Will we make it onto TV? Or will we end up on the cutting room floor? We'll have to wait and see, but it was certainly fun having a film crew follow our epic narrowboat journey to the Crick Boat Show with Paul and Anthony from RU-vid channel ‪@NarrowboatLifeUnlocked‬ on Narrowboat Morning Star for the Channel 4 programme Narrow Escapes. In this episode we leave Shardlow with the film crew and head east on the Trent & Mersey Canal through the automated locks at Sawley, and on to the River Soar.
Hello! If you are new here we are Caroline and Pete, and 2021, after 10 years living in Texas, we sold up and moved back home to the UK to live full time aboard a 60ft narrowboat, One Day More, with our West Highland Terriers! Join us in our day to day life as we continuously cruise the canals and rivers of the UK. All of the ups, and the downs and everything in between!

I'm in Los Angeles so I'll never know what became of your TV opportunity but I hope the film folks told you what a professional job you do of your own vlogs. Your framing and pace are spot on. You use stills, black & whites and visuals for clarity and interesting texture. Your music cues are super. Your narrations and the ambient conversation are interesting and intimate and you really know the value of letting the scenery carry the show. Your vlogs have style and are a real opportunity for those of us who will never see the UK canals to appreciate their beauty and your skills. So very glad you share it all. Thanks so much! PS: Poppy and Hamish are stars in their own right!

What an absolutely beautiful comment, you know how to put a smile on our faces! It's so reassuring to hear, as this has been a very steep learning curve, but now I feel I've got into a flow and have tweaked the videos in response to the lovely comments from our viewers. we are glad we can bring the beauty of the British canals to everyone thanks to the power of RU-vid 😊

Thanks for another great video Caroline & Pete. Beautiful surroundings. The narrowboats look a bit vulnerable out on the big river, although it was calm. We watch UK television channels via a VPN. We'll keep an eye out for the Channel 4 programme.

You're so welcome Neil! We are glad we are able to bring you along with us on our journeys by the power of RU-vid! The programme hasn't aired yet, and the latest we had heard was Easter 2024, but that's been and gone now. We have seen it advertised on the season trailers for Channel 4 though so I think it could be any time soon. We will let all of our viewers know if we hear anything. I wish we had sorted out the VPN thing when we were living in the USA! 😊

The brick buildings are so cool! Going into the river area was so pretty with the leaves on the trees and the blossoms. Poppy and Hamish are cute as always.

Weren't they beautiful buildings Joyce! So much history in Shardlow and I love that they have protected the buildings by giving them Grade II status so they can't be changed too much from their original look. River cruising is beautiful, but just a little lacking in places to get the dogs off easily if they need a comfort break! Thanks for watching as always 😊

It's so lovely to hear that you enjoy them! We are so happy we have these videos to look back at Jasper enjoying his boat dog life! We cruised with Paul & Anthony for abut 7 months total, when the original plan was 'a few weeks', but we enjoyed each other's company so much we couldn't say goodbye! Now we are not travelling with each other we still drive to meet up quite often as our boats are nowhere near each other now! I am just finishing up editing the last of the footage up until my Dad was sick and sadly passed, and then I took a break from filming. The last of these videos will be out by the ned of April and then our content will be current (well about 2-3 weeks behind as it takes a while to edit!). Thanks for sticking with us! 😊

Thanks Ken! The biggest we see ourselves in 32in on the boat. Not sure if I want a 60in version 😂. I see you are a Clarke with an E too! That's our name, and my maiden name was Clark without an E, which I always maintain is the 'correct' way! Very confusing for people when I fill in forms and they think I have made a mistake! 😊

That was a beautiful trip. I’ve always said I wouldn’t do rivers but that did look very calm and pretty. The tv programme better not put you on the cutting room floor….don’t they know who you are!! 😜. Nice seeing Pete doing cassette emptying as usual (even though he never actually did). Love the new music too. Perfect for this vlog. See you soon xx

Its was such a beautiful trip, and when the boards are on green, river cruising is beautiful! Ask Tom and Sharyn about their River Soar experience though, on their very first cruise! I am sure Poppy will not be happy if she ends up on the cutting room floor! And you know how much Pete loves his cassette emptying job, and argues if I try to take over 😂

I am on a very quick trip to see Sophie in WI this week, and thankfully landed 24 hours before the crazy snow storm swept through, otherwise I think I would have been stuck in Chicago! @@onedaymoreaboard Wasn't that much snow. Then we are use to it - if it had been a foot or more of it. Might have taken us twice as long to get somewhere in it. One holiday years back. Drove from in by Elgin to her parents house. Took us twice as long but we made it. Would I do it today? nope but was in our early 20's and thought nothing of it. Hope you had a good trip up 'north' in the land of cheese and good beer.

