Massive thanks waft in the direction of Elliot for supplying this beauty - / @theretrofuture
It's the Doctor! Y'know, the one with the scarf who everyone over the age of 35 thinks of when Doctor Who is mentioned. (I think he's pretty much the only classic Doctor shown in the USA, thinking about it.)
ANYWAY. His most famous foes are the Daleks, essentially horrible space maniacs in personal armoured vehicles that have a sink plunger for an arm. And back in 1997, you could buy one that contained an entire playset! Even though the Fourth Doctor hadn't been in the show since 1981! And the show had actually been cancelled 8 years prior! Further proof, if it be needed, that time means little to a Time Lord.

The Doctor would have given it to Davros, but Davros forgot to say "Please". Whilst Doctor Who was cancelled it was a massively unpopular decision based mostly on Michael Grade simply not liking the show sighting poor writing and lower budget as a reason, it retained a cult following through fam clubs, magazines and later the internet with fans demanding its return. Yeah if I'm correct Michael Grade didn't cancel it in 1989, I think he was controller when it had it's infamous 18 month hiatus after Colin Bakers first season, as he disliked the quality of the show. And all the stories written to that point for Colin's second year were all scrapped and when it came back was the season long The Trial Of A Time Lord. And then after that he fired Colin Baker. So he did plenty towards it's end but did not actually end it in 1989

Stu, you have no idea how lucky you are that you can just find this stuff in charity shops and things in the UK cause here in America, stuff like this is pretty much impossible to find because of how few people in the states would have actually bought it when it came out. We still only very rarely get new Doctor Who toys over here. The Tom Baker era was extremely popular with PBS stations in the US, to the point that for years I assumed he was the only one. I think it was sometime in the 90s they finally aired other Doctors on the local station. The 2005 series was sort of unclear on being a sequel or a reboot, until the Tennant era finally confirmed it was a sequel by showing past Doctors. They also confirmed the US-produced Fox TV movie is canon(the "half human" thing from that movie was apparently explained in one of the later novels, somehow), with the extra War Doctor version in between him & Eccleston. The Daleks also appeared in that one live-action Looney Tunes movie shortly before the reboot in a brief cameo. And they appeared in the Lego Batman movie too when Joker gains a bunch of help from the phantom zone, as Lego still held the license from Dimensions. Oh and the Cushing movies ARE canon... just not how you'd think. One of the tie-in novels reveled that Peter Cushing had been a good friend with one of the past Doctors who had told him a lot of stories. Cushing made those movies based on them, so they exist in-universe. I believe a poster for one of them also shows up in an episode very briefly. And the whole "timeless child" thing recently didn't really retcon canon as they'd set that up back in the 4th Doctor era, "Brain Of Morbius" with the various previous faces he'd had & the implication that Hartnell was the first of them to call himself "the Doctor". It was the 6th Doctor era that reconned THAT with the 12 regeneration limit rule. Yeah, Who canon has sort of a mess that was made up[ as new writers went along, not helped either by the BBC's tape-wiping policy making a lot of older episodes hard to even watch. Big Finish stuff, the comic books & novels also further confuse things as they sometimes retcon or ignore(the 6th to 7th regeneration was completely redone in Big Finish).

The 1997 date makes sense. The TV movie with Paul McGann aired in 1996. While it was a flop in the US it was a ratings hit here and the BBC realised that while a return to TV wasnt viable it still made a bucket load of money for them in merchandising.
@TheWho87
@TheWho87 9 месяцев назад
Even though 89-06 are considered the "dead" years of Doctor Who the fandom was still going, the BBC rerun stories on BBC2 from 1991-1994, BBC Video was putting out the classic stories on videos up until 2003, and then the DVD's started in 1999. Along with this oddity, there was also a trading card game that came out around the same time. Talking about odd 90's toylines, what would make a fun video if you could find them would be the toys for the many Gerry Anderson series released in the 90's.

