Let's get down to the real issue here, what this means and debating the pros and cons. No messing around. My new Thai news edbate show covers news stories in Thailand, this episode looking at legal cannabis, the question of whether there are too many weed shops and the pros of cons that look at health, image, tourism from your feedback. Legal weed is now big business in Thailand with many shops, trucks and stalls all over, but there are still some technicalities so the law is not straight forward. Wwe’ll be looking at the good, the bad, the possiblities and everything else.

Good topic Pat. I spent a month in Bangkok last November and I didn’t see anyone freaking out, any more than normal, compared to prior trips, so I don’t see any problem. I did smell it in a few bars and frankly the aroma is far better than cigs. I’ve never attempted weed, but just because it’s available doesn’t mean I’m excited to try it. For those that get relief for medical problems, weed is better than a bunch of pills from pharmaceutical companies. A key factor is prohibiting use in public; what people do behind closed doors is up to them. Bill

Weed is already available in Laos (especially Vang vieng), Cambodia (Happy pizza in Sihanoukville) and any cigarette ladies in the streets of Vietnam. The good thing is that now you have quality weed instead of outdoor crap like in those countries I've mentioned before. I personally prefer a stoner than an aggressive drunk aussie tourist at anytime!

I tried smoking a little in Pattaya, but it killed my lungs and made me sick. I tried a cookie, and a couple of hours later, I was stumbling across the street to get some dinner. A whole cookie was too strong. Now I buy a cookie, break it in half, and eat it at about 8 pm. After it kicks in, I sleep like a baby; without it, I toss and turn all night.

I was in Thailand in the early 1980s, before Khao San Road was a thing (if was a thing, I never heard it mentioned). Soi Ngam Duphli was the backpack area, cannabis, opium and heroin were freely available. Also up Chiang Mai (Golden Triangle), pretty much the same. Fields of opium poppies. no organic coffee shops. :-) Also a lot of guns and 'influencal people'. I spoke to people who could remember opium dens in Chinatown in Bangkok in the 1960s. Thailand was a different country back then. Thailand has definitely moved towards being more of a Western European 'nanny state'.

One thing to keep in mind is when something is illegal, the novelty of trying it and the challenge of getting away with doing an illegal thing is high. Once the same thing is made legal, where is the novelty and challenge? So, legalizing weed can be a good thing because the number of people seeking the novelty and challenge is reduced immediately, therefore the number of first time users will naturally be reduced. I, for one, smoked weed during my high school and university years, but have not touched it for many years since. Now that I am older, I am considering using it again for it's health benefits as age does take its toll. What better place to get it for these reasons than Thailand?

In order to make this as smooth as possible the Government has to do the following: Keep the stuff away from children, Keep hard drugs out of this. Do not allow "Superweed" like "Skunk" as they are known to cause problems. Do not allow large commercial companies with more than 10 employees. The advantage is huge: Farmers can make a lot of money, and the government can earn a lot of tax money.

This makes me think of the weed usage in Phnom Penh. I went from Bangkok to Phnom Penh, Cambodia after I became injured and the had bars that sold loose weed and joints and the whole atmosphere was so much more chill and less frantic than Bangkok.

@@topgammar3763 this was several years ago when weed was not legal in either place but weed was heavily tolerated in Phnom Penh(but not Bangkok). And as far as I last knew, they cracked down in Phnom Penh and closed the two great "weed bars", sadly.

I like the comment about "market forces will affect the supply and demand", or something similar, and as long as politicians and activists stay out of the people's lives only providing the systems in place to protect the citizenry (police, fire, armed forces, health and safety, etc;), it will all take care of itself because no place will stay in business long if it doesn't provide a good product at a fair price.

I am amazed at the number of stores open in Pathum Thani Lam Luk Ka area. It is great for Thais and foreigners to have access to quality medicine now. I lived in Northern CA when medical and then recreational were introduced. I imagine we will see stores come and go in Thailand as this new industry matures. I am super happy to see prices dropping in the shops around me as more good locally grown กัญชา becomes available.

Everyone's opinion is valuable to this kind of issue mate. My point is that it needs to be regulated and it should come with warnings that it's not as harmless as people think, especially for those tempted to try it for the first time. It's not everyones cup of tea.

I'm an old hippie. Lived in SF 1966 & 67. I live in WA State now We've had legal medical MJ since 1998 and recreational since 2012. I'm glad it is available and legal. It is a horrible tragedy to lock people up for pot. Personally, it did not change my use. I use it maybe once or twice a month . . . might go for three or four months without. Edibles are regulated with measured doses.

A con that was not mentioned, was OH&S. The operation of motor vehicles and machinery under the influence of cannabis is an important issue. In Australia, there are drug and alcohol testing on road users on a daily basis by police. Industrial and mining sites also have regular drug and alcohol testing prior to entering the sites.

Weed is fine it doesn't take you onto harder drugs plus I'd say it's less harmful than alcohol. I worked at Substance Misuse services in London for many years before I moved to Bangkok. I had many clients who died from alcohol abuse . Obviously different types of weed and debate around mental health as some people use Skunk to mask it.

Great video! I’m also from California and of two minds about the weed thing, Now that it’s settled down back home, it’s great for my friends who consume: city people can order for delivery, country people can grow their own. But the cartels didn’t just go away, the part before and beside the dispensary is still unregulated, semi-legal, and often violent. I think many Thais who dislike legalization are legitimately worried about the likelihood of corruption and organized crime increasing. I’m curious to see how the issue will play in the elections.

