We went to Compton 

In 2002 I working as a welder in LA for a few months. I was 18 and didn’t know much about the world. One day my co worker invited me to his home on In Signal Hill, and that evening I headed down to Long Beach on the 710 freeway. I got lost so I pulled off the freeway to look at my map. I had NO idea that I had gone into Compton. Then my truck ran out of gas so I turned into a random neighborhood and parked in front of a house. I got out and opened the hood of my pickup to see why my tuck stalled (fuel gauge didn’t work). Within a few seconds there were 20+ guys with me. I told them my problem with my pickup and that I got lost and truck ran out of gas. By this time it was dark and was already late to my bbq with my friend. After talking with the head guy for a while he told me I was ok and there was no problem. He also told me they were Crips and this block was their house and it belonged to them, and nobody comes in here and parks without their permission first. Ever. That’s the law. Personally, I have no problem with that and it’s actually a smart thing to do. I told him I completely understand and that it won’t ever happen again. He then told me that the street was already having a bbq and if I was hungry they would feed and give me 5 gallons of gas so I could be on my way. I said yes thank you! They brought out a huge plate of food (home made bbq!) handed me a cold beer and filled my truck with 5 gallons of gas. I spent at least an hour out on the street talkin about life and getting to know those guys. After that they shook my hand and I left for home with a full belly and gas in my tank. I will NEVER forget their genuine kindness and generosity they showed me that night and I am grateful. It’s a small chance that any neighborhood would bring in a stranger and care for them like those guys did for me. It’s a rare thing. Show them respect and be willing to help them anywhere anytime, and obey the law. And don’t ever lie to them. They’re sharp as a tac and will figure you out in no time. Thank you again my friends I won’t ever forget your kindness and help. I will always be a voice for you guys in the world of negativity. You have my love and respect.

I went to Compton last year. Dirty place, but the people are extremely friendly. They're not like how they were back in the 1980's and 90's when they would shoot you for being an outsider. They are very welcoming these days.

Most people in gangs was bullied as kids, I was one of them. My thinking was if I joined a gang I wouldn't get picked on and neither would my other friends that got picked on just because I was a gang member. They don't tell you that dudes go from picking on you (in my case for stuttering and being a nerd) to wanting to kill you or beat on you for being affiliated with dudes who did something to their homies. I still have flashbacks from shit I seen, did, and put my parents thru when they heard about what I was doing in the streets and the trouble I got in at school. And I was raised by good parents who did their best, my mother became a therapist and my dad was a jet mechanic, amusement park ride mechanic and did the water for the city...we just lived in an area and went to a school with a lot of gang activity and I fell into it from peer pressure. What did I get out the streets? I got a name...I was one of the top 10 guys the opps wanted to kill just because of my name. I went to juvie several times and had to deal with opps in there too. I saw some of my friends catch real time and go up the road. I saw somebody get shot off his bike by the opps and die at the hospital. I took part in stupid crimes that go against who I am as a person. Never killed anybody but came close a few times. Got shot at multiple times. Also being in the streets fucked up a good chunk of my life...without that gang mentality I would be so much further in life than I am. And you get name that only stays as long as you keep doing shit, die or go to jail. And nothing's cool about this shit. Yeah you get access to more females, you get a reputation for not being a bitch if you really banging, people get scared of you, get some money...all that cool shit. But then you worry about opps, your own "homies" hate on you, the cops fuck with you every chance they get, and your parents worry about you even more...my mom was so disappointed that I joined a gang. She didn't raise me like that and neither did my dad. I was told I was gonna die by 16. It almost happened before that a few times. I know this is long but, this street shit is not cool. These kids gotta understand that.
