If they had been renewed, do you think the theme might be the rise of the mega musical, since that seemed to be the defining characteristic of musicals from the 80’s-90’s? Season one they were taking inspiration from musicals of the 40’s-50’s like: Brigadoon, Carousel, Sound of Music, Music Man, and Oklahoma. Season two was darker and grittier reflecting the 60s-70’s era musicals like: Chicago, Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, Pippin, Annie and Hair. So season 3 could take inspiration from Cats, all the Disney productions, especially The Lion King, maybe Rent, but the title possibilities don’t roll off the tongue as well as the first two. Schmats? Schmisney? Schment?
Sometimes I can't sleep at night because I'm afraid that people have missed the moment when he says endings that are tragic and casts a dubious look at a lock of her hair, because it's such a throwaway line.
I watched this with my mom for the first time. After this line, I immediately looked at my mom in disbelief. She was CACKLING. The funniest parts of the series are when people hate on Cecily Strong when she’s literally written to be the most normal woman on the planet.
The Ben Vereen energy Tituss has here is brilliant. He looks and sounds stunning. He's chewing the scenery but at the same time it seems effortless. Sassy, seductive, campy, and sinister. Perfect. It made me nostalgic as hell for when I was in Pippin about a decade ago.
@@marshy_5406 The actor who played Josh, Keegan Michael-Key, said that he actually loves musical theatre in real life, so it was hard for him to act not to enjoy it in back in season 1.

Right? I'm guessing there was a clue to Season 3 in the finale of Season 2 which included the phrase "One more day" in the last song and, well, a chandelier... cannot wait to see how they satirize all the large scale '80s productions like Les Mis and ALW.

@@hopefulstarfish7559 I think the common factor for 1980s-early '90s musicals is not thematic but theatrical: they are all epic "mega musicals" with gigantic, electronic sets (Phantom, Evita, Les Mis, Miss Saigon, Cats, Starlight, City of Angels). I'm not sure what kind of Schmega-musical land will be created, but I don't know if they can combine '80s and '90s, as the mid '90s to 2000s moved away from that pretty drastically, and back to smaller ensemble-focused pieces about culture, relationships and families (Rent, Passion, Avenue Q, Hedwig), a tradition that lasted a long time (Next to Normal, Fun Home, Band's Visit, Spring Awakening). I also think season 3 might have to do with whatever issue Josh and Melissa face next--likely the difficulties of parenthood. For that I'd definitely like to see a parody of Avenue Q, Spring Awakening, and Matilda...but it's probably too soon to go back only a decade or so! I'm also hoping they will parody all the musicals based on animated Disney movies--or perhaps theatrical musicals based on non-musical movies in general, which is also a whole thing...
I think season 3 or 4 will deal with magic of some kind there were a lot of popular fantasy musicals, like wicked (i expect that to be season 4) plus it could help with the lore of whatever schmigadoon actually is like did the leprechaun curse the town or what is the cause of it, plus if they do get a kid it can show them lost imagination that a lot of adults have. i just think it would be interesting i dont know what season 3 might be but 90s and 2000s musicals also started bringing in disney musicals like beauty and the beast, lion king, little mermaid, and aladdin i grew up in that time and i remember my parents taking me to those. I know season 3 will still be dark/realistic cause of phantom of the opera, les mis, cats, and little shop of horrors, but i have a feeling if we get a season 4 it will be more fanciful.
My dream season after this is Into the Woods + Wicked and the main theme is parenting their teenage daughter, since that's what Into the Woods is all about

Pippin is another one of those shows that are so entrenched in the conventions of musical theatre, that trying to convert it to another medium would be likely misguided.
Have you seen Broadway by Ghostlight's Schmigadoon/Schmicago videos? He has an entire series of interviews with Chris Gatelli, where they discuss the choreography influences and Easter eggs. And there's really great behind the scenes footage!
What do you think? We'll be going to 90s and 2000s musicals (bringing a bit more rock to the soundtrack a la Rent and Spring Awakening though 200s would also include Wicked and Hairspray) or we'll be going back to the 20s and 30s (though those are a bit too much like the 40s and 50s musicals though with Fred Astaire instead of Gene Kelly and it kind of goes against their method of going forward in time rather than backwards - unless they're going for the 'complete opposite' line of thinking). Of course the one 70s musical they didn't touch was 'Grease' which of course is has a 70s version of 50s music so it sort of belongs to both genres of musicals we've seen so far!
I'm really hoping for a third season too. It'd be a waste not to. Following the pattern, they'd move on to 80s and 90s musicals. How can we miss out on a chance to see parodies of Les Mis, Phantom, Little Shop of Horrors, Cats, Rent, Miss Saigon, Into the Woods, Ragtime, Aida, Mamma Mia...the list goes on and on. Many of the most iconic musicals come from those years imo. I'll be really disappointed if it isn't made. Of course, I'd love a fourth season with 00-10s musicals too, but I'm already crossing my fingers for a third season lol, I doubt a fourth one is in the cards. But who knows...

Was this the extent of Ariana Debose's performance in the 2nd season--that brief stint as host like in "Cabaret". Did they censor her? Too sizzling? She's the outstanding new talent. She won't be held down for long.
Ariana was only available for three days of filming. That's why she doesn't have as big a role this season. But she has a phenomenal Dreamgirls-esque number in episode 6, where she brings the house down.

That's literally the premise of the show? Josh and Melissa get stuck in a musical. Last season it was golden age (1940s and 50s), musicals like The Music Man, Brigadoon (hence Schmigadoon), Sound of Music etc. this season is 1960s and 70s era musicals: Chicago, Pippin, Sweeney Todd, Cabaret, Jesus Christ Superstar, Sweet Charity, Annie, etc. This number is a pitch perfect sendup of Magic to Do from Pippin.