Thank you SO much! We have just bought some high quality lapel microphones thanks to the generosity of our viewers, so the sound quality will improve significantly, well that's what we are hoping anyway! You can be assured that the footage from the Soar didn't end up at the bottom of the River Trent on this journey like last time! I have almost finished editing the next 2 videos and it's all there, phew! I still mourn the loss of that phone at Beeston, although it did enable me to upgrade my iPhone for better quality video footage, so that was a plus! 😊

Is it just me or was that last lock before you got on the River Saw more complicated than most? I'm in awe that you guys learned everything you have to know to cruise the canals. Unrelated, but exciting I think: I will be heading up to the ranch just outside of Waco to observe Monday's solar eclipse in totality for 4 1/2 minutes! :) Leigh

Hi Leigh! It seemed complicated, but we have learnt now to just follow the instructions and it's actually much easier than the manual locks, as all the work is done for you! Yes, it's been a very steep learning curve, and a mostly enjoyable one, but we are honestly learning new things every time we cruise, or easier ways to do things! All of my Friendswood friends have been discussing about whether to brave the traffic and drive out to get the best view of the full eclipse! I think the last time was in 2017 wasn't it (perhaps that was just a partial eclipse though), and I remember all of the stores selling out of the glasses! Good luck, and let us know how it is! 😊

I’ve been to Trent lock and walked around a bit. Lovely area and nice pub and tearoom. Didn’t realise how close I was to Shardelow 😢 I would have gone and explored had I known. Hope you make it onto the series 👍 do you know when it starts?

Shardlow is definitely worth a visit, with so much canal history and the heritage centre too. We were so lucky to get the best mooring spots too! The programme hasn't aired yet. The latest we had heard was Easter 2024, but that's been and gone now. We have seen it advertised on the season trailers for Channel 4 though so I think it could be any time soon. I never get to see the articles written or the videos filmed all the way over here. Did you make it into the film? Or do you know yet? It always makes me nervous to see narrowboats on the Ship Canal, the Wash, the Ribble Link and the tidal Thames. It doesn't seem like the boats are made for that! ❤

It still hasn't aired yet Dorothy. The last we heard was Easter 2024, but that's been and gone now, so we will just wait. We've see a trailer of the upcoming season on Channel 4 though and Narrow Escapes was included in that, so maybe it's soon! We have only done the tidal Trent so far, and that was far less scary than we had been led to believe, but when we had the chance to go across the Wash, when we went all the way down to `boat on the River Witham, we said no way!! Hope you are keeping well 😊

Hopefully you'll find out soon... I'm doing good. It's Eclipse Day. This area is going to be crazy. People are traveling here from all over to see totality. It's worse because it's on a Monday. For some places it's been a three day party. I'm too old for all that! ♥️

We dined at The New Inn as we spent the night moored at Shardlow. Shardlow was a very busy place. We were lucky to find a mooring./ This was seven years ago. We had hired out of Sawley.

We were lucky that it wasn’t too busy when we were there as it was early May, but I can imagine it would be far busier in the height of the summer season as it’s such a lovely place with so much canal history 😊

Hi Elizabeth, thanks so much for your lovely comment! We used to refer to ourselves as virtual gongoozlers when we were binge watching narrowboat vlogs, as we researched our new life aboard, once we had learnt what that word meant! David's videos were the first we watched that gave Pete the idea of this different life, and then I surprised him by saying a whole hearted yes, without hesitation, when he raised the subject of us selling up and living on a boat too! You may have seen on other vlogs showing the floating cafe in Braunston called the 'Gongoozler's Rest'. Our first winter aboard we spent in Braunston Marina and it was on our doorstep which was not good for our waistlines as they do the best breakfast sandwiches and cakes! 😊

Thank you for sharing how your narrowboat venture began , as is very similar to my beginning with my vw transporter...it's only 5.2 metres though 🤭 I'm amazed at the precision you and Peter manoeuvre your lovely boat through the locks and canals 🤗❤❤ and video your travels with your lovely little tailwaggers 🐾🐾🐾🐾 enjoy ( in joy )
