solution. For example it makes the cpu common rather than trying to adapt to many cpus. This helped me make more sense out of that.

Interestingly it also seemed to show that even with a contact frame a perfectly flat cooler still wouldn't be the way to go. Given the number of man hours people put into lapping their CPU's and cold plates I find that a rather surprising result. I wonder whether it changes significance with different pastes/thermal sheets ?

Paul was still on bass, and Danny was tall af... towering over everybody, even the bouncers. And Maynard still had hair. You could lap the "Golden Sample" to get it flat and retest to confirm it's not just this specific cooler is better. Like you mentioned there is some manufacturing variance with heatpipe performance or with how heatpipes are contacting the fins.

@@GamersNexus Nickle plating would not be difficult. You just have a nickle solution to electroplate it yourself with a car battery, and some fishing string can be wrapped around the pipes to prop it up, but you might end up accidentally bending the fins. Using the mounting hardware that comes with the cooler for propping it up might work better. Just lower the cooler enough to cover what's exposed and electrify.

​​@@bluephreakr I have done nickel plating with a self cooked solution. If I was GN I'd probably order a solution rather than play around. Also it doesn't come out the same since self made solution lacks brightening. I have added saccharine to mine to try to achieve brightening but I don't thing it has done much. My first mistake when making the solution was to use a little too much salt. Second was to use vinegar, I found citric acid much less obnoxious. What I'll say though is that for the area the car battery is guaranteed too much voltage. Just use any lab PSU and trim it until it no longer bubbles, or use a recommended current density formula. Electrode placement night be a bit of an issue, you want it below the cold plate if you're lowering the cooler down. But it also needs to evacuate gas so I don't know. Curiously I have done cooler lapping as well, and the one I lapped was a Scythe, but I haven't nickel plated it again.

Okay this is really cool. An almost 3° difference just from having a slightly different shaped coldplate is ACRUALLY measurable. I was thinking maybe .1 or .2 of a degree, but whole numbers change? That's incredible.

@@kickazzdrummer666 LTT was never designed go that in depth for such products, its more of entertaining content while still share enough technical knowledge. i myself i have to say its way easier to watch LTT than GN videos. GN is great to have an in depth look but in reality prob "making mountain out of a molehill". yet still doing mistakes too. (*cough Arctic LF3 pump noise problem - which wasnt a problem (or better: it didnt had one) according to GN but 80% of the ppl that bought it said otherwise) - i like Steve & his in depth engineering videos but sometimes its kinda unnecessary, nobody of the consumer gonna make use of (obv just my opinion)

@@Vss077 Thing is though, that this is not only about consumers. Making consumers aware and shedding light on the technical challenges manufacturers face improves the industry overall. People (and by extension companies) learn from each other and this kind of knowledge and insight wont go unnoticed by cooler manufacturers. A third party testing in this depth what you are designing and making, is the greatest gift to any manufacturer seeking to improve their technology.

@@marijnvandongen4835 this might be true and I agree to shine some light about the difficulties however the customer usually doesn't care how complex even simple things like CPU coolers are. we know how manufacturers think and they still rather do their own testing, since mostly all of them have their own equipment. and on top of it they won't listen, watch or take advice from a RU-vidr. (it's not all companies but 90% of them). they only take some sort of advice or agree their own mistakes when they are actually wrong months later.

If it in any way shape or form interacts in one of a few specific ways with the kernel of the software package it may skew results so needs to be certified and thoroughly tested. Same issue with SolidEdge not being multithreaded in any meaningful way (of course some parts can only use 1 process) apart from a few specific parts of the program (and SoldiWorks and Catia etc).

My first thought when I saw that UX was "Oh God, Why?" At least use Alt or Ctrl instead of check boxes. Then again, I know nothing about software development, so I have no idea how hard or easy it would be to make a better UX. Most likely, the manufacturer couldn't justify creating a new position just for UX development, so they did the best they could with what they had.

Seconded, although it takes fucking forever. Plus, reputable journals tend to have their own specific formatting, peer review, etc. I think GN could split the difference by putting these sorts of vids up on their website with the results and discussions, but that way they wouldn't have to worry about the bureaucracy of actually submitting to a journal.

Ah, the classic tale of Tech David vs. Goliath! Linus might be throwing cash like he’s trying to fix a paper jam with dollar bills, but GN is out here turning pocket lint into processors. At this rate, GN will be giving us flying cars while LMG will still be figuring out how to make a PC that doesn’t need a power button. 😄

This is honestly very cool, wouldn't have expected a 2+°C degree difference just from this. It kind of means that it could be worthwhile for some enthusiasts to lap their coolers to get an ideal curve, not sure how difficult that would be (honestly it does sounds more difficult than lapping a cpu)but it could be worthwhile

I love the fact you mention that you needed to use the scientific method for this. I just wish people would try using the same method for comparing picture quality for all these upscaling software out there right now along with the different AA techniques.

