Founding guitarist Jason Cropper wrote the intro part to my name is Jonas. Unfortunately Brian Bell didn't play on the blue album. All guitars where tracked by Rivers after Jason left the band. Brian did however lay down backing vocals on the record.

I learned this album by ear from a teenager and over the years got it down more and more perfectly playing along with it, and it's gratifying to see I was correct on most it. But the jonas triad climb always stumped me. This record is so magical and I really owe a lot to it as it made me a lot smarter and sparked ways to keep inspiring myself and sort of programmed me to always think what more can I do with a set of chords..

Love Pinkerton, but nothing tops The Blue Album. That whole album rocks so much. The dual guitar solos at the end of Only in Dreams is perfection.
@Safetysweet

Right on man, fantastic album. I could listen to Blue start to finish and never get tired of it. Love Pinkerton too but there’s that special Weezer magic on Blue, and part of it is Ric Ocaesak’s stellar production and Rivers’s songwriting. Just the fact that he went back and did all the guitars by himself after Jason left just blows me away. Perfectly made record, certainly their most iconic.
@nickl2854

Great Insight into Weezer Guitar , a lot of guitar players don’t realize how great and complex a lot of Weezer Songs are ... The Cool Chord Progression in “Smile” with Diminished / Augmented ? Chords and Cool Voice Leading Chords used in Jazz ... and Rivers Use of Octaves is Great ... In “ Holiday” he mostly uses just octaves in the chorus of the song ..: Rivers is just an Amazing Talent !!
@HubLocationSound
@HubLocationSound Год назад
One of Weezer's most unique techniques is their harmonized staggered octaves. Good examples are during the bridge/buildup of My Name is Jonas and the buildup after the solo of Why Bother? Both guitars play harmonized octaves but one guitar moves on the downbeat and the other changes on the backbeat which creates a cool cascading feeling as the harmonies constantly pivot as they weave together upward.

I would refer to the intro/main melody for "No one else" as using "double stop power chords" or "triad power chords". I say this because chords like that are used extensively in emo rock to create hard driving melodies. It's basically double stops or triads for the low strings, with distortion added, using intervals to create the melody. Very common in emo.

One thing I noticed that seemed incorrect was, in “Say It Ain’t So” in the chorus, the last chord is the low E version of the chord, not the barre at 7-9 It gives it much more of a thud and a driving impact. You can hear it on the studio version clearly.
