For the steering, the rudder really needs to be at one end of the boat, whether front or rear, cos in the middle it's got to overcome a lot of forces to turn the craft, resulting in it barely turning at all... :)
An aft mounted rudder is usually the best way to go. Better turning radius, it won't lift out of the water and ideally you'd place it behind the propeller to increase its effectiveness. A bow rudder is certainly better than the center though if that's your best option.
The rudder has to be directly behind the propeller to direct the thrust from the prop.. or you have to make the prop turnable like on a outbound engine.
@@hill_customs6807 Well it doesn't HAVE to be, only powerboats can even take advantage of it but it's certainly much more effective with the prop wash flowing into it. Having it in the aft of the boat is key though.
For people in Europe wanting to build something similar: these Grey pipes are likely made from Polypropylene which is a nightmare to glue. The orange ones are from PVC, more resistant to impact and weather, and likely are cheaper and can be glued better.
starter motors were only made for 30 seconds to a minute of cranking not continuous duty a regular boat trolling motor would be a lot nicer it would steer and stay cool submerged in water maybe you could put a higher pitch propeller on one for more speed with that lightweight boat.
There are two stroke bike engine kits available online. You can buy one of those and fit it here. It is light and the engine has a clutch so I think it can make some nice propulsion. As for the steering, it's an easy fix. Just fit the rudder behind the propeller
You are correct, the pressure inside a rigid vessel will be the same buoyancy, compressed or not. It is the displaced water volume (the physical measurements of the vessel) that determines it's buoyancy, not how much air is inside of it. However, positive pressure in the vessel will have an unrelated benefit of assisting in preventing water ingress. For diving, the rules are slightly different but for different reasons. Tanks will be more buoyant as they deplete because they weight less and less as they are used up
I think it was pretty safe to be out there without life belts, so long as nobody went out without the sufficient ability to swim their way back to land. That lake didn't look too bad so long as the person out there can swim and there are other people nearby to help if something goes wrong. For me personally it wouldn't be a problem to swim completely across that lake. I'm a strong swimmer though, and could take my time doing it without any strong currents. I was pretty much born with the ability to swim, and can cross rivers with 5 to 7km/h current without getting washed downstream. Not everyone can swim like that though, and some can't swim at all. Life preservers are necessary for those people. A lake with clam water though is pretty safe for those who can swim well. Thank you for the awesome experiment. 2:13 Actually its exactly the opposed. If you remove air you increase the buoyance since the air will become less dense. This is of course considering that the tubes would keep their shape and not deform/shrink/colapse under a vacuum.
Great idea guys! I would try to use a 2 stroke blower or string trimmer engine. You might have to go with a slightly smaller prop because of lack of power??? I’ll stay tuned.
Whipper snipper, brush cutter what ever you call them in Russia. Can use a angle grinder battery operated aswell.... need a cross frame mid section. And a sheet of plastic at the front wouldn't hurt either.
Id put a inner wall inside pipes in the tip of the back and fill with water to have some weight back there. Or a marine battery on each side way in the back. Maybe a small solar panel on each battery to so it drains slower.
I think the point here would be to make it easy, light and cheap to get to a pond or lake. I'd keep it basically the same, except propel it with a petrol weed wacker or leaf blower. make a fastener that can swivel, so you won't need a rudder.
The stearing should stay on the front part or place the rotor closer to the seat and the stearing farther apart for the rotor that should make stearing very eficient. For the bending some reinforce to the structure and it should work fine.
This was fun no doubt ,maybe a frame or stiffener of some kind would help keep it from sagging in middle. a little more power would b nice, the starter motor i dont think is good for continuous use. more battery power so you dont run out of energy anyway good job guys.
Greatest buoyancy would be if you had a vacuum inside the pipes. The less dense the contents the greater the buoyancy. Filling them with additional air will slightly reduce the buoyancy.
Starter motors don’t have any cooling. They’re meant to be operated for a few seconds, maybe 10 at the most, then allowed to cool for several minutes. Running them for several minutes is a guaranteed way to let the smoke out. Might have been better off trying to seal it up and submerge it in the water. It wouldn’t last long term, but it would have worked longer for this recording session.
Displacement/Mass. You're actually sinking the boat by increasing the mass of the air inside the pipes. If the pipes got larger (more displacement) for the increased mass of air it would make sense to pump them up but this is not a rubber dingy or an air mattress. Good job introducing multiple potential leak points into the vessel though 😆

Use the blower motor for the heater, or use the motor for a mobility scooter. Both are reversible. Move the prop to just behind the seat, move the rudder to the back, and make it wider, so it will work better.
The only way to increase buoyancy is to increase the amount of water that the craft will displace. Unless the air is stretching the tubes and making the tubes bigger it won't make a difference.
Most people don't truly understand just how massive that country is. There's a lot of cold, untouched land but there's some very beautiful places up there.
I actually prefer that you tried something new with an electric motor. Please use a better motor and battery. You guys are onto something here. Add some floorboards too.
Welcome. Is it possible to try installing the transmission upside down with the car's engine? What is the speed of the tires? Please like for this application. 
Actually all the air in those tubes will only degreace the floating. Because air has a density and mass. All the mass is making only negative effect. Ofcourse only if the pipe will keep it's shape. Well, if you coud get a vacuum on those tubes, it would make boeat float more. But all that air will only do negative effects.
I had an idea what if you try to turn an old lada into a pontoon boat with its engine powering it. maybe you could run it through the gearbox down the driveshaft to a propeller instead of a rear axle then you would have a boat with gears😂👌
And the rudder could be the front spindles with some improvised rudders bolted on. The only issue is enough pvc to hold up a car is gonna make for a big, ungainly boat.
