I remember watching a Game Chasers episode featuring the guy responsible for Action 52. I think they actually went over to his place. He sounded very proud of that cartridge.
Predator sticks out of the NES library? The same library that included Alien 3, Rambo, Dirty Harry, Die Hard, Platoon, Robocop 1-2-3, The Terminator 1-2, Total Recall, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and more? :P Lots of cartoons & games based on R-rated movies back then.
This was my thought too. These films and games were frankly attractive to the young boys who dominated the game market at the time. I myself, despite being in a strict, religious family, remember being exposed to a lot of those things. I agree with the other comment that says Platoon is the weirdest of the bunch. That's a rather dark, serious Oliver Stone film and not quite the mainstream 80s action/horror film like the rest. Also, while not directly weird because its based on a cartoon: Toxic Crusaders. I mean, they made kids cartoon and game out of a Troma B-movie with gory violence and nudity, etc. Probably flew under the radar of a lot of parents who had never heard of the original.
Monster Party had to be one of the craziest strange games. I used to play it with my siblings and they loved it even though it was so gruesomely weird.
When I was 3-4 yeas old I was staying at my dads and I would wake up before dad was awake at like 5 or 6 in the morning and go put predator the vhs on and watch it till my dad got up. It was my favourite movie. Thats one of my earliest memories.
I actually LOVE Taboo, but I come as a Tarot card user for decades, so I have a lot to base my criticism on. .Definitely NOT a "game", but incredibly interesting for what it actually is. The interpretations are...ok...but could maybe be a little better.
I love how more than half of these games more games that AVGN reviewed in classic episodes the decade ago even as far as a decade and a half ago with Wally bear on the no gang. I'm surprised you didn't mention Master chew and the drunkard who. 😂
what the hell is the situation with color a dinosaur? it’s going to be several years before jeremy parish gets to it in nesworks but goddamn I really wanna know the backstory there. like think of all the effort that went into programming & designing the game, getting the license from nintendo, manufacturing boxes & circuit boards & plastic cases, all for a worse version of a 25¢ coloring book. is it some sort of bizarre 5th dimensional money laundering scheme? like for every other bad game I at least get why they made it & thought it would sell. for color a dinosaur I have no clue
ok looking past the stuff like Platoon and Hudson Hawk and other R rated movies that got a NES game for some reason, the strangest game to exist on the NES imo is Gilligan's Island. The question I always ask when this game is mentioned is "Who was this made for?" Adults who watched it in the 60sas kids weren't gonna go out and get a Nintento b/c of this game and kids who were playing the NES weren't going to want a NES game based on tv show from the 60s. The game came out in 1990 and the show ended in 1967. 23 years between the game and the show ending, strange idea.
Well, as a kid I enjoyed watching it in syndication, along with a bunch of other classic shows like The Addams Family. Must have been plenty of people like me.
@@lo1bo2 and I understand people would enjoy watching it in syndication back in the 80s/90s but was there really anyone who was asking for a game based on Gillian's island? lol I dont think the game itself is bad, I just think it's a weird choice to make a game out of. I remember a buddy of mine had it when he lived down the street from me and it wasn't bad, just odd.
At least there was a cartoon called Gilligan’s Planet or something, and the game is still kind of generic. I think weirder was the game based on the three stooges, as it wasn’t that clear how to play it, and had references to black and white era episodes. Now that’s obscure.
The reason that non-game software never really took off on the NES was because of the price range. A Tarot card simulator is something that had a market, but you would have expected it to be selling on the PC for about what Nintendo charged third-party sellers for a cartridge. Taboo is fun if you can find it at a yard sale for a few bucks, but I wonder if anyone who paid full price for it felt satisfied.
Predator makes more sense than any of the games based upon Nick at Night shows. I remember being at the rental store wondering why there were games based around The Three Stooges and Gilligan’s Island. Heck, Fester’s Quest came out two years before the Addams Family movie and fifteen years after their appearance on New Scooby Doo Mysteries.
Somehow Chiller was one of the cabinets in the waiting area at the batting cages in River Edge, NJ in the late 80s. Would literally be on the bottom of the list of games to have at an establishment frequented 90% by kids.
I picked up a 4him - the ride CD from a flea market a few years after the first marathon. I always meant to send it in but never got around to it. I wonder if the cd is still at my house somewhere 🤔
Pat, no kid would want “Predator?” What are you talking about? It was like the forbidden fruit of Nintendo gaming! We loved the bad licensed games from R-rated movies that we couldn’t legally watch. You got to pretend you were older. I’d have put “Predator” along with “Total Recall.”
Has Pat ever mentioned what type of gamebox plastic covers he uses? I want to buy some for SNES games but they always have negative reviews for being the wrong size or breaking easily.
I hope one day you guys will fold NES homebrews into your already large rotation of interesting retro video gaming topics. There is so much amazing work being done on the NES in this decade that I feel like your viewers would love an occasional discussion of the best of what is out there.
When I was a kid I hated manuals and all the paper bits that come with games. I never really threw them away (unless I threw the box away). I just didn’t have the patience to open and close it carefully each time I wanted to play each game. That was one of the reasons I welcomed Nintendo going clamshell from GameCube and DS onwards although DS cases sometimes held manuals poorly, resulting in damage
I remember playing a game where I think you just skateboard to the right while avoiding obstacles - not saying it's a weird game but was hoping someone could possibly tell Mr what game it was
T and C surf design or something like that. Each time you beat the level you restarted with a longer level and had to beat it in a certain amount of time.
King's Quest V - like, who the hell thought they could squeeze that game onto an NES cart, with no mouse, worse controls, fewer colors, lower resolution and worse audio. Ambitious but a complete waste of time.
Not sure if people have ever heard of these NES games that I have played but are actually good (though very difficult) Airfortress and Gunnac. I rented them as a kid and I still play them as Roms, and they are pretty good, especially Gunnac. It is a bonkers game but an amazing shmup.
The way he describes Wally bear in the no gang kind of sounds like me when I play Operation secret Storm it's a bad game it plays bad everything about it is just bad but yet I want to play it and see if I can get to the third level I think I've never gotten past the second level terrible game but always had me hooked
Come on guys!!! The 80’s were way less sensitive!! I was born in 83 and I watched everything from chucky to die hard. Either your parents didn’t care or they were religious freaks! It seemed like no in between lol
The NES was pure blinking GARBAGE....the SMS was WAYYY better at the time...oh and the colors SUCKED..the only games worth playing on the NES were the black box games but the rest were pure garbage