Right. So you're saying we need a kit containing a plain "dummy" socket soldered onto a PCB and a piece of sandpaper. Clamp the CPU in the dummy socket, sand it, transfer over to a real motherboard. Sanding the cooler contact plate is more difficult though...

Great content, keep it coming, you guys are killing it! My only beef is that I think the charts would be more readable and comparable if you did not re-sort the coolers by lowest temp each time. Please keep them in the same spot/order for each chart.

It seems like an easier way of making a CPU and cooler mate perfectly together would be to perform lapping between the CPU and cooler themselves. Clamp them in and grind them against each other with an abrasive until they have perfect contact.

Trade shows can be good as well. If you can get in for free through your university or college, maybe ask a professor or their assistant. If you're lucky to catch any actual engineers, they'll be super happy to spill the beans and have someone listen.

It would be interesting to see a test where both are lapped prior to install, then after install the chip clamp is released (to remove the bend induced by it) just leaving the cooler clamping the CPU in. The interesting results would be 1) Can get a more even distribution of contact or would the cooler mount cause distortion of one side only 2) Would this make up for the loss of extra pressure over the die on the curved plate. The reason this could be interesting is that the home modders could do this themselves by lapping on glass, but trying to create a curved plate to match the CPU is a lot more difficult for the DIY guys

Big corp is aware of all this. It's about the profit margin and continuous scheduled growth to capture growing market shares (yes this part is partially made up since it could be a brand new product with 0 shares in the market). Please also learn what it cost to do such projects and how long it too for such machine to be made. How many years of research and developement was needed to get to where we are today? The only sign I see here is you need more education on things work in this world. More questions needs to be asked. Strongly advise you to reword statements into questions to help along that journey. Why are youtubers making better thermal solutions than the major companies? How much pressure is applied? How much pressuer should be applied? Are there better material to use? What are the cost of production? What is the cost of sourcing materials? How much does the Machine to make AIO cost? What is the maintance schedule? What if this broke, how can it be fixed? Can it be fixed? So with that Gamer Nexus asks all these questions and DEMANDS a true answer and not from a PR staff from a Corporation to tell him some BS. Why? Back to corporations are just for profit and doesn't matter how. Then you also have to remember if the company is traded on the stock market, their only loyalty is to share holders, so back to profits.

I truly appreciate your scientific process. I saw a video back in the day where you were testing videocard power distribution and ac noise/ripple and you had some very special equipment to measure it. I know how special because I've used them before and they're not cheap. Keep it up :)

Best way to get a flat surface in something that will experience mounting forces, is to lap the surface while mounted. In this case you could socket a cpu in a dummy socket and then lap. When unmounted the cpu will bend back, but it should repeatably go back to flat when mounted. It’s something that I deal with daily as a manufacturer. You have to hold material tight to cut it, but holding something tends to distort that thing and will un distort back once released.

This was awesome! I've wondered about socket-specific coolers like this. This is a really fascinating exploration and explanation of it. Andrew is killing it with the animations. They are really great looking! You should make another poster. I'd buy it. I already have the exploded GN logo and the (retired) X570 metro map. But my walls need more PC-themed decoration. 💚

One thing I would love to see tested is a lapped cpu and lapped cooler. I would love to see if that is a worthwhile because that is actually something that most amateurs can easily do. I think testing it would be pretty hard but very interesting to see.

Being in my last years of mechanical engineering, - heat transfer being part of it. The detail in these series of videos but more specifically this one today made me immediately think '' this is so much thesis/journal grade'' yet presented very nicely and for everyone to understand on youtube :). Kudos to all of the team, also to Scythe for being in it. I think having a company like Scythe on board speaks volumes of your work.

I just recall my first PC build back in 2000's (still am2) I used a sandpaper to smooth the surface of the plate contact. Back then, not sure if today, but the plates were machine finished so they were not that smooth. I think I may have improved one or another degree... this is a really great work proving how contact is important.

You guys have really stepped up to a new level. Amazing stuff. Also, while for manufacturers, keeping most of their production to a single standard makes sense, I'm also convinced there's something to be done on the very high end market, because as you said, 2°C is quite significant for a cooler. I can totally see the guys with custom liquid cooling loops and heavy overclockers paying the premium for a CPU specific plate. Maybe that's a niche for a smaller company though.

I never knew about the cpu bend in general installation and how it effects the contact with the cooler. Super cool video and learned something interesting. I hope Sythe does some cool stuff with this info. People count out air coolers because of AIO's and liquid cooling in general but air coolers always seem to come back with a new trick to stay near the top in performance!
