I’m from the East coast of New York, and I particularly despise sticky or very dry summer weather, and I really don’t like being tan in any way regardless of season, so yes, cloudy or overcast but not on the verge of mild rain with some of the sky peeking out with flashes of sun is best, with the temperature being enough for short sleeves in the day and long sleeves in the evening.

We honestly need to look into bringing back home service. The US is not good to people below a certain level... I grew up in hillbilly country in the hills of Missouri. Service, such as kitchen help, housekeeping and childcare, was one of the first steps for many young ladies. Men often started as stewards, houseboys, drivers and such... And with this 'work history' they could get better jobs later.

My great grandmother was in service too. She was the housekeeper of young Princess, who was releated to the last emperor of Germany. The Emperor was her Husbands Uncle-in-law. My Great-Granny was very proud of her position and was some kind of a motherly friend to the Princess. I met the Princess a few times. She was always very kind to me. We talked sometimes on the graveyard, because Great-Grannys Grave was not far away from the graves of the noble Family. The Princess died a few years ago, nearly 100 years old.

Haven't been to Scotland yet, but I appreciate the work you do! I often think how hard it would be to prep for those roles! People can ask anything. I asked a blacksmith once about the arrangement of buttons on his pants (er, trousers) because I just couldn't figure out how they worked. It wasn't like a modern button fly. He figured out how to appropriately share with the audience the arrangement of overlapping buttoned flaps!
@clarakoenig7923

@@jenniferpearce1052 I've had to tell people "I'm sorry, I'm just a servant, I'm not educated enough to know about those things" more times than I can count, and then I've gone to research the thing they asked for the next time I get asked that exact same question! It is a lot of facts to remember but it's great, great fun to go and find them out, and figure out an in character way to explain things. Mental gymnastics!

I used to think, when I was a child in school, that I hated history - it seemed to consist of memorizing lists of which king won what war in which year. But eventually I discovered "re-enacting" and "living history", and I found it far more palatable. I like seeing people in period clothing, and knowing what they ate, and how they made these things, and what they did for fun. *That's* the kind of history I enjoy!

The bit you were saying about how demonstrations help to humanize history made me tear up a bit! I think that it's really easy to treat so much of history as just stories, but we have to know and to remember that these were real, living people, who had daily struggles and internal lives and who left their own marks on the world we live in today. Presenting history in this way encourages all ages to keep in touch in their own way. I am a historical reenactor and living historian. I spend most of my time going into classrooms to share the history of the 1860’s, the American Civil War, and Victorian America. (Which means I am also utter trash for Mrs. Crocombe and the Victorian way series). Having a tangible way to experience history makes one connect with history in so many unexpected ways. Thank you for sharing this. Ms. B
@purplealice

Exactly. People are more likely to remember an unusual food preparation or a visually appealing costume than they are to remember a timeline of who conquered who in which year. And the Victorian era is recent enough that some of us had grandmothers who had lived in that culture. And a bunch of fourth-graders going home and convincing their parents to let them make a mess in the kitchen when they try to make a cake without an electric mixer is much more educational than reading about it!

I’m from England and live on the land of lord Derby’s estate , the land on croxteth country park estate is literally 5minute walk from my house , the land and grounds are beautiful to say nothing of the farm and mansion, beautiful lakes and woods , thank you for showing this and teaching us not to take things for granted, as most of us who live on the estate often do , just watching how excited you both were was brilliant,I loved it thank you ❤️❤️

I previously worked in a living history museum and it was honestly one of the most fascinating thing I've done, both representing history and seeing how the guests would react to us. As a side note- historical cooking on wood burning stoves is severely under appreciated in terms of how difficult it was to bake! Oven temperature regulation seems to be an impossible task at points haha

WAIT I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS. Does Mrs. Crocombe know what you do?? I feel like she'd be so proud of you if she did! I'm sure that would be a wonderful conversation to have with her. This was so wonderful to watch! Having visited countless historical "preservation" sites, I'm nearly uniformly underwhelmed at underwhelming attempts at historical accuracy and, particularly when it comes to creating an atmosphere. The sense I got of being in the kitchen is just so completely delightful… and actually made me want to make some of those foods even more than the actual Mrs. Crocombe videos did! Something about you moving around in the kitchen and interacting just made it feel even more real. And GOODNESS Mrs. Crocombe is good! Not to mention Mrs. Warwick! Everyone there is so delightful and unbelievably gifted at what they do. I love how steeped in their time and world they are. That reference to curry and the Queen becoming Empress of India was fantastic. Also, I wonder who lives there! (Since you mentioned an actual family does.) I'm slightly disappointed it seems it's not the Braybrookes anymore, especially since that title carries on! I began to wonder if, since the kitchen produces actual quantities of food, that goes to the family…? Though I suppose not. (That would be incredibly cool, though, if that family were historical enthusiasts and could live out their dream like that!) Still curious, though!

There is a trick you can use where you ask them for an extreme request and then slowly get them used to the idea of agreeing to a smaller request. For example, asking for a trip outside of the country by plane. Then compromise and suggest a drive to audley end (offer to pay for gas and the trip)

I love how sassy Hana is and how she seems to make it her mission in life to get Bernadette to make as many 'she's mad' faces, tell as many 'ye olde Victorian plumbing' stories, and get her to say 'what's that?' to as many modern references as possible. It's like Bernadette and Hana work to counterbalance each other with Bernadette pulling Hana towards the Victorian Era and Hana keeping Bernadette firmly planted in the 21st century. They get and give the best of both worlds that way and their friendship is magical.

I have been to audley end house once, on a school trip. But we only went for maybe an hour, did not go inside any of the building and just had a picknick in the grass (right next to that artful hedge, actually). After watching this I so wish we could have gone inside! I am trash for Mrs Crocombe too! And I'm from the Netherlands, so it/'s not really something I could go do again easily :(

Thank you for taking us along to Audley End House and Gardens. It was a wonderful step back in time. Mrs. Crocombe is very wonderful, thank you for sharing your first meeting with her. Yes, I said first,(wishful thinking), Have you ever thought of doing a historically correct dress for Mrs. Crocombe, and presenting it to her? That would be a great deal of research I would think. Since you get to the UK sometimes I think it would be doable. I am a fan of both videos, the Audley End House, Mrs. Crocombe, and your videos Bernadette. For me, it was the best of both worlds. Thank you once more.
