Josh Are you guys not considering the divorce part of this? She is saying she makes 120k with only 30k of the debt and wants a divorce. She’s not going to stick around to pay off his 470k. Most of the debt is his and he’s never home to cater to the marriage because he has to work for the debt. That 370k is not promising to him. He’s in deep bulls🤬🤬t right now.

@hornetguy9063

Yeah I think Dave Ramsey forgets about tax a lot in this scenarios. Especially in California. Probably something like 40% of that money is being dumped down the rat hole in income tax and other deductions in California. Doesn’t even count local non-income taxes. And of course, the federal government only allows you to write off student loan interest if you’re under a certain income level. They have essentially $210k to work with after expenses. That can go fast if 2/3rds of it is going to loans, and 1/3rd is going to living in California

David Aguilar the need for a credit score goes away if you stop borrowing money. Only way to keep up a score up is to continually borrow money and go into debt. And the only reason one would intentionally set out to keep up their score is because they plan on borrowing money and go into debt.

It's a psychological norm we have as a society. It's quite interesting if you like how the brain works and what we do innately. It's a habit for us to not project problems outwardly to people we talk to. Our brain makes us work into it slowly or secondly. And we see this every day, you come home from work wife asks how your day was. You say good... But tiring. We put good before bad, and then dwell on the bad. It's interesting.

Freedom comes with taking responsibility for our actions and if we do not assume those responsibilities then someone else will (eg Government) and take away our freedom thereby.

C Engler this is correct. Modern leftism around the world has basically devolved into “no one should ever suffer for their mistakes”. $468k of student loans? Well, that’s a mistake. The cost of that is that you have to work whatever job pays you the most amount of money. Even if it means having to spend 80% of the year in the Arabian desert or Arctic circle.

Dave's advice is always spot on, but man he really needs to do better math with these projections. 370k after taxes leaves you with less than 250k take home. So, they cannot "pay off 250k per year and live off of 120." They can maybe pay off 230-40 per year and live off zero. Or they can pay off 200k and live on 30-40. But, that's the bare minimum.
@Jikjuka
@Jikjuka 4 года назад
I agree and she gets taxed too so probably they take home around 205 to 210 a year, they live in CA where average cost of living is high, add to that approximately a total of $30k year just in student loan interest. 4 years sounds about right.

@Rocky Capone I don't know she's making a lot of financial sacrifice for this dude. She only owes $30k and makes $120k, That's a very manageable debt to income ratio. She could get rid of that in a year. He, on the other hand, has $470k in debt and makes $250k that's way less manageable. She now has to rice and beans for this guy who she also can't even spend time with? Basically, she writes a check to him and she doesn't even get to have a relationship or a romantic life? It feels like she shouldn't have gotten married. Now she's legally liable for his education and he doesn't even have the time to be a husband, why did he get married?

@phaldaz
@phaldaz 4 года назад
In a weird way, it actually makes MORE sense. Once someone makes a certain amount of money, the human nature kicks in and says 'I'll use their money and protect mine' which is just a way of saying 'since I have a lot of income/capital, folks are willing to bend over left and right to loan me money'. Take that philosophy and multiply it by security in one's job and a years and boom .... $500k debt
@edgehodl4832
@edgehodl4832 4 года назад
@@phaldaz I make 200k and got 500k networth, and I dont even try hard, meaning I do spend sometimes without budgeting. There is no amount of lattes and coffees they cant justify 500k debt. @Antoine Carey I agree with you. She should've not married him. He's not husband material. She only has $30k in debt and makes $120k/year, she could be done with her debt in a year, she could've married making what she was making or even less who was debt-free and been in a much better position financially and domestically. I know your part of the "I hate women even if they're right" crew that frequents the Dave Ramsey comment section, but all your doing is highlighting how ridiculous it is to do that every time even in this case where the woman made the better decision. I'm writing this for lurkers because you're a lost cause. Both men and women make good and bad financial decisions. Saying otherwise does nothing for you but give you a momentary feeling of catharsis because of whatever hang-ups you have with over half of the human population. It looks more desperate than you realize.

I have two degrees but i made more money with my trade. Degrees are a scam unless you meet the right people in the process of doing the degree or you learn a real skill. Most degrees are useless when you get right down to it. A profession is different than a degree. A degree leads or can lead to a profession but not necessarily. Theres a difference between having a business degree and being an accountant. The latter is actually experience and fulfilling a role.The is a difference between having a degree in computers and being a programmer . The former may lead to the latter but not necessarily. thats the big issue for graduates the work only begins after the degree. In a trade you can pay bills even as an apprentice and you can pick up work casually to pay bills.

@einstein1102
@einstein1102 4 года назад
One good thing here is that at least they both are still trying to work it out - going to marriage counseling together, and even willing to sit down together while calling Dave. But they need a plan money wise - nobody needs to go to school right now. They already make good money as is. Get rid of the debt first then you can think about school after. Once they're debt free and have all that income still, I doubt that they would go back to school. It's the common problem with people where you got tons of debt and thinking making more money would be the solution because you don't wanna cut back in lifestyle. But some sacrifices have to be made. $170k + $250k If you live on $70k or $100k (because you're in california), you will be debt free in less than 2 years.
