Hey Josh.. my Dad was a retired MIlitary Officer and Pilot. Learned from age 13 till 18 to fly. .also learned from a one arm civil air patrol pilot too.. wild.. piper with a stick.. fun as anything. Taught parachute jumping without tandem.. all hand pull. but had to make one life saving jump as a CAP officer into the Mountains to save an air Force pilot who ejected after a major accident. JUmped in with my pilot t aking over. Went in with my first aid kit.. saved his life and radio guided in help. When I got into tv news we used to fly all the time in our CHopper for BBQ in NC> got so well known they put in a landing pad.. so much fun. Heck.. even the Washington Post came in to do a story on it. Flew the congressman my old buddy for years. He loved it. Good luck.love your channel . I can't fly on my own anymore. due to combat injuries. IED's
I'm a college senior, CFI who also has to take 3 week breaks from flying for studies. I feel ya, thank God for cool friends! Great video Josh and good luck on finishing out the year.
I stopped at Hard 8 in Stephenville on my last drive through to Houston back in September based on seeing you go there all the time. It did NOT disappoint! Some of the best brisket I've had. Great video as always Josh.
I just flew to Stephenville a few days ago for my first cross country flight. I had no idea you could get a ride to the bbq place like that. I know what I'm doing next time I fly down there.
Josh, yesterday I mentioned you to a guy from Burleson, TX in his Cessna 195. I told him about your flight and he said he flies to that restaurant all the time. I'll have to make that trip one day. I met him years ago when he live here in Louisiana. If you get a chance to meet him his name is Pat Atkinson. His daughter and her fiance (Mark Brown) are corporate pilots. Mark is into photography also and blogs.
Looks like great food!!! Looked a good fun trip with friends. Another awesome video by MRAviation101!!!. Josh I really like your editing you do a great job. Thanks for taking the time to share this part of your life with us.
Josh, one of the things that really stands out about this video is the camaraderie of the aviation community. Hey, we're going to lunch, you wanna go with us? and 'Hey, when you call Hard Eight, you want to ask them wait for us? Yeah, you'll find that in other 'communities', but it just really impresses and reinforces the how much flying IS a fraternity and community. At 0:25 into the video, you're doing your new standard introduction, and you talk about the good and the bad, and you're showing a grey and yellow tail dragger bouncing it down the runway. Was that you, or someone you knew, or just someone having a bad day? I've wondered about that, and just hadn't asked yet. Anyway, looks like a good place for BBQ. Thanks for taking us along, and tell Kurt not to worry about the landing, crosswinds always screwed me up, too!
Gary C Hi Gary, your absolutely right about the camaraderie. It’s great, especially when you build up a good friend group where you CAN just say “hey I need a flying fix. Anybody going?” And you’ll have several say “hop in man!” It’s fantastic. As for the landing, that was a random shot at Oshkosh. I think it was a perfect visual example of what I’m talking about in the intro sequence. I’d be willing to bet that was a training flight with someone and his instructor (or maybe a “knock the rust off” flight into OSH). I bet that pilot learned a good lesson from that goofy landing. We all do - we have to learn from them or else we don’t improve. But anyways, yeah, some random guy. I wish I had more exterior footage of my terrible landings so I can use it. Maybe one of these days when I find someone to work a camera!
Josh, we've all been there on the landings, and the take offs, and everything inbetween. That's what I thought it was, we all have bad days. I used to have those kind of friends, but I'm long and far away from the flying community now, I get my fix watching videos like yours and others here on RU-vid, and I'm thankful for all of you guys. You keep me involved.
If you ever decide to travel up the Mississippi River North of Memphis, during the summer months land at Reelsfoot Lake and park your plane at the Restaraunt for some out of this world catfish. Else head over to Sikeston and while you are in the pattern the folks on the ground will be happy to place a call for Lamberts courtesty van to shuttle you to the home of the thrown rolls. Another favorite for pilots in the region.
I feel for the Controller who told you to have a "good night". I work shifts at weird times, so I have to think quickly before I say "Have a good one" because I'll end up saying "Have a good night" when it's day time.
Love the videos as always! Never anything wrong with having fun while having a moment to learn. Perhaps one day your travels will bring into NC and a chance to sample the tarheel states BBQ battles!
josh, I been subscribed to you for a long time. a friend of mine bought a new Cessna 206 turbo stationair in 2014.i have not flew for at least 40 years.after watching you I flew with him from robbins field in ononta, al to dauphin island and back. was a great bucket list.
Your buddy's 182 is hangared pretty close to my Arrow! We actually went to Hard 8 last weekend (and Uvalde for Breakfast, as I knew Fredricksburg would be packed). Really good BBQ! We'll certainly be back.
