As much as we love Pc gaming, it may not be all it's cracked up to be.. and you may not even realize what you're giving up for those sweet frames. might even be why games aren't as fun as they used to be. As someone who has decades of pc gaming experience I walk you through some of the issues that can make gaming less fun. As much as I love it, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Well, there's quite a bit of rainbows i take that back.
Ever feel like despite the better hardware and accessories pc gaming just feels like it's missing a bit of the magic it used to have? There may be some valid reasons behind it all. And I think I found a few of the key components to this question. Over the years our computers have been our window into the outside world as we're constantly connected and online to every distraction that could possibly derail our focus and attention away from something we rather engage with instead. That's exactly what we're covering here.

My experience being a pc gamer and console gamer: 70% trying to optimise games and get them running nicely (unless it’s a Ubisoft or capcom game they all run like garbage on every pc I’ve had) and 30% me finally getting to play it

For me it's like 10% optimization. Because I don't play games as soon as they get released (I wait like 2 months) and if the game is stuttering I update everything on my PC, delete junk files and clean my computer from the inside. Games tend to work after that...

This is all so on point and something I've been thinking a lot about lately. I love PC gaming, but I work all day at home on the same PC and make art on it as well. "Relaxing" on the same thing in the same room in the same chair can be incredibly difficult. The space/activity association is very strong and having a designated space for certain things is how we can compartmentalize as humans. Problem is, when we have 1 device that can do many things, it creates this...I dunno, internal friction between what we want to do and our mindset because of where we're doing it. The couch means warmth, relaxation, entertainment, stories. The office chair means work, obligation, creation and connection. It's no wonder they breed different gaming moods.

After so many years, I was finally able to get my first ever pc only to myself, i gotta say, im loving it so far. dont get me wrong, my nostalgia will always be my ps2 and ps3, but due to technical failures and not being able to find the necessary components that i need to enjoy them, i just leave them as memories. and when i had my ps4, needing to buy ps plus to get new online experiences from that console, i was really disapointed. but now, i can finally enjoy some good old tf2 on desk, and since majority of my friends are on the pc, it was a no brainer for me to get a pc myself. while it may not be able to overcome the amazing memories i have on the older consoles, i am still happy with what i have, and i hope my pc will come to a long way. your videos are amazing btw, manley, well edited and very entertaining while informative. thank you for your content!

I have a similar story. So I mostly played xbox 360/one for minecraft, also on a low end laptop. But I got tired of xbox services shutting down everyday, lack of mod support, hard to host dedicated servers, couldn't play with mouse and keyboard easily. I finally got a gaming pc in 2020 that I played minecraft on and now I stick with tf2 these days. Most of my friends were moving to pc as well so it was a win-win for me in general. It also got me into gaming more. Ark was way easier to run too and I could properly play multiplayer with friends.

This is why steam link is underrated as heck. Basically turns my PC into a living room console, and all I need is just a device that can run it connected to the same network as my house via ethernet. No idea why they stopped producing those things.
@ManleyReviews
@ManleyReviews 2 года назад
I'm surprised it's not more popular. Low latency PC compatibility with a tv over ethernet i would think would solve so many issues. but for now, i'll have to keep guessing which HDMI input my laptop is on. I swear it always magically moves.

@MonstobLee
@MonstobLee 2 года назад
my setup is desk with monitor and chair on right, tv and couch on the left, pc in the middle so it can reach both hdmi cables, both hooked up with surround sound, got a ps4 controller and razer turret to choose from depending on the game, as well as wireless headset if i dont want surround speakers. all this so i can effertlessly switch between desk or couch when i want.
@WMan37
@WMan37 2 года назад
@@ManleyReviews Well, if you connect your laptop to a TV, and log into steam on both your desktop and your laptop, you can use your laptop as a makeshift steam link. I typically do this cause my living room where the couch is and stuff is not the same location where my PC is. As long as you have a good enough router, it's basically almost indistinguishable from native play.
@tc2241
@tc2241 2 года назад
+10 for steam link! Allows my wife and I to chill on our couch and just game. It’s also gotten much, much better as more developers program with it in mind. That said, I’ve got a big ass Ethernet cable to keep latency low😬

My only biggest issue with PC gaming is cost I've only recently been able to upgrade and run games like re8 Village (barely). Sure, Linux breaks more often, but fixing a broken install on Linux feels much more fun than on Windows. On Linux it's about 50% searching the net and 50% messing around with configuration, on Windows it's 95% searching the web and 5% giving up. And the great thing about Linux is as long as you don't touch anything, it will never break, so when the developers push a patch that causes constant crashes on your 15 yo machine, you can spend this time trying to launch a game on blaming the developers for ruining your install.

