Can we take a moment and really give Sam aka FootyAdventures some love? He’s done more to show off the Scottish (and the Irish leagues) than almost any other YTer. He’s an absolute legend.
He really is. His channel has done wonders for the game north of the border. Imagine we had people like that up selling opur game, we just have the bought and paid for wanks like Doncaster et al
"The passion, the warmth, the history that surrounds every Scottish club, people will fall in love, but people cannot fall in love with a story they have not read." Perfectly said
But once it becomes an international commercial product the passion warmth and history will be minimized just like it is in the premier league. I don’t think these Hibs supports want their stands to be filled with thousands of Chinese and Arabs like there are in premier league stadiums
The problem is 2 fold. One is economics and the other is the lack of quality footballers. The likes of Aberdeen and dundee united aren't ever to get back to theircoverachieving days until there is a more level playing field economically ( as there was before the bowman ruling, tv money and commercialism of the game) and when Scottish youngsters are out playing football, getting quality coaching in every community. The second could be achievable but in the uk governments don't like to spend money on sport.
@@graduke1aye but I’m a free enterprise world what can u do. Other than the American way with league sponsorship divided equally and drafts on youth players with ownership of that player dependant on the development you put in. The only way imo is for us the people to appreciate grassroots football more but we don’t we’d rather watch Southampton vs Burnley than our local junior league teams.
@@L1am21 that's just Celtic cause they're Irish in background but I mean all the other Scottish clubs the proper mid table ones and stuff besides Rangers and Celtic
Your recent content, from Wrexham, to Napoli, to the lower leagues, and now to Scotland, has been phenomenal, and, for a fan from the USA, so wonderfully educational. You are exploring the roots of the game, and demonstrating why European football has such devoted and passionate supporters. Thank you!
My Dad, a Hibs fan, passed away a year ago and we played Sunshine on Leith at his funeral. Beautiful end to to another wonderful video Nieve. Keep doing what you're doing, best Football channel going.
What a pleasure to have you north of the border Nieve! 🏴 Here’s hoping we can sort our deal out sooner rather than later and give this country the financial springboard that it needs 🙌🏻
I think the sky tv deal is the wrong direction. The SPFL need to try and disrupt the apple cart otherwise they will always be stuck at the bottom rotting. They should have made an spfl TV. Or they should sell the rights to a tech giant like Amazon or Apple and have the games broadcast on an online platform. We will never get a fair deal from London centric media.
Brilliant, I'm a Celtic fan, but seeing the Hibs sing Sunshine on Leith always brings a tear to my eye. The rendition of it at Hampden, when they won the Scottish Cup a few years ago, was spectacular.
As an American, I wish Scottish football had more attention paid to it here in the States. There is a purity to it that I really enjoy. I visited Edinburgh in 2017 and while I did not get the chance to see a match, I thoroughly enjoyed the city and its culture. Edinburgh derby is going to be quite a match, I will have to be up VERY early to watch.
Puriity ? You can get that in all the lower leagues in England, from Championship down - because the Scot PL is Championship, League One and Two, in one top division ! Don't forget, Scotland is 5 million people.
As Americans, we have a special connection to Scotland in the world of soccer. Their immigrants are the main reason we had any soccer culture here at all... Now in the modern era obviously there's a ton of other influences (I'm Latino, in South Florida so obviously when I go to Inter Miami games all the songs are in Spanish and based on Argentine originals lol) but the motherland of American soccer is Scotland... And i think that's awesome.
"People cannot fall in love with stories they have not read" Very poignant and sadly relevant quote. Massive props for giving this issue the coverage it needs. Great video.
Just subbed to your channel, loved this video. I’m a rangers fan myself, but i can’t get my head round the hearts Hibs game not being on telly. Shocking.
Scottish football isn't as bad as people think. Rangers lost the Europa league final on a penalty shootout, Arsenal & United failed to get to the final this season.
'Scottish football isn't as bad as people think. Rangers lost the Europa league final on a penalty shootout, Arsenal & United failed to get to the final this season.' - Cracking post.
But look at our teams in Europe this season. Rangers and celtic were the worst team in the ucl ever, celtic were underwhelming, dundee United bottled a lead against az (werent expected to win but could have gave a better showing), motherwell got humiliated and hearts got an unlucky group draw. To improve scottish football more teams like hibs and aberdeen need to be competitive in European group stages and have actual ambition instead of being content with where they are now
I’m a Hibs fan and your video speaks volume! Thank you!! Our game is massively undersold up here and if given more publicity/better Tv deals the Scottish game will only go from strength to strength. Ultimately meaning more finances for teams like Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen and the rest. Hopefully more people will see it that way! ps Sunshine on Leith one of the best anthems around glad you liked it 😁💚
@@stuntpeggnieve Thank you for another video, regarding other British Football, Nieve. You say you have been on this planet for 22 years? I have had my prayers answered, that I have been lucky to be, come this mid June, 58 years, on this planet. The only real bad footballer in the world, in my Dad's opinion, has been nearly, because he always used to say, nearly don't score.
