It bugged me A LOT that Olivia marketed this movie as “female pleasure” but NONE OF IT WAS CONSENSUAL?? Like, if you’re trapped against your will and dont know whats going on then you cannot consent?? So all of the sex scenes that were hot and fun were made extremely uncomfy?? Which would have been fine (because thats the point) except she didnt market it that way?

i really had beef with how they used acne/skin texture to make harry “ugly.” it was giving fat suit energy, like this actor can’t carry the persona we need so let’s just change his physical presentation to reflect what society views as unattractive when in reality these are just very neutral body characteristics some people happen to have. rubbed me the wrong way
@NVMil
@NVMil Год назад
Yeah, i get that. I used to have super bad acne a few years back. And now that I have it mostly under control Im still left with some scarring. It's a super big insecurity of mine. And whenever I see what you mentioned with Harry of it being used to make someone ugly, brings up those insecurities. Like you said this is something a lot of people deal and can't control. It's to the point where now that you mentioned it, I probably won't be seeing the movie because it's just going to trigger me when that scene happens.

Kelsey's takes are very white feminist rooted...like I love you girl, but as a PoC woman I did not connect to this movie at all and agree with Garrick and Zach. We don't have to like this movie just because a woman made it - Olivia tried so hard to be deep but all of it was frazzled and the pace made no sense. This movie was not good - it's entertaining, but I certainly do not conflate that with being "good". There are more cons than pros.

What if a yt woman tried to write get out?” Is literally exactly what I was thinking after that twist, ngl esp since they cut out like all of Margaret’s plot. a couple points tho: we actually do know that the men are the only ones not trapped there bc they “go to work” every day and that’s the only way any of them get to leave the simulation; the movie is actually 2 hrs long and the entire middle hour goes from around either Alice seeing the plane crash or seeing Margaret “fall” all the way to the end of the dinner party show down/w Chris Pine and literally NOTHING is revealed that entire time including when Alice steals Margaret’s medical file and every single thing is redacted!!! Like wtf was even the point of that scene if she wasn’t going to find out any information?!??? Also, the way the guys felt about slapping a greasy wig, glasses and some acne on Harry Styles and calling him ugly is the same way women feel about every single makeover movie lmao like they literally put Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Emma Stone, etc in baggy clothes, glasses, and a frizzy/curly wig (which is a little racist ngl) and pretend no one would ever be attracted to them. It’s laughable but not really bc it’s actually infuriating. Lastly, The incel aspect of this movie actually was very vindicating for me, esp bc the male lead(s) *were* these attractive, charismatic ppl bc too many ppl think incels are just ugly guys. The fact that in the real world Harry Styles’ character started out as his simulation self for the most part until he lost his job and started feeling emasculated at which point he started being shitty & gross really points out that *Every Man* who thinks he’s entitled to a woman is an incel. And I actually like that part of the movie. The fact that it barely spent any time on the most horrific elements of the plot, pretended to be a mystery despite not knowing *how* to mystery and was too horrific to not be a horror movie, and the outright refusal to focus on either of the WOC despite their plot lines being the most interesting parts of the film really brought the whole thing down for me.

Hearing the ending to the original script makes me want to watch Shutter Island. Like was Leo's character actually insane or was he being convinced that he was insane??? They should have stuck with the original script 🤔 because even having it be open ended is more interesting than being like "yes,she was definitely in a simulation"
@cheskaarana6097

I feel like they deliberately distance the plot from Shutter Island because filmbros would easily bash it as a total clone with a "woke" twist, and totally dismiss it all together.

My main problem with this movie is that it was marketed as female empowerment and female pleasure... when the whole plot twist was about women being held captive and being literally sexually abused/rap3d. ALSO how the movie made it seem how incels are "ugly" "undesirable" guys when a majority of them fit into the standard of "normal/atractive male". So many abusers don't look "scary" or "greasy"

I am with Garrick - just from the synopsis alone (available from similar video reviews just like this one) the story line does not make any sense. And now we know why - turns out it's more of a tampered script case instead of a half baked first script case. I mean that original script sounded great! (Though turned out Ms. Wilde and co thought they could pull Christopher Nolan level mind game...which was simply *not true* in this case 💀). Also I swear Kelsey made the movie's current story sounding more reasonable than it actually is 😅😅🙈 Anyhoo glad to hear you three again! 😺

I also liked it Kelsey! Also I thought that the ending with Gemma Chan’s character could be interpreted that she was the one who actually created the whole thing and she had Chris Pine’s character as her front man because she knew that the only way it would work is if men thought it was a man’s idea. That’s what I got out of it.

My very dark read on it was that Chorden Pineterson had abducted a hot lesbian who'd ratioed him on twitter, but she'd figured the whole thing out and had simply been waiting for the opportune moment to off him. (I'm basing this theory off of nothing but Gemma's correction of Florence's posture in the first dance scene, and my abysmally low expectations of incels.)

GP’s needs to do a movie that passes the Bechdel test but also considers feminism in a more broad sense. Especially the perspective of black women, more so than I think this movie was attempting to portray. The fact that Olivia said going down on a women is empowering… that’s weird. Like hell yeah for female pleasure but Florence’s entire character is in an non consensual relationship… that shouldn’t be bragged about… He is still doing it to her, not with her. I just wish I had more respect for this movie because I love seeing Female directors do cool shit ❤

no no, you guys are right. As soon as I left the theater, I ranted about the movie for 10 minutes. My friend and I decided it was a cult, Bunny agreed with her husband to live in the fantasy that her children were still alive (mimicking WandaVision), the ballet was part of the brainwashing (teaching order and repetitiveness like Black Widow), Margaret was the red flag of course, Jack obviously felt his husband dynamic off-balance because his wife wasn't giving him attention and making more money (he was 'looking out for her' to feel like he had the protector of women role), Shelley saying that it's her turn is basically a hint of the cult's reconstruction and a message that women do it better, and the point was that it was supposed to be feminism, but in contrary, it was just the scope of how women were viewed back in time. I expected Alice to burn down the whole neighborhood when she kills Jack because we saw that violent tension between her and the leader of the cult, Frank. But no. Alice runs out and takes a few seconds to even recognize what was happening (which made no sense bc her being a surgeon does not fit her freaking out the whole time). I originally thought she was gonna do something to break the system, some type of action after exiting the world. Breaking the set, running out her apartment, looking at her husband's body, or immediately contacting someone! Very unsatisfying ending. The concept was good. It was a good idea, but it was not executed well.