Honestly, the Arch Wiki is 50,000,000 times more useful than anything Windows help related. This video encapsulates about how I used to feel about single player games on PC perfectly. I'm mainly only a competitive multiplayer gamer and only finished around less than a dozen single player games on PC and many left to be unfinished in the past decade, I could rarely appreciate those type of games. I never knew why it felt like such a drag to play a campaign game or why emulating ps2 and nds didn't feel that fun, until I bought a controller and a nice chair! Being able to longue adds so much to the gaming experience in contrast to trying to get immersed while sitting with posture that's painfully poor or rigidly uniform with KB & mouse. I felt like a kid again playing ps2 lying in a hammock or nds in bed! Guys if your phone is strong enouvh to emulate games I highly recommend buying a controller mount to attach your phone to it!

Funny thing, the exact opposite happened to me, I used to play mostly mmos and low graphics multiplayer games on my cheap laptop until I got my first gaming laptop, a high end 1070 monster at the time, that was when I started seriously playing single player adventure games and honestly being able to crank their graphics to the max felt great and the experience was the best ever. Even now I'm still using that same laptop and having a serious blast on many single player games and have completely ditched pvp games altogether, and I play on both couch and desk, my switch is just gathering dust next to the tv. Best thing I bought yet was the steam link, leaving the pc at the desk and playing on the tv without having to carry the rig has nullified my need for dedicated consoles. I've never _ever_ had a game crash on me (Edit: I should clarify I don't play many current gen games, none of the AAA shooters, and I've only been using PC for less than a year now, like eight months), and the only time I had issues with a game to the point where I had to go all tech support was trying to get LA Noire to work, because the PC port is trash. But, like, I have to boot up Splitgate two or three times for my controller configuration to properly load. I can't play anything with an Xbox account at my college (at least online) because the school wifi blocks the game from connecting. I have to enable a VPN if I wanna play offline Halo, dammit. It's small things like that. Honestly though, I'm very much willing to put up with that stuff because I know how to get around those quirks. I love the sheer freedom PC has, for better or worse. I enjoy using my Steam Controller and having to remap controls in Steam Input while I'm playing, I know my way around and the controller configuration I end up with is usually excellent. I can have gyro aim in any game I want. Others see it as tedious, I see it as having the freedom to change things and create an experience tailored for me specifically. I get that not everyone feels the same way, I've tried to get some of my friends to convert to PC to no avail, but I don't think I could ever go back to console after using PC. TL;DR I definitely don't think PC is as complicated as some will make it out to be, I've almost never had issues getting a game to run, but PC definitely has its little quirks. I never really notice since I know my way around and how to fix those little quirks. I like having the freedom PC offers, for better or worse.

you're either full of shit or the luckiest person alive or have actually been playing pc games for less than a year if you're gonna come ANYWHERE with that "i've never ever had a pc game crash on me" that is a load of horse shit unless you are in 1 of those 3 categories i just listed lol hate consoles but get outta here with that blatant lie, even most of the triple A titles launch with crashes now

@@zeening less than a year, yeah it's that one. I also don't play many current games, none of the new AAA shooters. (I'll add that disclaimer to my original comment.) I still don't think it's as big of a problem as people think, yeah it'll happen every once in a while but it's not a regular thing unless you're playing a poorly coded game like Battlefield 2042 or Cyberpunk.
@zeening

@@ericbazinga ahhh yeah that will do it lol, tbh games have gotten ALOT better in recent years, the late 90s-early-mid 2000s were hellish half the time if a game didn't wanna launch out of the box or they released it with bugs and crashes that needed post launch patches (arcanum, multiple fallout games etc)& nah it is def not THAT bad i think the vid creator was more just meme'ing on the situation/past of pc gaming. honestly the only thing i have had issues with recently is ESO, EVERY time i try to play that garbage after not playing for a few months/year+ i have to fully uninstall manually clean it from my registry from steam's entry and it's own, then reinstall to MAYBE get it to work lol
@ericbazinga
@ericbazinga 2 года назад
@@zeening I was mainly super defensive about crashing cause that's one of the BS reasons console fanboys use to shit on PC. "Consoles are more stable" a stable 30fps with potato graphics, sure. I don't really get their point when crashes happen on console too. They always bitch about driver updates, max out settings even when their rig isn't capable of it, and play glitchy AAA games and act like it's the PC's fault when the game crashes. "it took me like an hour to get into Battlefield 2042, and then it ran like piss, console master race!". If someone prefers console, that's fine. I don't really get it, but you do you. I really do need to get it through to my head that PC is an enthusiast device that not everyone wants to use or can afford. And I had to look up what ESO was, Elder Scrolls Online right? Either way a glitchy Elder Scrolls game sounds about on brand for Bethesda, at least pre-Xbox aquisition Bethesda.
@savagekid94
@savagekid94 2 года назад
I agree, same here, and my PC is considered "high end" I have an i9 10850k and a 3070Ti I run a lot of AAA Single player games. I don't really deal with a lot of crashes or anything. PC problems for me aren't that big a deal. And if a game crashes, it's easier to deal with than console crashes because it's way harder to diagnose on a console if something is wrong with your game or the console.