Croatia's population is roughly the same as Scotland's, its domestic league is dominated by a couple of clubs, and they tend to do very well in the Euros and the World Cup. If a country that's been independent for 30 years can achieve this then I'm sure Scotland can.
@@rossmurphy5 Hasn't everyone got their independence, through having their own national parties, Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru, Sein Fein, the Houses of Parliament? It is true what David Cameron said, we really are stronger together, otherwise why did people only just vote in favour of the UKIP and Brexit parties, and leaving the EU?
I'm in Australia and with so many aussies now playing in Scotland I've never watched so many SPL games and have been thoroughly enjoying it. Next year I plan to visit the UK and will try to get to a game in Glasgow or Edinburgh.
Still working my way through your videos - they're all varying degrees of marvellous but this is the best I've seen. That last minute featuring both the Hibs fans and your reaction to them is truly special.
England is 10x the size of Scotland, population wise, and therefore it's understandable that their TV deals would dwarf ours. The real stark comparison is when you compare the Scottish TV deal with say Denmark or Norway for example. I think one of the big issues is that in a country like Denmark, for example, most of the TV execs negotiating the deals are Danish! They therefore have an inbuilt bias towards Danish football and value it accordingly. When it comes to Scottish football, wether it be Sky, BBC or whoever, the deals are negotiated at a UK level and the people doing the deals are generally based in London and you're dealing with people who literally don't know which one is "Dundee" and which one is "Dundee Utd". So is it any wonder that Scottish football is simply an after thought in the minds of these people. Scotland doesn't have it's own state broadcaster, we have the BBC instead. We are essentially "regional football" whereas in Denmark, Norway etc... those leagues are the national leagues and they have their own national broadcasters competing to televise those leagues. In Scotland we don't have that.
Agree, this is spot on. Other small countries run themselves and have interest in their own countries and their own teams, sports. In Scotland pretty much all big companies are run by England and their only interest in Scotland is making money, not promoting and advertising and investing in Scotland because they don't care about Scotland because they are English. The UK is a myth really, English people care as much about Scotland as French people care about Switzerland or Italians care about Croatia. Yet English people get to run Scotland.
Spot on. It’s insane how Scotland seems to be the only country where fans can’t watch their team if they can’t get a ticket and the game isn’t on sky sports. Playing away to Ross County means that if the match isn’t on sky then you’re basically not allowed to watch your team at all. So unfair
@@celticbarry9877 I think that's a little harsh, Barry. Remember that Scotland does have its own government and parliament. In my experience, Scotland is viewed the same in England as any other part of the country. Lots of English people study/work in Scotland and vice versa so there are lots of ties between the two, definitely more than the other countries you mentioned. I think if you spent some time in England, you'd realise we're not as divided as some politicians might make out!
The difference with the Scandinavian TV deals is that they broadcast every single game, so obviously get more money for that. However their kick-off times are different to ours - would there be any many fans at Premiership games when they are all on TV and none of them are at 3pm on a Saturday?
The fair lady and I went to St. Mirren v Hearts at St. Mirren Park a few week ago while over from Australia. It was excellent. The atmosphere inside Scottish football stadiums is exactly what you would expect from vlogs like these. Can confirm that Scottish Macaroni pies are something else. Bayne's bakery in Portobello make a brilliant one.
The only team in Scotland that opposed this ludicrous TV offer from Sky was Rangers. Every other team in the league voted in favour of it which is crazy. Scottish football is ranked as one of the top 10 leagues in Europe according to the most recent UEFA club coefficients (largely due to Rangers consistently reaching the later stages of European competitions). Scotland now has 2 Champions League teams in it but how can they compete with teams that spend almost a billions to build squads? Rangers faced a Liverpool team with a squad value of over £750m this season which is just nuts. Scotland has been condemned to become a perpetual 2 team league, with no hope of every competing again at the big table. People criticise the standard of player and lack of competition. A better TV deal means more money, more money means a better standard of player across the board, better players means better football, better performances in Europe, etc. It all has a domino effect. Scotland MUST get a better TV deal.
