That is so awesome! You took a portable grill and turned it into a Cadillac. The finished product is pure brilliance. I'm definitely doing this when I get a Weber Go-To this month. Thanks for the tutorial, Tom.
Nice mods, Tom! Especially the temperature gauge. Instead of wooden handles, I might use a (free) chopstick from Chinese takeout to insert in the vent hole you made. Gives good reach, and chopsticks can be found anywhere if I misplace one. Thanks for the inspiration; I’m always in favor of making a purchase mine with mods!
The only thing I do to my grill is add some aluminum foil to the inside bottom making sure that the vents are cleared. It makes cleaning so much easier and better for the finish from flames hot oil drips and charcoal ash. Handles on the top vents, no need for me for such a small grill I just use whatever grill tools I have on hand to adjust. I do have a grill grate tool that allows you to pick up a hot grill grate with food on it and move it to add more wood if needed. Real handy that tool I believe I got it from Home Depot. The temp gauge is a good idea it would be nice if Weber puts it on future models.
Would you go with the Jumbo Joe or the Go Anywhere? Liking the rectangular design on the GA for indirect, but the grill seems a bit small. Great video, thanks!
Just a quick question: Have you seen anywhere that they sell leg extension(s) for the Smokey Joe? I like the size, but, want it to be a stand alone, not sitting on a table. The Smokey Joe size is perfect for a travel (RV type) grill for two people.
Otis Lamb Thanks for Watching Otis! I have not seen or heard of Legs for the Smokey Joe! Weber does have the grill table that fits the Smokey Joe, however they stopped making them, occasionally I’ll see them on market place
Going through your videos I find your Jumbo joe you place the thermometer on the vent, but in the WGA you place it on the side of the lid. How do you feel about putting the meter on the top vent for the WGA. or what is your thoughts and experience in both cases ?.
Nice video mate, I placed my thermometer in the same spot & I feel it's not accurate enough, I'll try another one in the same spot before I drill more holes, did you have a similar result??
Thanks for this Tom. Quick question and bearing in mind that I'm not mechanically inclined: it's hard to see how the vents are reattached. Can you explain the order of attachment. Is it from top to bottom : bolt -vent covers to the top of the grill lid. Then underside is washer - washer lock - wing nut?
Thanks Gus! It’s all in stock at my local Ace, hopefully yours has it. I didn’t size anything, started by rage file handles, picked what I thought would work and did the same with the hanger bolts, it’s really personal preference
Love these ideas, Tom. I have two questions - when you drill into the top of the grill, is there a concern about rust developing there where the metal is bare? I'd like to keep the profile of the Weber Go Anywhere Grill as low as possible - perhaps I can just make the adjustments to the daisy wheels and, instead of adding tool handles, use a stick. I know, sounds so cave-like compared to those nice handles!
Love teh thermometer idea but the ones i buy have a longer stem and before i install im worried itll go too far in and either touch meat or cause me to lose area 😢
BrianHarrisNI ok try Amazon, do they have that there Grill Mark is the name of the manufacture if you can't get it on Amazon then I would say that unfortunately it's not available. Good Luck!