This video explains exactly how I've felt for the last few years. I've kind of switched back and forth between PC and console gaming several times since I started really getting into gaming like 20 years ago. But the last few years I've had both, and having both for an extended period of time really made me realize that console gaming is just way more enjoyable for pretty much everything except games with lots of keybinds like strategy and MMO games. I'm to the point now where I just have kind of a mid-range gaming laptop for WoW, but almost everything else I just play on an Xbox Series S with SSD expansion and an Xbox Elite v1 controller. I'm fucking tired of playing tech support too. I work in IT... I don't want to have to fix shit for people when I'm not at work.

The one thing i would suggest is having a long HDMI from the PC to TV at all times with a long USB chord with a Blutooth connector. This makes it really easy to use the PC as a console as well. You could also use wireless keyboard/mouse for menuing. But a controller in a couch is what can really get you to chill mode.

I got my old xbox 360 from when I was a kid and set it up again, and immediately wasted 8 straight hours going so hard in the paint on my massive collection of older games. Had a blast and then realized I hadn't done that in a _REALLY_ long time. I game a fair bit on pc, but I hadn't enjoyed it much in awhile, or got so into it that all my anxiety went away. I'd always play a game and turn it off right around the hour mark because I felt guilty for not being more productive, only to then get trapped in a hole of youtube videos. My Steam Link really helped with this. It's shocking how good it is when everything is hardwired in. You can even play newer fighting games like SFV (forget melee, don't even think about it) with the boys and it's a great time. I presume an Nvidia Shield or other comparable android set top box with an ethernet port should be just as good with the Steam Link app. You can even make one with a raspberry pi. Can't recommend it enough. Having the gaming power of your PC in the living room while it's all the way across the house without having to move anything but your controllers is pretty great.

I got to say, a lack of optimization for multi threading has got to be one of the most bothersome things with PCs these days. I do understand that some programs don't make sense to be fully multi threaded because the math they are doing isn't very parallelized, but the amount of performance I can get when a program uses all 12 cores of my CPU is insane when it does work. When I use the concurrent chunk management engine mod in Minecraft, I can go from only being able to handle a render distance 12 to 20 chunks to doing a render distance to 100 chunks. I never thought an Minecraft optimization mod would cause a RAM and VRAM bottleneck.

as a lifelong pc/nintendo boy, something about ps/xbox does entice me. A relatively powerful dedicated gaming machine from the hardware to the firmware and everything else. But the idea of playing with a controller and also the cost of a console when I could just play pc (since I would want to own a pc regardless for literally everything else I want to do) has meant i never bought one. But the controlled ecosystem seems nice. Haven't watched the vid yet, dont exactly know if this is relevant.

If you've been into nintendo, then that's pretty much the experience. I'd even argue that nintendo does it better because they arent focused on trying to 1up every one with realitic graphics. PS and Xbox release the same software PC usually gets, especially Xbox since it's Microsoft. But with PlayStation, the main reason to play it would be to avoid all the data collection stuff they put into the PC version of their games. And the UI is nice

For the record, PC gaming is no where near as bad as this dude is saying. With regards to PC thread and resource utilization. Developers target low to mid tier specs, which is usually on par with consoles for the day (it maximizes sales). If major studios focused on the absolute high end, Id expect the game to be architected in such a way to saturate all available cores, buses and memory. Btw, Crysis 4 was announced today. Should be interesting to see if Crytek bother with Consoles.

I'm split on the tech support thing. Yes, some games require you to do absurd things to get them to run, but those games are in the minority. For most games it's just a weird quirk here or there like needing to turn off Vsync for it to run properly, which are annoying but not a big deal once you figure it out. The other side of the tech support thing is that you can run your games exactly how you want. Tweaking settings, turning off annoying shit like motion blur, or using external mods to make things look better are all options that I value. I know that consoles are starting to implement different settings options but they are still far off from the granularity of PC. Spot on with the stuff about bluetooth and high core count CPUs. I bought a bluetooth dongle this week so I could use a PS5 controller wirelessly on my PC. No lie, I had to move the dongle from the back of the PC to one of the ports on the front because the connection was bad. 3 feet was just too much to handle, but 2 feet? Now we're talking. Un fucking believable. The couch thing hits home too. I crave the ability to play PC games on the couch, but I've tried it before and it just sucks. Input lag is a big (and as far as I know, mostly unsolvable) issue, but the biggest limiting factor is that my TV is a piece of shit compared to my monitor. No way I'm going to go through all the setup and configuration just to play games at 1080p60 with input lag.
