What you said about persistent loneliness really resonated with me. What's been helping me has been looking into attachment theory. I came to learn that I'm a "dismissive avoidant" due to having to be super independent since childhood, and it makes me really emotionally closed off so it's hard to form close relationships. Even though I'm also bubbly and friendly, people usually perceive me as intimidating and uninterested because I'm afraid of them getting too close. If anyone reading this feels like they've also just been a bit of a loner since childhood, I'd recommend reading up about this!

I relate so much to both the professional part being a surgery resident and also personal feelings of loneliness and it being kind of a reoccurring theme of my life. I feel for you completely. One thing that has helped enormously was having just one session with a therapist (which I plan on continuing). Nothing on the outside really changed but just sharing with another human how I feel took a giant weight of my chest. So if you are able to I highly suggest it. All the best, good luck in you training and hope you find the support you deserve. And thank you for awesome real videos xx

I'm a new grad nurse in the ICU (working nights) and I am struggling. It seems like the support you docs have for each other is great! I have not had the same experience in nursing. You are expected to be a martyr and not take care of yourself because only patient satisfaction matters and it's all treated like a business with the managers breathing down our necks constantly. I was so exhausted one night that instead of eating during lunch I just wanted to sleep. So I gave handoff report to another nurse for my patients and went to take a nap. A resident saw me napping and reported it to my nursing manager. I had to make a written statement and it's being investigated. It's absolutely ridiculous and I'm regretting the decision to go into nursing SO badly. I'm burnt out after 8 months and have no energy to even take care of my own health. I'm not sure what the way out is but I'm praying I find the right path. Thank you for being real as always, America

America, I just want to say that I think you are literally one of the most strongest people I know. I can tell that opening up isn't the easiest thing for you, and you said it yourself since you were a kid, but I want to point out that deep breath of relief that you took after telling us all of that. This is a huge step for you and I'm so proud! When you were talking about isolation, you pointed at yourself with your finger and said "if it's my fault" and I just want to tell you that it is not your fault and you are not the one to blame, even if you feel like it. It's not your fault you followed you heart and picked a career where you save peoples lives, and now you have to work nights for a little, it's not your fault there's a pandemic and the world is shutdown and it really isn't your fault your away from friends and family. America, you know this and see this more than anyone, but sometimes the world is just cruel. You are doing a job that fights against that cruel everyday. I can see the pain in your eyes and honestly, I just want you to please look in the mirror everyday and tell yourself that 1. You are BEAUTIFUL no matter if you have eye circles or anything! 2. You are worthy of love and happiness and 3. You are allowed to feel your feelings. I just want to thank you again for opening up with us, and I really encourage you to do so again because it's refreshing and nice like you said, and I want to see more sighs of relief! I love you so much, truly. I wish I could bring you hot meals during your shifts but I live in Canada. I am sending you so much love. xx

It's a good reality for her to show. A lot of med school and residency vloggers are overly energetic and purposefully keep everything positive, but it's just not reality. It's especially not reality when not only are you working in the most critical area of the hospital for the first time ever but you're switching from nights to days all of a sudden. I'm not sure it ever gets "better" while you're in med school and residency (esp not in a pandemic) tbh, but it's all one big learning process and period of growth, preparing you for a very tough field to work in. Being a doctor takes so much out of you, it IS your life and it's very hard physically and emotionally no matter how many years you've worked. You might get more used to it, find better ways to cope and take care of yourself. I believe general surgery statistically has the worst reputation for mental health struggles, suicides even, amongst residents. It's a very serious topic for residence that I feel like doesn't get talked about enough so I love that she shows this reality.

Intern year is the worst I think. Residency itself is hard though. So it gets worse and then get better. I think pre-med students should definitely stop choosing Medicine based on Grey's Anatomy or any other medical TV show. The reality is completely different from TV shows, and being a doc is not that fancy esp if you choose IM or GS (the real deal). I honestly think it is very stressful & serious job. Also pretty repetitive, so not really exciting either. Choose Derm (but Derm is the MOST competitive field - guess why) if you want a fancy life (I am not saying it is not going to be boring but at least you make lots of money with more work and life balance)

America, you are not the only one struggling with this. I relate to you so much. As a kid, I was always the "weird" one. I moved around a lot, so I was always the new kid, which didn't help. I didn't have many friends because the kids didn't like me, and the ones who did befriend me would bully me too. I also don't have siblings, so I was alone all the time. I had hella imaginary friends tho lol. As an adult, I have grown to really like my own company, so being alone is mostly by choice. I feel like it is a double-edged sword because it has kept me focused and away from codependent relationships, drama, and crappy men. It's really peaceful, but it does get lonely sometimes because I have like 2ish friends. Although I can talk to anyone, I find it difficult to build deeper relationships because I didn't really develop that skill. Part of it is a defense mechanism because people have disappointed me so much, so it's hard to open up. I also feel like I'm annoying to people, so I tend to stay to myself. I'm not sure if this part will ever get better or if I'm gonna end up alone with 10 cats, and I'm not even sure what point I'm trying to make here. I just wanted to share my experience with you because I feel like we have a lot in common. Thank you for sharing your experience. Starting this conversation will help so many people who feel the same way. Much love

35 yo doc over here, I enjoy watching America because I can truly relate to past experiences. Not trying to be negative, but it will get a little worse before it gets better. Medicine does absorbs a big part of your life and many times you will be wondering if you made the right decisions, specially when many of your friends start to have families and you barely have time to keep your plants alive. But the most important thing that many people outside of medicine won’t understand is that it truly is a calling. In spite of all the hardships, it truly is worth it, when a patient sees you in the eye and you can feel their gratitude for all you have done, none of your sacrifices really matter. Cheer up America! I promise, it will get better eventually, and the juice will be worth the squeeze. My dating life was nonexistent during most of my residency, but found the love of my life in the end! You go girl!

Dear America. just the other day I've had a chat with my mom (to whom I moved back in due to Covid and virtual work& school) and I openly acknowledged that I live in a city, heck even a country, where I don't know people and I am hyper isolating myself. She then reminded me that a) only I can do something about that but also b) if you are ambitious and you want to achieve great things, grow and improve, you will spend a lot of time with yourself studying, working, moving - that will automatically affect how much you are around other people. Don't be hard on yourself. These times right now are all but helpful for you to be social (aside from all the work& testing and recovering) due to covid and the restriction. You will find your balance and you will get social if that is what you want but you are more than allowed to be OK all alone. Others are too btw, they may just pretend or not share it openly. Keep your head up girl!

I'm a resident and I completely relate to the long standing loneliness and the struggle to keep it real. What you're doing through your channel is so important,by making yourself vulnerable, you are letting us know that it's OK to be real and embrace imperfections. On the whole, having a supportive residency community is vital to keeping our spirits intact. I hope the governing bodies deal with residents with the kindness and respect we deserve.

I love just how real you're, I was just reading posts of doctors sharing their thoughts about Med fluencers and yeah, it's pretty overwhelming the feeling that some times you don't know what to do and it has nothing to do about how much you study, how much you know about a topic. Thank you for sharing this America 💜❤️
