The speech on sales and marketers ruining companies is 100% true. The number of upper level folks I’ve seen in all my years who show up, make some random changes, claim “look how much we saved/made!” and then dip out to the next company is obscene. There’s no passion, only accumulation.

Blizzard did work on a futuristic MMO, it was called "Project Titan" internally. Something didn't work out and they took the pieces and made Overwatch out of it. Double check all of this info, I'm just some random GW2 long time casual.

I think any game is going to be like this, and games that demand thousands of hours of playtime are going to be especially polarizing. I think part of the problem is that the corpos bankrolling games don't want that, they want a game that leeches everyone's pockets or they drop support. "...as someone who's never played Final Fantasy, why the fuck is everyone naked?" Because you can get more naked in FF than in BDO. If you could show the same amount of skin in BDO the FF pop would drop off.

The only truly different MMO is Guild Wars 2. How can I know this? Because I don't play MMOs. Never liked 'em. Huge RPG player, otoh. Which is why I'm playing GW2 for 8 years now like it's the most massive singleplayer RPG ever made, where real people are playing along as elaborate NPCs. When I tried to play other MMOs, I saw either a subscription fee, having to fight over loot, having to fight over a farm spot/resource node, constantly feel like a lvl 1 whenever an expansion comes out, or any other MMO bs trope. To this day, I have no idea how this many people can tolerate that stuff at all. So anyway, I play GW2 the RPG, switching between the POVs of my 6 finely tuned characters like it's a DnD party. And it was one of the highlights of my gaming years.

Creating a MMO might be the most difficult genre in game development. As stated, your competitors are still alive and you are now trying to lure players from those games to a new one with less development time and content. And you need to have a bit of something for all playstyles to lure a lot of people to your game. What a new MMO needs to do is combine the best systems of other MMOs, take inspiration from other genres and also create something new / unique that pushes the genre a bit forward. Only then can you realistically try to compete with the top. The amount of specific content like raids does not need to be much at launch but you need to have a roadmap of adding more so that the community has stuff to look forward while they play other parts of your MMO that needs to be repeatable / evergreen content. And the two last but important things for your success are that: Does the game look interesting enough for the player. The other is how is your in game shop. These can make or break your success from the start. Criticism of MMOs that people might feel for example: New World - no cute stuff. FF14 - "anime" or "weird". WOW - cartoony. Black Dessert - overwhelming to look at. Runescape - old. Etc.

The next big mmorpg is probably lord of the rings by ags. They learn with new world and do it better with that game and lord of the rings will draw even more people. VR is limited by motion sickness a lot. What i could imagine is given lord of the rings mmorpg with optional vr to explore cities like minas tirith. Vr can work in third person too but somehow vr games always go first person and standing. Imagine standing in your room, waiting for your raid. Hell no xD When people come home from work, expecially physical work, they want to relax and action in vr like beatsaber is not an option then.

I heard Mihoyo's making an MMO, these are the guys who have 3 gacha games on their belt, with a 4th on the way. Given how Stellar Blade came from the guys who made Nikke, I think wrapping an MMO under the blanket of a P2W game is the way