Shows Scotland needs Independence from the UK, in the UK they are fed scraps by English companies because they can. These same companies pump money into English football even English womens football and give us less than the bare minimum. Look at the BBC they pay about 200x the money for EPL highlights as they do for Scottish football highlights. How can they afford £70million per season for EPL highlights but only around £500k per season for Scottish League highlights? they buy the rights to the Scottish Cup final but do not show it on BBC in England etc meanwhile they put the English finals on Scottish BBC. Same with Sky Sports they are allowed to show like 65 games but they only show like 45, they have no interest in investing in Scottish football or promoting it but they will promote and invest in English lower League football and English womens football and English rugby etc, the English rugby deal with Sky is more than the Scottish football one even though Scottish football has more viewers and thats even with them giving Rugby less money than they used to, they used to give them £40million per season and cut it to £26million. All other small countries get more money as they have all their own national TV channels raking in the money, English companies rake in our money and then give us peanuts back.
@@BillyMcMorran ok, thats one way to do it. I prefer 3 leagues of 16, then regionals. Or 16-16 then an 18 team National league with regionals behind that, 2 up 2 down and a play-off system like the English. We need to do something different in the Premiership though to allow other teams a shot at the title. I would use something similar to the Belgian style and American styles. Have a 30 game regular season, then split the league into groups of 4 for a further 6 games. Top 4 play for title and forst Euro spots. Next 4 play for remaining Euro spots. Bottom 4 to fight against the 2 relegation spots. We can even do something similar for the other leagues to keep them entertaining. We also need to open the pyramid properly. I would have 4 regional leagues at tier 4. HL, LL, East and West. All 16 teams. Have the Champions all play a mini league for 2 automatic promotion slots to National league. We also need league rules for squads changed. Maximum number of foreign players limited to 16 or 17 players. Homegrown player quotas to min of 8 and squad sizes no bigger than 27 players. I would even put youth player quotas in there. Currently even the teams in Europe have players extra for the league that are not in their European squads because of the UEFA squad rules. We also need to distribute the TV money evenly across the league. The OF cannot claim they get to keep it because of Skys preferences. Sky make that decision and it is not for the OF to milk. The proze money can also be distributed better. The focus should on bringing the other clubs up.
The league cup is losing it's status south of the border. I think that a GB league cup with English and Scottish clubs both being in the draw from last 16/32 would be great
Superb video, Canadian here who lived anc studied in Glasgow in the early 2000s, I will absolutely agree that the passion in Scottish football for their clubs is on an epic level, as I became friends with St Johnstone, Aberdeen and Motherwell supporters outside of the two dominant Glasgow giants.
@Gumbohaha jealous English. better atmosphere in Scotland league 2 than the English premiership. It's a joke, English teams all have 2 songs that are sung quietly.
@@Eggyfart83 The average attendance in Scottish League 2 is 567, but that's the 4th tier, so I assume you meant Championship. The Scottish Championship's average attendance is 2,200. Absolutely no way on Earth you can pretend that it has a better atmosphere than the Prem. There's a better atmosphere in the English non-league (average attendance = 3.3k) than there is in The Scottish Championship. The last Notts County match I went to had 11k attendance, to watch them play a meaningless dead-rubber against York City.
@@0xmoo think you are jealous the statement is infact correct going on capita Scotland has the best support in Europe ! It’s easy to crow when sky through millions to England while the rest get a pittance. I’d love to see you on the same deal as us then see how long you have the best league in Europe. England doesn’t want Scottish teams out performing them or why wouldn’t sky put more money on the table to Scottish clubs to help our game thrive more . It’s not a level playing field & everyone knows it .
I'd actually say Scotland being in the UK is what holds Scotland back, other countries Greece, Norway, Sweden, Croatia, Romania etc pretty much everyone get better TV deals than us because those TV companies in their countries are run by people from those countries and they want to invest in and promote their football teams. In Scotland English companies give us pennies because there is no real Scottish companies. The BBC pay the equivalent of 35x the money for EPL highlights as they do Scottish Premier highlights, the BBC have the rights to the Scottish Cup final and don't put it on English BBC channels. England holds back Scottish football. It's not the case in Norway where their own people and companies have interest in their own country, in Scotland we are a backwater of England. The BBC put the English womens FA Cup final on all countries main channels but put the Scottish Cup final only on Scottish BBC.
I've watched many of your videos. You're very professional, enthusiastic & knowledgeable about all things related to the game of football. I hope you will get a chance in sports broadcasting with one of the major networks in the future!
I love your videos because you have a big talent in transporting the emotions to the viewer. I dont exactly know how you do it, but it works :D keep on!
