I wish somebody had mentioned that in the US most people drink coffee. So our version of a kettle would probably be a coffee maker, which boils the water. Yes, we Americans drink tea, but not near as much as coffee.

the flags everywhere part is only a thing some people do religiously. its not even half of the people in the USA. some people think their patriotism is shown by absurdly wearing it, even though they arent always the best people in terms of neighbors or community.

As an american who went to primary school in New Zealand for a bit, I really enjoyed singing the national anthem every monday during the weekly assemblies. I was surprised we didn't do that in the US, considering how much we say the pledge of allegience. As for the date format, this is mostly speculation but I believe in british english they call it THE 8th OF September (for example, THE day OF month), where as americans shortened it to September 8th.. we cut out the extra words. I know this was very popular in letters and dates on important papers. So shorthand writing became commonplace.

What I do know is that the English speaking countries converted to Celsius in the 60s at their own rates. For example, I know that Canada converted to centigrade from Fahrenheit in 1968, and the metric system was officially adopted in 1972

The Pledge of Allegiance is deeply ingrained in the American psyche as is putting your hand over your heart during the national anthem, so much so that many Americans just do it out of instinct when the national anthem plays. The pledge was adopted after the Civil War, I think, and the national anthem is a patriotic song adopted during the Great Depression that refers way back to the British war (Part 2 ;-) in 1812 against Britain's former American colonies, and now it's just a common thing Americans do without really knowing why. It's certainly not anything like that "German thing" of the 1930s or like China's enforced Communist pledge, as Americans do it voluntarily and some don't at all or even kneel in protest to America's policies.

On the date format, its quite simple. In North American English, when you say a full date, you would say "June 22nd 2024". Thus "mm-dd-yyyy" is the format equivalent. When you talk about a future date thats in the same year, many people will say "The meeting is on the 9th of September". Latin based languages always give the date of the month, then the month.

Canada mixes its units of measurements. Officially, its metric - temperature in Celcius, distance in kilometers, gas in litres. Many people, however, will measure their own weight in pounds, will measure room dimensions in feet and inches, the entire building trade is in imperial units, and we commonly use SAE tools (1/2", 5/8", 1/4", etc) along with metric tools. In school, you are taught strictly in metric, unless you are in the trades, in which case, measurements, tooling, and standard materials sizing is imperial. Americans get thrown off when getting gas in Canada. I tell them just multiply the price by 4 and thats the price per gallon. I then have to assure them "yes, we pay that much for gas"!

1:43 in Canada, the Canadian flag, is only in every classroom of a public school (JK-Grade 8) or elementary school (JK-5) or a Senior Elementary School (6-8 usually) But in high school/secondary school only in the gym. But not even that is consistent. Of course, like most countries you will see the flagpole outside of the school, sometimes with the territorial/provincial flag next to the national flag 2:09 but in any school *_O Canada_* will play over the PA system before announcements, and then class starts. Usually little kindergartners will sing. It may be because their teachers told them to, but some people don’t. Otherwise you are supposed to remain silent and still if you’re in the hallways. Unless you want to sing the hymn. People *_might_* look at you Funny if you put your hand over your heart, unless it’s a staff member they wouldn’t care about that. Or there are a lot of patriotic kids in this school. Between Junior kindergarten and grade 8, you would face the flag, but you wouldn’t put your palm on your chest. No one would’ve told you to do that. No one is stopping you, but.. no one is thinking it

We learn to drive at such a young age because all except a few cities in the US have actual good public transportation. And even services like uber are incredibly expensive and not really feasible for the average person. Also why would you walk 20 minutes when you already have a car and could get to the place you need to be in 5 minutes...?
@somersault4762
@somersault4762 10 месяцев назад
You could take as well a bike. Americans even use the car if it was a five minute walk. Or instead to walk from one shop to the shop right next to it, Americans go to the parked car and drive to the parking slot of the other shop. In fact this needs more time then just walk. With all these drive-ins people are not used any more to leave their car. I think in your first sentence you meant bad transportation not good.. Therefore it totally makes sense to learn driving cars at a younger age. Overall this is just another little thing why lots US people have a problem with overweight.

@@somersault4762 A bike cannot go the same speed a car can. And it depends on the person, but most people I know would not bother getting in the car again if their next destination is next door. Also, I meant what I said, you just misread what I wrote. I said that public transportation is not good with the exception of a few cities. Yes it is a major problem, but the solution is also major because our country is massive. It will take billions upon billions of dollars to add subway stations across the US. I guess it's just a cultural thing. People in the US go to the gym as well. I think overall the bike lanes are better in Europe and more safe. In the Netherlands they have more bikes than people. It's a really good point the British representative makes about not singing or knowing the national anthem. In recent years there's been a rush of angry nationalism, but I'm quite sure that 90% of those spouting this crap and waving flags don't know the words past the first or second line, because nobody sings it. It's just there. The truth is that British patriotism has always relied on deeds rather than flags or a song. I was brought up to think that flag waving was an embarrassing thing Americans and French people did and that we only brought them out on rare occasions (if then) because WE KNOW WHO WE ARE and don't need to remind ourselves*. I'm disgusted at people claiming to represent me betraying our culture (again) and trying to make us a clone of the US (again). Hypocrites! As British as George Washington! *This is a rough quote of American Stan Lee's classic line 'We don't need names; we know who we are', just to show I'm not bashing Americans!