I absolutely agree that there are way too many marijuana shops. That said, I do believe there’s a lot of benefit in marijuana, especially as an alternative to cigarettes, alcohol, and other nasty substances. Edibles can be very strong, and I usually only eat a small piece of one. I enjoy them, but I can definitely see where some people would not. If you are stoned out of your mind, I strongly recommend the film “Sita Sings the Blues” (viewable in its entirety on RU-vid.) Enjoy!

I think most shops try to sell exotic high THC Buds for huge Prices, A lot Cheaper in Melbourne. A few places have local buds for reasonable prices but it was cheaper before. Good that it is legal but agree there should be more guidance and warnings.. I remember going to a skunk trance Laser Nightclub in London in 1994. Amazing and the skunk was strong. Racehorse Spliffs. Someone in your video said weed stores popped up all over the place in California, but then the number dropped to meet actual demand. I live in New York City, in the Lower East Side. There are 4 weed stores within 50 yards of my home. I know the same thing is going to happen here. Most of the stores popping up around the city are going to go bust. I actually feel bad for all the people who took out bank loans to open the stores. Me? I stopped smoking pot a long time ago, because it was fun for a while, then it just started making me paranoid. I hear people say "Oh that's because of the quality" or "You should take this oil" etc. Honestly, it's not that important to me. It was fun but I went on with my life and I don't need to think about it.

If you know Thailand, you know the major health hazard in society is Moonshine (Lao Kaow) Moonshine causes cancer (stomach, liver and more). Cannabis use is a great way to restore sore muscles at the end of a day of hard labor. And weed has NO HANGOVER, so you can go to work in the morning with no pain. P.S. My neighbor died this month trying to drive to work while still drunk from the night before. If he had smoked pot instead, his child would still have a father.

I remember 'skunk' arriving in London. It was a big moment! Unfortunately 4 of my mates ended up in a Chelsea mental hospital due to Psychosis caused by the stronger weed. And we smokers are still in denial lol. There's a reason 'American weed' was class A, and hash/weed was class B. I think 'newbies' will probably struggle with it first time round. But beware the psychosis caused by the stronger stuff (see: Canadian and American voters lol). And 'bad people' come to Thailand, due to being able to sexually exploit poverty-stricken girls (a result of their culture). There are a lot of foreigners with mental illness here too. Weed smokers tend to not have toxic personality disorders.

I’m not sure if someone sitting on their sofa in the UK (chilling 😉)or anywhere that requires getting on a plane would go just for the weed. Tourists who like a joint will lit up in the party hotspots . From what Iv seen in the local area where I stay it’s mostly local youngsters that seem to be enjoying it. Like most new things there is a boom now. However I can’t see all the cafes staying open like coffee shops etc there can only be so many of them at once . excellent ending with the thumbs up 👍 Pat 😂

Eating it is the way to go for me, slow onset and longer effect, very good to manage my back pain, but you got to have your dosage right, it's kinda annoying when you have to cancel what ever plans you have because you're to lifted, or when you realize you ate all the food in your house and are considering to put mustard on the last vanilla ice cream just because that's what's left xD

Phuket is even more expensive. try 800-1000 baht per gram for the top shelf. In terms of the Harm Scale - which takes into account Physical harm on the individual, and social harm on society such as violence, alcohol is number 1. Cigarettes in number 2. The problem is all the little pop up stalls on the side of the road which are unregulated.

Good luck to those from Singapore who hope to get their cannabis fix while in BKK. They'll be arrested once they touch down in SG, which has laws against consumption even when overseas. Even national sportsmen are not exempt!

Been smoking cannabis even before it was legalized in Thailand. Compared to hard drugs like meth and yaba, cannabis is the less you should be concern of. I support the legalization of cannabis.

i myself as a tourist spent about 1000 AUD on weed in bangkok over xmas, plus the many 1000's spent on restraunts, hotels, taxi's etc... cant imagine we offended anyone during that time plus all the support we gave the economy, surley a no brainer as a positive for the people of thailand...

What makes you think that someone selling grass isn't signposting or dealing Ice,Smack,Coke or Crack? Thailand ,Laos,Malaysia,Cambodia etc. ferry these things on a global scale. The only reason cannabis was called a gateway drug was because when it’s illegal you have to cross the line of illegality to buy it - which takes you into the world of criminality and dealing with people who deal with REAL drugs! By Thailand making it legal it’s no longer a ‘gateway’ to the darkside! ;)

Personally I have never been a user but I find the whole discussion fascinating. Yes there are pro's and con's but history has shown that there's no point making it illegal so at least put some form of regulation in place and allow people to use safely. Eventually it will be legal in Australia where I am from so looking at how Thailand handles this.

I'm glad it's legal too because I thought there was something wrong with my weed. It made me cough and didn't really have a smell. Until I realized it was just different terpene profile. Spicy. Different from a bag of lemon smell.

Thailand is the most liberal country in SE Asia yet they can be conservative in other aspects of their culture. Regardless of availability of weed, its up to you the invidual. And there is a short phrase in thai - gaw laew taak, its up to you . Thanks Pat for your upload

Sad the Thai political “officials” didn’t write up laws / guidelines for selling “weed”. But this is typical in Thai thinking- don’t collaborate with everyone involved and ask the “what ifs” before introducing a new government decision. Recreational weed that could have been zoned and regulated ( like alcohol is) will most likely be banned after elections are over this spring. Medical weed will be allowed.

Yeah you dont know the does in hash cookies or brownies bought both in Nimbin in Sydney Australia and durring lunch time got hungry ate 1 cookie and 2 brownies 45mins lattter was dribbling in la la land for hours tripping. What I did not know was take 1 wait 1 hr for it to kick in before taking another.