So lovely, Yuma. I’m chuffed that you feel this way because all those emotions I feel, I try my best to relay them, with just the use of a mobile phone!
I find Scottish football interesting because the fans care about the team more than us English. Some of the mathematics of Scottish footie and the history is astonishing for a sparsely populated country. The stadiums are unique I cannot understand people that slate it.

This video was brilliant! You really capture the energy in the stadium, the unique traditions and the local people - it’s something many of us will never get to see four ourselves and this was the next best thing! Great stuff, thanks! 👍🏴
The Scottish footy teams are needing a few Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's to come..It's getting boring watching the huns and the fenians win most things season after season...
As hearts fan for the best part of 30 years, the hobos singing sunshine on Leith is something all football fans should experience (if only once). Fills me full of jealousy lol.
Despite the fact that Scottish football has been dominated by 2 clubs it's still a place that has so many clubs with distinct identities and rich history and profile.
Although Celtic dominate the League. since 2010 Dundee Utd, Hearts, Inverness, Hibs, Kilmarnock, St Mirren, Aberdeen, Ross County have all won silverware be it Scottish or League cups
Expecting an Edinburgh derby - no matter the stakes - to be a feast for the eyes is a rookie mistake. For some unknown reason, the footballing quality drops about a league and a half and the result is completely random and independent of either team's form. I still wouldn't miss one for the world, though.
To be fair in the Hibs v Celtic game you went to, you can notice large empty sections of seating. If more were on TV those empty sections would be larger.
My Danish team Brøndby IF actually sent Hibs out of Europa League back in July 2016 after 120+ mins played with penalty kicks to get the winner. The first match in Scotland was ofc. not on TV... But what a crazy macth and memories from back then!. :) and a fun fact, John McGinn from Aston Villa and Scottish national team played for Hibs back then, he missed the first pen (the only missed pen out of 9).
I remember Jason Cummings scored a goal that was disallowed wrongly and the keeper we had in goal was shocking otso Virtanen and you scored like a minute in
Went to Easter Road the week after 9/11 for a rescheduled UEFA cup tie against AEK Athens. As a Pompey fan I can honestly say it was as special a night for passion and atmosphere as I have ever experienced
There is an overarching sense of pointlessness to Scottish football that does ruin a lot of the enjoyment for me. The last time a team that wasn’t Rangers or Celtic won it was 1985, and if you look at the amount of times teams have won it it goes Rangers - 55, Celtic - 53, Aberdeen & Hearts - 4. That’s a sense of dominance that just means it’s completely pointless ever supporting anyone, I’m a Newcastle fan, I know what it means to root for a team that are not winning anything, but there was at least a glimmer of hope, a shadow of opportunity here and there. If I was a Scottish person not from Glasgow, I’d see little desire in rooting for anyone.
Can't believe what I've just read in your post. From a Newcastle fan I'd expect a bit more common sense. You support your local team no matter what. The 2016 Cup Final win was one of the best days of my life, as have been the League Cup wins. I honestly think it's a shame you view football this way, 'I'd see little desire in rooting for anyone' outwith the Ugly Sisters because there's next to no chance of winning the league. Are you even a football fan?
@@BigSlinky7In no way do I believe a team is about winning trophies, I am not that kind of fan, however I do believe that in being a football fan you should believe and have a hope of achieving things, and as a Newcastle fan I can believe that my team has a hope of achieving something, whether it’s a League Cup or FA Cup or something…if I were a fan of anyone in the Scottish league that isn’t Rangers or Celtic, what is the point? Neither of them will realistically ever achieve anything, maybe a random win in the 1980s like Aberdeen is nice to run off of, but when you’re talking decades upon decades of dominance in two clubs it just feels pointless
As an American. I thank you for this. This kind of passion is great and definitely needs more attention. Id love to goto Scotland one day and catch a game. Sports teams in the USA just doesnt have the kind of history and ties with the community that European sports do
That is certainly true about our professional sports, but I do think that American college sports fandom is our best analog for European sports fandom.
@alecerdmann8505 yeah I’m French and I’ve been to college football and basketball games, it’s equally as fascinating and rich in terms of history and culture as our football. The NBA and NFL are fake and terrible but, although the atmosphere is logically a bit different, watching Ohio State against Notre Dame in South Bend was really similar to legendary European nights in Champions League football.
You have a gift for getting to the heart of the matter. As a Forest fan I've made a note to take up the offer of going up to experience a Scottish game next season.
