We continue our journey westward along the K&A canal towards Bath, stopping off at Devizes. As we settle in for the week we notice something on the map is conveniently close... and given how rare the opportunity is for a boater, we decide to make the journey, with the help of Wes's sister, to see a special ancient monument ⛰️

I used to live in the area and have driven past on the a303 hundreds of times and seen a few people weaving about trying to get a look at the stones over the years. . There used to be a little side road that you could drive up and park close to the stones. That was years ago long before the visitor centre was built and they closed the road and re grassed it. There was even plans to divert the a303 through a tunnel once to keep it away from the stones. Great video hope you enjoyed devizes and the flight down 🙂

Honestly . . . the BEST tour of Stonehenge I have seen. Now, I won't be surprised by the Visitor's Centre, nor the bus. Thanks for walking. It made a difference. You both are delightful.

I think you should of finished the blog with a good old Britain classic, a rock cake! If you don't know what that is ask your mum. It is a small cake made with flour butter and sugar. Add sultanas and put on a baking tray,they should be mounds hence the name rock cake and sprinkle with caster sugar.

Another commercialised asset that used to be free and accessible to all. As a lad I went a few times, and as others have said, you could touch the stones. Glad you got your ash can sorted, looks like you have the same as we have. Great quality and holds a few days ash.

Great vlog. We used to run around those stones and play for a while when we were kids and on our way from Kent to stay with our Grandma and Grandad in Devon for 2 weeks! Dad could park very close to the stones, I am talking early 1960s. We feel it’s such a shame that it’s all so commercialised now. 😔

I like a few others that have commented grew up near Salisbury and can remember walking around the rocks. It's a shame they keep you so far away. When you go to Salisbury next can you please take a pic of the white panda in chalk on the hill. I used to pass it on the bus on the way to school. Unless of course they have turned that hill, like so many other countries do into a housing estate.

It is such a shame, back in the day when I was young , long long ago 😂 Stonehenge was free and you could go up to the stones and touch them and get up close and personal, I think £20+ pounds puts it out of some peoples especially those with a family’s reach. Thought the merch shop was so funny :) I am sure when you did the chip cheers, it was a Stonehenge shape ha ha

When I was a boy we went on a school trip to Stonehenge, got off the bus and walked right up to the stones…long before the visitor centre and security barriers…glad you enjoyed your visit and Devizes! 😌🙏

I grew up just outside of Salisbury and I remember as well walking around the rocks. It's a shame they don't even allow people even close to them and the price is horrible.

Great video as ever. But may I comment on your bus link for narrowboaters? I've looked at the Salisbury Reds site website who do the buses around here, and Pewsey doesn't really work. You need to catch route 2 from Devizes and that will take you to Shrewton then it's a walk. the buses are roughly every hour. It seems that the only bus to the visitor centre is the regular tourist bus from Salisbury. It's about 2 miles with no pavement on an A road, so ordering a taxi for that last bit from Shrewton might be an option!
