Weaving Dishtowels on my Old Leclerc Counterbalance Loom for the 1st time

It's been a while since that I have made a video about my counterbalance loom. Today, I'm happy to share with you the weaving of my first dishtowels on it. The goal of this project is mostly to figure out what works and what doesn't work with this Leclerc loom. Spoiler alert: it still needs a bit of TLC! #weaving #loom #warp

PATTERN

WARP YARN
For the warp, I used 8/2 cotton from Maurice Brassard in 4 different colors. They are all available through The Woolery's website : woolery.com/ma...
Here are the exact color names:
-Naturel-100 (natural color)
-Noir-83 (black)
-Olive-1244 (green olive)
-Viel or-1418 (old gold)
WEFT YARN
1-For the first towel, I only use 8/2 cottolin from Maurice Brassard in the natural color (C100).
2-For the second towel, I used cottolin again, but this time in four different colors. I used the same colors that I found in the warp.
Here are the exact name of the colors:
-Natural-C100 (natural color)
-Noir-C83 (black
-Olive-C1244 (olive green)
-Viel or-C1418 (old gold)

3-For the third and final towel, I used cotton chenille is the color “Blé d’Or”-C926 (golden yellow).

MY LOOM
The video is all about my old counterbalance loom. This loom was produced by Leclerc between the 1920s and 1940s. It's 36" wide and it weaves!

As you said, make sure that everything is very square. When you beat, ALWAYS make sure to pull in the center of the beater. I noticed that several times you were off to the side. Perhaps you could put some kind of mark to make sure you pull from the center. Other than that, I love the three towels.

Thank you! I feel like you might be right and everything on the loom is not square 😅 I'll investigate that! I did try to compensate the wonkiness of the beater by holding it a bit more to the side and hope to have a straighter beat. That's clearly a bad habbit hahah! A mark in the middle is a great idea 😄

Watching you, when you beat with your left hand, you aren't holding the middle of the beater like you do with your right hand. I had the same issue with mine. I put a little mark in the center and paid attention to making sure I put my hands over it when beating. No more unevenness.

That's a really good tip! Thank you! I feel like I was also trying to compensate for the wonkiness by beating harder on the left. But this is probably also part of the problem 😅

Beautiful work that you have done to revitalize this lovely loom! I agree with the comments about hand position on the beater (lefty here). Also consider making sure that your fabric canvas is square. It can easy be tied in slightly off balance, as can warp tie on being slightly off (you may have slightly difference tie on tension between left and right sides). Sometimes it’s not the loom, but what we are doing to the loom.

I have the same problem with my Gilmore jack loom beating uneven. My loom is at least 66 years old and for the life of me I can't figure out what is causing this problem. However, when I remove the cloth, it is perfectly on grain. I guess this is just one of life's little mysteries. Thanks for sharing your weaving journey.

Thank you for taking us on this journey with your new to you Leclerc loom. I recently got the exact one like your loom and I researched online to see what others have done with their looms and I came across your videos. Your videos helped me to put it together. So a BIG Thank you. Fortunately the heddles were replaced by the previous owner and the brake system was updated. I only have to deal with one of the reeds being rusty. I heard about using naval rust jelly which I plan to try soon. I am looking forward to putting my first warp and see how it functions. Watching this video gets me all excited :)

I bought an 8 shaft table loom, I am new to table looms and shafts, but I really love the texsolv as they are so easy to thread and move around, 1 of mine broke while warp was on, I managed to use a warp cord to fix it at the ends and it did the trick, on a pratice run of narrow warp, I accidently put 2 warps on the same # 4 slots instead of # 3, all I had to do was cut the top and bottom, and move over to # 3 shaft and again tie some warp at each end to fix the problem. Yeah I wasted 2 texsolv by doing so, but was easier then having to redo everything as the 3 mistakes were in the center, now I check before lashing them on. I really love my table loom. Been praticing a lot, so now looking for towel pattern, I know your pattern are always so nice and easy. The pattern you used is similar to one I did on my rigid heddle, just I did not know what size yarn to use, I have bought both 1 8/2 and 16/2, from your vidoe I believe the 8/2 would be better. I bought the 2/16 as I would like to weave a skirt with a thin yarn for summer. I really love your videos, you are full of energy and explain well. My practicing was on 4 3 2 1 shaft warp. Thanks for your videos.

I would think it’s because the loom is out of square or just the beater isn’t squared up to the loom. They still look beautiful. Vinegar will remove rust, you can soak your heddles and reeds. Their is a video here on RU-vid about it.

During Covid I bought an older mystery 27” jack loom. I took it apart to clean it any of the metal bits that was rusty I cleaned with oooo wire wool and a brass brush. The worst wire headles I tossed and bought new. I then coated everything with furniture wax. So long as it’s not too damp/humid the rust shouldn’t return. As to your beater bar it looked like the right side was lower (maybe just the camera angle). I find when I tension my warp the right side slackens for some reason giving the fell a crooked line maybe that is what is happening with your beater bar check your warp tension! I am still learning too and love watching your journey into weaving and your bubbly infectious personality.