Those at the top of the Scottish game, the Maxwell's the Doncaster's are as corrupt as they come. They are only there to serve two clubs, that is the problem.
As a Celtic fan, yes, I would love a more competitive league, we always talk about the league being our bread and butter when we think about Europe, but the only season we all always remember is 67, bc we did something special that year. It would be nice if every trophy won felt like that, and if that means others win sometimes, im fine with that
Your main point is absolutely correct. The problem is that the powers that be in Scottish football, the SPL and the SFA, are dominated by Celtic and the new club Rangers and Scottish football is run for the benefit of those two. The SPL and the SFA only care about them and they only care about themselves. There's no interest in maximising revenue for anyone else. The rest of us are seen as feeder clubs (buy a St Mirren star, stick him on the bench and he won't score against us again). The SPL was set up to maximise revenue for the big two and that's the way it's gone on. Glad you were there to see us humble the wee Greens ;-)
Great video once again. Scottish football could use some investors coming in and helping the smaller teams. Wheter or not that's likely is up for debate. When that said, Celtic is an amazing club and you don't win 50+ championships if you're not a well runned club with quality players. No matter the league.
But theres only 12 teams in the spl with a population of 5 million 🤔 the same as Birmingham alone so we do ok when u think of it look at Ireland and wales 😉
Fantastic… more and more vloggers like yourself, Sam from Footy Adventures, Thogden et al are realising how passionate and undersold Scottish football is. Sadly too many people south of the border go to their automatic and uninformed mantra “aww but it’s crap though isn’t it, farmers league” - thank you for your video
Considering Aberdeen is the last club outside Glasgow to win a championship 40 years ago shows there's not enough parity to get attention from overseas.
When Hibs Fans Sang After winning The 2016 Scottish Cup Final it -is one the greatest moments in Scottish ball history and i say that as a Rangers fan - also it was the 1st time they won the cup in 114 years
Scotland has the same problem La Liga has with Madrid and Barcelona with Rangers and Celtic , but there’s even less money in Scotland for the smaller clubs.
there are a couple of reasons scottish football is under valued competition? only 2 clubs have won the SPL since 1992 in that time 7 clubs have won the EPL refusal to reform the leagues system the SPL team face each other 4 times a season and they refuse to change it 2 club's dominate the finances and until these 2 clubs share the wealth the league will still be below the championship in the EFL in standard and they dumped sky a few years back for Satanta sports then came back cap in hand for sky who now held all the cards the fact is its poor league with a very poorly run administration
It sounds like such a sensible decision but I imagine plenty of the owners of clubs in the SPL will have something to say about the revenue loss from one less fixture against Celtic and Rangers. It all boils down to whether or not the right people are willing to do what’s best for the game
Celtic fan here, the problem with the question at the end is that if we don't win, Rangers do. Other than that yes absolutely i'd love to see the league become bigger. I've never understood why someone with a bit of cash hasn't bought hibs or hearts etc yet. It'd be a much easier route to Europe than buying a lower league english team and would elevate the standard.
I only recently stumbled across your channel and instantly fell in with your content. The fact that you cover so broadly all of English/Scottish football in all the leagues is fantastic. The leagues too small. I think they should try and push it to 18 teams. There's no excitement for me anyway in watching teams play each other 4 times a season and theres also no excitement in 1 team dominating for so long in Celtic.
As a Celtic fan this video was needed badly. I’m not going to spend all day talking about the financial part of the game because it gets tiresome. Glad to see another channel highlight Scottish football in all its glory. Big shout out to Sam aswell 👏🏻👏🏻 Keep promoting the heart and soul of the Woking class game, more money will improve the leagues up here but we’re a small country. The other clubs in the Leagues need to pull in that fan support from abroad but I won’t hold my breath.
I wish the Scottish Premiership to have at least 16 teams. 12 is just not enough teams weather there is a play off round afterwards like the league in Belgium as an example. There must be a playoff round if there's 14 teams, since the season ending after 26 fixtures just feels to short. The Scottish Premiership is very mid, because of these problems. And even if the league increases to 16 clubs, the clubs that battle for Europe, could have a difficult time getting used to the new 30 fixture schedule.
Farmers league doesn't always mean shite mate, below the top 2 it is quite a competitive league, some teams overachieve considering the budgets they have to work with, the SFA refusing to help improve our game financially doesn't help 🤷🏼♂️
@@unchainedmentally2147 Chelsea haven't imploded. the EPL isn't stagnant like the SPL where Celtic & Ranger have bought the title for the past 100 years. The EPL has a natural flow and rhythm where big clubs dominate but then get knocked off top spot and on it goes.
