Three years into the restoration of the historic Michigan Central Station in Corktown, scaffolding fills much of the building's ground floor, including the main waiting room with its incredible 65-foot tile vaulted ceilings.
Thank God this building is being restored! I remember going there as a child and it was so very beautiful. Detroit needs to save it's lovely old buildings.
Used to ride the train from Plymouth to the station as my parents worked on the C/O railroad. All through the late 50's to the middle 60's. What a grand old building, glad to see it being returned to it's old self.
Cool story, Bob. I drive past the old Plymouth Station every day. I wish I was around when the line was still running. I'm glad too, that they're preserving this once architecturally exquisite example of our previous era.
The proposed Amtrak plan includes the long-overdue step of connecting the US and Canadian passenger rail networks at Detroit/Windsor. This station is located right next to the Detroit-Windsor tunnel and is the perfect site for a station which finally allows people to go through customs to transfer between American and Canadian trains.
@@telam1744 you say "the mall in Canada" what mall would that be? We've got lots of malls but to get to a great one you'd have to go all the way up to Toronto to The Eaton Centre or better yet the West Edmonton Mall (largest mall in North America). Other than that your malls that I've been to are better and better pricing than ours.
@@mariposavioleta9007 Eaton Center is nothing but a hangout for gangs, with the occasional shooting now and then. Everything in it is brutally overpriced. Why anyone would want floor space there in this day and age, is beyond me. Why anyone would be caught shopping there, is equally perplexing... The W.Edmonton Mall, now THAT was something worth seeing. Haven't been there since the mid-90's, but I can only imagine that it has become a problem area, much like the Eaton Center
Went through the entire building building years ago while it was still empty and abandoned, I wish I could find the pictures we took. I never expected it to be brought back and it's nice to see it happening
You're lucky if they destroy an old building to rebuild, they just leave the ruins and build new somewhere else because it's cheaper. But yes, it is nice to see Ford reusing this building.
>> instead of destroying and building it from the scratch. >> And much uglier and with so much lost, as is pretty much always the case when they rebuild from the scratch
It will be great to see that building restored. They will also need to work on the surrounding neighborhood to complete this magnificent restoration. I'm looking forward to seeing the results.
Hats off to Ford for reimagining this incredible landmark . Boy, it would be even more incredible if it could serve as a station again too. Detroit is definitely the hub for those of us interested in Art Deco architecture. Simply amazing.
👐👐👐👐👐👐 Driving down Woodward and seeing that blding I always hoped that one day it will come to life. One day when I come back home to visit I will definitely visit it.
I took the Amtrak just from Detroit to Ann Arbor so I could be inside of Michigan Grand Central even then it was awe inspiring. I'd love to buy a condo.
Glad Big Bill is doing this ! But.....I believe Amtrak Should be reincorporated into this architectural marvel ! But Trains ARE part of Modern Mobility neighbas !
Great idea restoring the station. Now all they need is to bring in Amtrak trains, VIA trains, high speed rail from Chicago and Toronto, and MDTA commuter rail. Plus for Matty Maroun to fix that bridge! I live in New Orleans (used to live in Milford MI as a preteen) and even I have heard that it has fallen into disrepair.
Same thing with the Pierce Arrow factory in Buffalo 🏭 so much potential, though there might some work going on there now, but nothing at this level. Great to see 👍
I used to go all the way to the roof and take pics. I once through a rave in a secret location at train station. If you were there you already know it was a banger. Many banging ass parties in southwest. Miss those days. The grimness’s out it all was poetic.
I love to see old buildings like this getting restored to it's original glory instead of tearing them down and building eyesores like they do in New York .
When they show positively about Detroit only a few people comment.but if it was something negative it would be a bunch of out of town people and haters talking sh..t
Stories like this always make me a little nervous. Every major American city has had one. But it seems as if, once the initial glow is gone, people just stop caring, stop going, stop supporting. I hope Ford and Detroit can do better.
People need to think and maybe consider buying a Ford and support the people who support them in their area I used to live in Grosse Pointe and spend time in that area that is an incredible building thank you to Ford motor company.
Having spent a large portion of my misspent youth riding trains across the country I find it unusual that the train platforms were not enclosed. Or was the platform area in front of the building covered at one time? Do the tracks still run under the river? Thanks to whoever may answer!
I think the role the car played in Detroit's urban decay is massively downplayed, with car centric urban sprawl gutting the city centre; it's good that a car company is paying to repair some of the damage they enabled in the city core.
@@johnperic6860 I mean yes, but initially the outsourcing was to the suburbs- which are completely car dependant infrastructure. Not that this hasn’t happened in practically every American city, Detroit is just 40 years ahead of everyone else
Summer is here again with the restriction of movement of and recess to be enjoyed by most workers. ;It's an opportunity to utilize and redirect this funds into life changing investments as to secure financial sustainability!!!!
I'm diversifying myself and recently I added Crypto to my portfolio because of the recent dip in price. I'd say "think like a bear and invest like a bull".
After the dip in price of Cryptocurrency from a higher level, some traders and investors view this as an advantageous time to buy or add to an existing position, I'd advice family and friends to trade rather than holding, because buying and holding doesn't guarantee maximum profit.
It's surprising that people are so scared and discouraged by the sudden drop in value. Most Crypto traders and investors are less knowledgeable about the dynamic of Cryptocurrency. it's a time to buy dip and connect with good traders that knows the Ins and outs of wall street wizardry. I'm much covered and secured about the market thanks to TRADE EXPERT HENRY BROWN 😁✅
The gas car. Ruined the railroad. Caused the decay of this building. The Electric car. Breathing life back into what the gas car almost destroyed. Kind of ironic how the company that caused the demise of this building is rebuilding it.
1:46 - So, even in restoring a historic transit building, the auto makers are still doing all they can to destroy mass transit. Doing restoration on such a building sounds cool... but this stinks. Electric or no, we can't afford to keep thinking this way. Bring rail in, please.
Detroit was a poster child for multiple failures of a big American city; these days, not so much. Yes, Motown has a LOT of work to do but, IMHO that city has turned the corner back into First World Rule of Law and affluence. Middle Class doesn't know color unless discussing money, which is typically green :)
