This is what a cover should be. When someone performs it exactly how the original sounds, there's nothing new, but when something like this comes around, it's a fresh perspective of the same great song. I love Weezer and Green Day.

I absolutely love the original, it holds a special place in my heart from when I was a teen, but this cover (that I've only just happened upon as of the moments it has taken me to complete this comment, is fantastic. I would never (probably naively so) have thought anyone, let alone Weezer, would cover Brainstew.

They both are great in their own ways. The original Green Day version showed more of Billie's anger with his insomnia, while Rivers' version shows more of the mood swings from sadness to anger in the song.

Rivers singing Green Day in his striped pajamas is probably the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen.

I like it, it injects the song with an optimistic sadness that the original didn't have. Like as if the character is pulling an all nighter to get a crucial school or work assignment done and once they turn it in they can come home and surrender to the sweet release of sleep. Green Day's original arrangement is frantic, in the way that it feels like the character is being torchured in some way. Which makes sense because if I remember correctly the song was inspired by Billie Joe going sleepless while caring for a newborn baby. From the way that Rivers is dancing around I'm amusing that he's imagining the original arrangement in his mind. Either that or he's trying to be a T-Rex.