Be careful about switching to texsolve heddles on a counterbalance loom. Unlike on a parallel counter marsh or a jack loom where you are directly lifting the treadle with the force of your foot, therefore lightweight makes it easier to lift, counterbalance looms often benefit from the weight of the metal heels to make for a smooth Weave. I haven’t made the transition and have it backfire on me myself, but I was warned against it when I had some of the same issues by several experienced weavers of my weavers guild. That looks like an earlier generation of my LeClerc fanny. I was lucky in that my Heddles were pretty much fine. My head bars had a little bit of age related wear and tear and oxidation, but modern metal heddles just slide across them. My only experience of warping a multi chef loom had been with metal handles and once on an Erica, and of course, a rigid heddle loom where the heddles don’t move. I was utterly surprised at how much harder in someways though it got easier as I got more used to it. It is to warp long texsolve heddles than metal heddles or short heddles. With the short ones, you can push the Ross easily with one hand in a simple motion, but in the long ones you have to push at the top and the bottom, the top and the bottom and the top and the bottom to Scooch them over any kind of distance or use two hands simultaneously, unless you have enormous hands. With metal, you can just slide them with a flick and they keep going and develop momentum. So with the metal, it is a lot easier to pick your next hole to thread through. That said, the wear and tear on my body for lifting metal handles over and over and over again was not Worth the ease of warping. But I would recommend just replacing yours with newer metal heddles. Also, there’s something somehow precious about the sounds normally operating loom makes, I’m not talking about high-pitched squeaks, but the rhythm and the rattles and the thump and the natural motions and such can be very meditative and special. You’re weaving is beautiful as always, and I love, seeing the videos of all your wonderful projects. I’ve just watched several videos in a row, and I especially love the overshot series. I always get inspired to weave more when I watch your videos. Though I am not sure it is good for my bank balance lol I have talked myself in and out of buying a shaft loom. I currently have a rigid heddle loom (bought after watching your videos lol) and really should make the most of that loom before I spend more money but I keep drifting back to, perhaps I should give a shaft loom a go. The only thing that has stopped me so far is I now have no space left in my house for anything else lol Though I am looking into replacing my broken summer house to one that functions and I could put another loom in there lol ;) T x

Hahha I'm so sorry 😅 the weaving rabbit hole is a big one! Multishaft looms are fun, but I'm still having a blast on my rigid heddle loom too 😊 Space is also an issue here. If I could, I would have 45" loom, a spinning wheel, an inkle loom...and lots and lots of yarn! Hahah

I also have a really good quilting sewing machine so I should be grateful for what I have, and yet, here I am wanting more lol I tell you what though, we would both be handy people to know if we ever have an apocalypse event lol We have a good amount of skills between us lol T x

If cleaning the rust off of the bolts or making sure they are the same size and type doesn’t work I wonder if the vertical or horizontal pieces of the beater bar are squared on all sides? The wood may have warped slightly over time while in storage. You can test that with a leveler. Also, maybe adding an extra washer to the side that’s not beating down as far between the vertical and horizontal pieces may help (put some felt on both sides of that washer to help protect the wood).

I'm thinking it's you're too wide in the reed. I'm restoring that looms bigger sister, a 45" and have similar rust issues. I'll be addressing it with rust convertor. It chemically changes the rust into an oxide that stops any further rusting and protects leaves a black coating harder than paint. I haven't touched the metal headles yet .. If you're going to try the synthetic ones I'll let you be the guinea pig there. Was the rear brake on your the rachet type or the newer drag style? Mine's missing some parts and I'm tossing up whether to spend the $300 for the upgrade, or pull out the welder and make replacements for the older type. I'm leaning to making the parts to help keep it looking original.

So interesting! How do you apply this rust convertor? Can it be applied with a simple piece of cloth? Or do the metal parts need to soak in it. I believe my brake system is the ratchet one. That's a though decision you'll have to make! I'm curious to know what you'll decide on and how it'll go. You'll be the guinea pig on this one 😊

I just had a major pang of jealousy after seeing your beautiful loom! 😉 One day, I’ll acquire shaft loom, for now my RHL brings me a ton of joy. One thing that really helps with removing rust is… ketchup! Yep! Just dab a lot of it on those rusty bars, let it sit for a whole and use a metal brush, wire wool or even a metal pot scrubber, wash it off and oil the bars right away. You don’t need lots of oil, you can wipe the excess off after a few minutes. As you flat I imagine is pretty dry, you shouldn’t have much rust buildup.

There is a liquid product called 'Evaporust' that works wonderfully. I have the 45" version of this beauty and I soaked all the hardware in it and it looks great! It didn't turn anything black, didn't require any sanding either. Thank you for your videos!

@@Curly_n_Yarny I had access to a long narrow container that the heddle bars would fit inside... it wasn't very wide so it didn't use up all the product. I lined it with a really big trash bag to make sure it didn't leak, and soaked the bar, the shaft brackets and screws, everything.. it worked really well. you might be able to fashion something with pieces of cardboard then lined with plastic. I hope it works as well for you!

Your loom isn't square- that's what is causing the stipes to be uneven on the beam. Measure from the right corner of the front to the back left, and from the front left to the back right (sort of an X through the middle of the loom. For the loom to be square, the two measurements must be the same.
