STILL WAKES THE DEEP is a return to the first-person narrative horror genre for The Chinese Room, creator of critically acclaimed games such as Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and Dear Esther.
You are an offshore oil rig worker, fighting for your life through a vicious storm, perilous surroundings, and the dark, freezing North Sea waters. All lines of communication have been severed. All exits are gone. All that remains is to face the unknowable horror that’s come aboard.

I have to say, I'm very impressed with the quality of the dialogue writing and voice acting. Reminds me a bit of Everybody's Gone to the Rapture in how naturalistic every spoken line of dialogue feels.

Oil rigs are very large platforms out at sea positioned over oil wells. The are floated into position but once in place don't move. The living/working platform is very high above the water, and one assumes this is in the North Sea, which has notoriously terrible weather. People, mail and resources are generally flown in by helicopter, and I guess really heavy items would be shipped out by boat and lifted onto the platform by cranes. I don't know what a typical work roster might be, but it could be something like 1 month living and working out at sea and 1 week home. Work hours would be 12 hours on and 12 off, along with up to 200 other men. Very dangerous work, but very well paid. In 1975 telephone calls would have been very expensive, if they had access to a phone out there. (just happened across an article that said they were restricted to one 6 minute call per week in the '70s)

God damn, this is so well done. This game looks and feels incredible. OH MY GOD, it's the studio that did Dear Esther, Amnesia A Machine For Pigs and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. I can't wait to play this myself.

Normally falling into water from this height is highly deadly. Falling with straight legs first can save you though. But games and movies like to picture falling into water from great height like a falling on heap of cushions.

Ooh, hell yes, I'm all in for this; I'm split on either playing it myself or watching you continuing it lol. The dialogue and voice acting are already top-tier. Fun fact, the VA for Caz is Alec Newman; he's Sebastian in Dragon Age 2 and Adam Smasher in Cyberpunk 2077. Dude's got good range.

Fun stories when my brother used to work on an oil rig: One night my brother went out trying to get some fresh air and saw his friend standing outside having the same idea. After a quick whiff, he went back inside to the lounge for a late night snack and saw the same friend inside the lounge.

I'm embarrassed I didn't catch it right away, but Campbell is called "Trots" because he's the local labor union rep and left-wing political type. "Trots" as in Trotsky. I rewound to see who had the National Front stuff in their room and of course it was Addair, the big heavyset bald dude who talks shit to you in the canteen. The National Front is a far-right political party that was at its peak in the 70s, and is known for its leaders having ties with other more extreme fascist organizations and for street violence in the 70s both scrapping with Antifa leftist types and anti-immigrant (especially anti-South Asian: Indian and Pakistani) vigilantism. Not a brit myself but pretty sure for the modern UK audience that poster + the time frame is the equivalent of a giant neon sign saying THIS IS ONE OF THE VILLAINS IN THIS GAME.

I like watching Welonz because she’s not one of the pure horror channels. They get SO boring so quick!😒 I mean, I like horror a lot, but you really need some variety. Sadly, 70% of the games Welonz plays are games I plan to play myself.😭

Hm, I think you should continue with this game. It has potential. We don't get to see that often a horror game on the oil rig site. It's isolating, gloomy and dangerous experience. It looks like they disturbed something while digging there. I didn't see any change in physical appearance so far, so I'm wondering If this being targets people mentally first as hallucinations are present early on. Nobody had anything on them. Main character is already infected. His condition will probably progress as the game goes. He might end up completely insane, while living in terror and desperation out of complete silence and isolation. Sounds dark, but it fits the story. Despite the horror, I think that this would be another valuable experience for you! It's interesting as well. Have fun!

I'm a sucker for horror at sea; I like what I've seen and I'll definitely watch this if Welonz continues it. I'll probably get it as well. Also, The Chinese Room are developing Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2. Fingers crossed it doesn't suck (ah ah ah).

Id be down to watch more of this! I'll probably play it myself, so I might not watch the series immediately (although I can't imagine its some 30-40 hour experience) , but I would love to see you see the end of it.

So basically it's Outlast on minimals lol There some parallels between these two games: hiding in lockers, having no weapons, collecting information about what's going on as main character goes through the exploration of the place, feeling of being followed/watched, overall paranoia vibes. But Outlast is definitely scarier and have its own unique athmosphere (btw, I love Outlast II more than the original game even if I'm in minority about it), and this feels so far more... schematic adventure? But to be fair, voice over performances are good and Scottish language gives it a lot of soul. It would have been better if we were allowed to explore/read more stuff and not just climbing and gripping lol But I'm intrigued by the beginning, so if Welonz decided somewhere (in the distant future lol) to continue this, I'll definitely watch it!

This reminds me a bit of that vr game, Blood & Truth but with supernatural elements instead of crime drama. Must be the first person perspective and prominent and authentic accents. By the by, Oil Rigs are permanent off-shore fixtures in the water, they are massive platforms meant to drill specific parts of the ocean floor, which get supplies from ships that dock with it and choppers.

The very detailed environment and realistic lighting look gorgeous, and the tension is well done so far, I wouldn't mind if you kept going :D Also good thing there are subtitles, couldn't understand half of what they're saying lol it sounds very natural and real though.

Oh this is exceptional in some ways but frustrating in others. It's a thing with the Chinese Room. Heavy on the walking sim with hardly any actual game mechanics, exploration or gameplay. Meanwhile the immersion, detail and voice work is off the scale. If this studio, so obviously talented, would blend Alien Isolation features and exploration we would have game of the year contender.

I almost 1.5h into the game and I love the setting and the atmosphere but there's so much hand holding it's kind of insulting. It's like the devs have zero faith in the players. A couple of Frictional style light puzzles would do wonders but no, the solution to a problem is always right in front of you. Turn this valve to close the steam to move forward is the extend of the interaction you'll get here. Not to mention it's completely on rails and every door that you don't need to go through right now will be locked. Despite of all that I am enjoying it for the story and the atmosphere.

A little work is needed on the controls, but overall, this seems to be a game with good potential. On another note: there are times, while waatching your videos, that I so want to suddenly teleport right behind you during a jumpscare, and simply put my hands on your shoulders as if to grip your neck and either growl or just whisper in your ear "Time to Die". 😆