I never really had to do the national anthem at school in the Netherlands. I always find these videos so weird cause I'm left wondering where in the US the American is from. Cause like I'm from the northeast in a suburban area and my answers would be so different. The backwards date thing we actually got from England FOREVER ago, and when they changed theirs to the day first we didn't. Dunno why. No idea why everyone has such big vehicles. Cause MURICA or something dumb like that. I personally don't see the need for a huge truck unless you build stuff or transport furniture frequently, but I also drive a little sedan, so I'm not the best authority on that 😅We do drive a lot of places, though, unless you live in a city, even if walking is convenient. American flags really only appear for 4th of July and at the houses of uber conservatives (and even then usually only in the country). We did say the pledge in elementary/middle school, but not in high school. But also not every classroom has a flag. At least in most of the schools I went to (we moved a lot, so 6 by the time I graduated high school) I think there was 1 that actually had a flag, and the teacher brought that in cause they taught American History in that classroom throughout the day. There were flags in the auditorium and outside the building. They broadcast the pledge over the loudspeaker during homeroom and everyone was supposed to say it together. We also weren't really in trouble if we didn't do it, either. In colleges there were no classroom flags, either, and of course you didn't do the pledge there. As an adult you really only see a flag at like a school or city hall/court. Some retail places will also fly them, though that's always struck me as weird. Portion sizes are big. I always wind up bringing half my meal home. But also, you don't HAVE to upsize if it's an option. Farenheit and other measurements are like the dates. We brought them over from Europe and just never changed when the world moved onto more logical systems. The large gaps are AWFUL. I hate it and always have. It makes zero sense at restaurants/schools/etc. In retail stores I think it has to do with theft? But I honestly don't see how it would help. Pharmacies are a catch all here. You have snacks, books, toys, medicine, cosmetics, etc. It really is for everything except the groceries, though our grocery stores often have pharmacies in them as well, and you can get much of the rest of this stuff at the grocery store. Usually pharmacies are used for if you need one or two items so it will be really quick to run through a smaller store. I know just as many people who use the microwave/teapot/electric kettle. Like it's all common here. I grew up with a mix of using the microwave (for one cup) or teapot for more than one cup. As for microwaving everything, that's also a very household to household basis. Mine was broken for 2 years before I bothered to fix it. I heat up my leftovers in the microwave at work, but at home I primarily use the oven if I'm not in a rush. I also don't know many people who cook their dinner and such in a microwave. It's really just a fast place to reheat things. But again, it's all household/region/etc specific. The US is over 9 million square kilometers (over 3 million sq miles). and made up of so many different cultures, so it's hard to generalize any behavior.
@Savannah-
@Savannah- 10 месяцев назад
About the flag thing, I think it's probably region specific like you said. I grew up in the south but not the deep south, I grew up in a Democrat leaning beach city in Florida. But regardless in any neighborhood you'll find houses with flags outside, Im not surprised when a house has a built in flag pole. I'm actually surprised your classrooms didn't have flags, Almost every one I can remember had a flag, at least a mini flag. They're on lots of boats and cars around here, too. The pledge felt very mandatory for me, nobody ever stayed sitting. I wouldn't say the words but still had to stand. Someone in a class of mine got told off by a teacher for disrespecting veterans by not standing. There's definitely big differences in different parts of the US, especially between the south and north, the US is also such a big place. Even when you're not in a conservative area in the south these things are just part of the culture we grow up with.

The date as mm/dd/YYY is because when you archive, you do it by year. So, the year is the least important on the document itself. When you peruse the document to find the right one, it's easier to look up the month then the day. European date format dd/mm/yyyy isn't that good because you need to look at the second number. Iso date format yyy-mm-dd would be the best, but if your files are in a cabinet by year, having the year first would just be noise. So, the American date format was the best to be used for archives. Now, with digital, it looks weird, and even American Millenials don't know the reason ^^

Most American schools don’t do the Pledge of Allegiance any more and it was just in elementary school when they did. I also had to sing “America is Beautiful” song when I was young, but my kids never did. Also, most grocery stores have pharmacies in them, too. And we do walk 😂😂😂

America was on the winning side of the two world wars and then went on to be the winner of the cold war, so it makes sense that Americans would fly that flag everywhere 😂
