Weekend Reading Update - July 2, 2023 

Hi Micah, love your channel :) I’m a fairly new subscriber (few months) but I just wanted to say, it’s great to see someone the same age as me reading the variety that you do; it’s encouraging honestly. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’ve prompted me to start ‘We, the drowned’ !

Post when you can but don’t worry about it. Had I not begun chewing on Solzhenitsyn these days I would join you with _Decameron._ Have fun with it.

I'm sold on Proulx. I'm probably going to start with Barkskins. But I'm all about character-focused stories. Sounds like she does that well. Just started East of Eden, and is my first Steinbeck read. Only about 30 pages in, but really into it so far. The writing is gorgeous

Annie proulx really sounds tempting now. However, I am not familiar with much about America. The problems of the West and such. Will I be able to enjoy these stories or do you suggest reading up some other books or sites on these issues and the lives of people there? Oh and yay! The wager. So excited for your detailed video on it. The Decameron also sounds great! A few stories by people who were isolated and away. Such a cozy idea. I'm currently reading the Way we live now by Trollope and I will definitely give the Decameron a shot once I'm done. Do show us the copy of your translation of the same once you get it. 😊

Welcome back after your long two week absence, does Booktube seem different after such a long absence? Annie Proulx started her writing career very late, in her late 50s, I have only read The Shipping News by her.

As that annoying, pedantic, nitpicky Russophile, I'm obliged to point out that the actual pronunciation of Romanov is Rah-MAHN-aff. As I mentioned in my fairly recent video on Russian pronunciation, names, and transliteration, the letter O is pronounced like a long A when it's unaccented. The Decameron has been one of my favoritest books since I first read it in December 2002. I've mentioned it, quoted it, and used lines taken from it in so many of my own books. I've also done a lot of blog posts on the book, and I know my two favorite stories almost by heart. My favorite translation is by Mark Musa and Peter Bondanella, since it restores all Boccaccio's dirty puns, double entendres, and earthy language. I've been saying since I began adding content again in September 2021 that I want to do a series of at least 105 videos on the book, but at the rate my channel is growing (or rather failing to grow), I don't think it would be worth all that time and effort until I have more comments on every single video and I've shed my outsider status in this community.

Micah: Am not a reader of history sorry to say. But did really enjoyThe Wager. Your videos are always interesting. So keep them coming. Read Annie Prouilx stories have Bark skins but it's a chunkster. You are so well spoken and so smart and so young. Great job. Love the eyebrows. TQM