Doctor Who wasn't off the air entirely after it's cancellation in 1989. The movie starring Paul Mcgann as the 8th Doctor was screened in the UK on 27 May 1996. There was a brief cameo of the Daleks at the beginning (all be it only voices). Maybe the manufacturer thought it would be a good idea to release this Dalek toy not long after the movie in an attempt to keep the Doctor Who brand fresh in the minds of the fans. Much like the comic books, novels and various other merchandise did. I find this set is very interesting, first you have the outer case painted in the grey base colour with Black Sense Globes (Bumps). These Daleks first appeared in 1972 in the Jon Pertwee story "Day Of The Daleks" and they would subsequently appear in other stories including both Tom Baker Stories "Genesis Of The Daleks (1975)" and "Destiny Of The Daleks (1979)" Then you have a miniature Silver and Black Dalek which featured in another Jon Pertwee Story " Death To The Daleks " in 1974. The doctor who figure is the 4th Doctor Tom Baker (or in this case Doctor Elvis) which kind off makes sense considering the colouring of the outer case. But then you have Davros who did first appear in the Tom Baker era however in this set he is inside the Dalek emporer casing which didn't feature until the Sylvester McCoy story "Remembrance Of The Daleks " in 1988. The Emporer Dalek casing is also the wrong colour, it is in fact white and Gold but it does look good in all silver in any case. This set is a very curious mix of era's but it is a nice item all the same.

I had one the Spider-Man ones of these when I was a wee lassie (now long since gone to a charity shop), but I could never find this one! CORRECTION: I think I have the little Dalek in a box somewhere! Still missing the rest of the bloody thing though.

I can't believe I am correctly Ashens on british pop culture - but it was Bertie Bassett, not Billy :) There was consternation between the BBC and Bassetts at the time - but instead of suing USA-Style, there was a gentlemen's agreement for the Kandyman never to appear again. Which wasn't hard as the show was canceled about 5 serials later.

I can't believe it took me so long of hearing the name Davros like some sort of exotic villainous name, before I realized, watching "The Magician's Apprentice", that it's just a slight corruption of a quite normal hyphenated name, Dave-Ross.

Fun fact, Moffat was going to include a poster of the Dalek movies into 'Day of the Doctor' where it would have explained that in universe the films were made after he'd told some of his adventures to Peter Cushing. However it obviously didn't happen in the final product lol.

Peter Cushing played Doctor Who in a movie? That certainly makes sense. He would have been a pretty good Doctor.
@SolomonFactor
@SolomonFactor 9 месяцев назад
not the doctor, but a separate character called literally doctor who. As in that's his name. It was a weird spin-off to cash in the daleks popularity and I suppose they didn't want to alienate any viewers with the already established characters

@@SolomonFactorJust because Peter Cushing played a “character literally named Doctor Who” doesn’t mean that he’s “not the Doctor.” He’s meant to be the Doctor of those movies. He was essentially playing an alternate version of William Hartnell’s Doctor. The movies did have the already established characters, just different portrayals of them. Saying that “they didn’t want to alienate viewers with the already established characters” doesn’t make sense, as not having those characters is far more likely to alienate viewers, especially considering that the movies are adaptations of Doctor Who stories that had been shown on TV.

I don't recall the exact yeat, but around 1997 is when they released that Dr. Who TV movie. The one where at the very beginning the last Doctor from the original run dies and regenerates as a new doctor that was only around for the movie. Then 10-ish years later we got the new series. If the timing is correct, these might very well have been a tie in to that movie. My long scarf is at the cleaners.

I seem to remember that they sometimes showed repeats of old series of Dr Who on BBC2 after it was cancelled, and I think they sold VHS's and stuff, so there were probably a few kids who got into it that way. They might also have thought that there were enough obsessive Whovians that would potentially buy it as a Birthday present for their kids/ nephews/ nieces/ etc whether the kids wanted it or not to justify paying for a license that was going cheap.

it is the singular "dimension" for TARDIS, as its not like a ship, the door to the TARDIS is like a portal to a pocket dimension, so all TARDIS interiors are their own dimensions.