Well now Josh , the ride for Bar B Q in that fun bird is gotta be ? Ya ! or maybe more fun than your allowed to have at one time . Just watching the video brings back the thoughts of what is felt when your free to fly like a bird, only thinking where do we go next? never caring because that is what you do so well.
Great Videos as always. When I heard the name "Hard 8" I thought it was familiar. I live in Washington State. In 2008 on Vacation in Dallas I rented a plane went flying with a local instructor. The 2 objectives was see the Dallas Fort Worth area and lunch. The Instructor directed us there, was great.
That BBQ looks awesome. I notice that it's really not that far from the airport which is a good thing. It makes walking off dinner or lunch all that much easier, lol.
Another nice video Josh. Totally understand the need to clear your head. Having a very busy full time job, on call all the time, I try and get to the airport at least once a week. Fly for an hour then go to work. Helps keep things in perspective and keeps me flying and my C-172 exercised. Might I ask what our major is since your in your senior year.
Great video as always Josh! This Thanksgiving I flew a 182S to VEL from APA, they’re great planes. If you want some photos of the flight PM me your email and I’ll send them to you. It’s the only way I can share my experience with you at the moment. Keep up the good work!
I wasn’t impressed with the Hard 8 in Grapevine when I ate there, I hope that the one in Stephenville is exponentially better. Great video, hope you guys had a great time, hope to join you in the skies soon.
Hard 8 is tourist bbq. I would think a Texan would know better lol. If you get the chance, fly to Taylor and walk across the street to Louie Miller's bbq. ALL Texas bbq masters got their start at Louie Miller's. Thanks for sharing, miss the old share avaition days. I hate that y'all don't post anymore
Enjoy your videos. Try coming to Kirbys BBQ across Hwy 14 from the airport, KLXY, Mexia Limestone. Its pretty hard to beat too, Wednesday thru Saturday!
Thanks native Texan for the recommendation. One day I’ll make the trip from central Arizona to Texas and will keep this in mind. We watch the videos to learn from good and bad, and in this case you guys missed the “what” part in the initial communication for landing, you guys missed stating your intention of landing on Runway 14 and still made a comment about liking short and sweet communications. Also, do you still feel it was a good choice to land 14 when 32 was already being used?
The old saying of "don't let the manifold pressure exceed prop RPM" is a little misleading, and in many airplanes, just doesn't hold true. When you get into high displacement, high output, turbocharged recips, the MP almost always exceeds prop RPM until you start down. For example, in our airplane, the RAM power settings for climb is 35 inches, 2500RPM. Cruise is 32 inches, 2400 RPM.
This is my third time watching this video. Can you please give use this full list of your top 5 fly in restaurants? Local Texan love the Hard Eight and your videos.
Are you going to do a video on Coopers in Llano? I've flown in a few times with friends from out of town. They make it easy with cars you can borrow at the airport. About a five minute drive into town.
I love hearing people say u can’t run MP over RPM. how then is it possible for our turbo charged aircraft to fly. We are constantly running 28 or 30 inches and 2500 RPM 🤔
Indeed! Turbo-equipped aircraft are a different animal when it comes to power management. It's very, very common to "oversquare" a turbo aircraft in cruise. Even in a naturally-aspirated aircraft it's harmless to do (i.e. during takeoff and climb). The best thing to do is refer to your POH/AFM's operating limitations and recommendations.
The "over square" rule is actually an old wives' tale. Check out Mike Busch's article on "Why 'Over Square' is Good" here: www.avweb.com/news/airman/184483-1.html
Yeah, that is a great AvWeb-article. We need to stop repeating the "over square" rule. It's nonsense and also wasteful and noisy. Run that 182 at 2000/23 and feel the power and the lower fuel flow! :-)
Is it just me, or should I be vaguely worried about such an empty co-pilot's position? Even assuming reasonably close quarters between the two positions, I suspect there is a risk of parallax error when trying to read the pilot's displays from the co-pilot's position (assuming pilot let co-pilot have the controls). Is there a reason (aside from perhaps cost saving measures) to only one instrument and the centre display directly available to the co-pilot?
Great video's and I think you are having a lot of fun and you make a great narrator too, which isn't something most folks do well! Did you recalculate your takeoff weight after eating all that amazing looking bar-b-q :-Q
Just an aviation question. What does it mean when the controller mentions all taxiway service markings being non-standard when your listening to the ATIS??
Georgetown has had a lot of construction over the past year and they haven't fully finished the project. All the taxiway markings are not fully painted / complete
