Paul Brown is back with some more welding theory for ya! Who knows the effects of having the A/C frequency set lower or higher? Which would be better to prevent burn-through? Which would make a weld more narrow?

Please note: when I am speaking of the heat telegraphing through to the back, it is the protrusion or bump on the back, not the heat discoloration. The higher hertz welds really left no bump, I hope this helps clarify, Thanks for watching, Paul

Shan, sorry for taking so long to get back to you, welding is both a science and an art, you use the left side of your brain for the technology, but the right side for welding.....just like an artist paints....I started out my career to be an artist, but found I liked welding much more......I went to Art School for over 5 years, and we studied nothing but art......it was educating us to become professional artists, designers, painters, sculptors, industrial designers, interior designers, and on and on......get in there and do some welding, it is not easy, but it is not hard either, good close vision and hand eye coordination is what you need, and patience.....you are sewing with molten metal.....good luck on your career, and best wishes, Paul, thanks for commenting and watching....

We've done some 7018 with ac for flat high amps (don't remember the hz). Helped to reduce some substantial undercut.
@ypaulbrown
@ypaulbrown 2 года назад
AC is considered to be better for high amperage use and also if you are a long way from the welder., .....that is the reason we use AC for power transmission.....it also deposits more metal than DC+ and has a less digging arc, that would explain the reduction of undercut....I know those big 3/16 7028 rods love AC....thanks for the comment and for watching, Paul

Wearing comeaux caps is like wearing Timberland work boots…you might buy them as an apprentice, before you know what brands are ACTUALLY good, but after a while it’s American Redwings and custom caps (probably made by a fitters wife and sold on eBay). Just me maybe.
@ypaulbrown
@ypaulbrown 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and commenting M C, I had to stop wearing Redwings because of quality, went to Thorogood and WESCO, bought some Wolverines last year, but one is so different than the other I cannot wear......Redwings always fit well and needed no break in, but so do Thorogood and WESCO, since I am on concrete all the time, the WESCO's were hard on the knees as they have Vibram lugged soles....the Thorogood's and Redwings like and have now are the MOC Toe no heel jobs.....a little better on concrete..... as Far as welding caps, the problem I have had with high dollar ones, [$30.00 or more] is the durability, maybe and availability, in my opinion, and I have a lot, haha....for the money the Comeaux's are the best deal, but then I am not on job sites much anymore and the shop I am in , no one else is there. but me......my friends who do not know I am a weldor always like my hats because they think they are 'Unusual'....cheers, Paul

What lens do you guys have on that hood ? Just picked up the tiger hood and I want a variable shade that fits
@ypaulbrown
@ypaulbrown 2 года назад
Roberto Gutierrez: Opps, I was thinking of another hood I use, but here is the info on both hoods, Paul......that lens is a Variable shade 4x5 ArcOne that has a remote sensetivity control, I bought this last year because of the true color, my partner bought one and I was really impressed with the color rendition, it is very true color....the hood was terrible and I had it deform when I left a few shirts laying on it in my truck.... very flimsy, and my 2 friends who bought one had the same issue, the hood head gear is junk...it will not stay adjusted even after a minute or so.... ..so I had a Tigerhood that I put the lens into, I had to run the remote [2.5x1.75 x1/2 inches] to the bottom of hood on inside . a wire connects and needed no modification. no cutting of hood, no big deal, just used tape to hold in place and wire rests underneath the retaining clip of hood, I originally was going to use the Fibermetal 4x5 vertical [narrow] hood but their was not enough room to clear head gear with the remote at top or bottom... I always wanted a horizontal view anyway.....so it was the Tigerhood that got the nod, pun intended.... it has worked wonderful.....[this is why I bought, because of the large viewing area...and color...BFFVX Light State 3Dark State 5-13Digital Sensitivity Variable Grind Delay YesTIG Rating Amps 5 No. of Sensors 3 Regulation In Viewing Area 17 sq. in. ] I also use the Lincoln 2x4 autodarken for my Tigerhood flip lens hoods.... the color is very accurate....Lincoln Electric 2X4C....I am very pleased with it, I have owned Jackson, Miller, Huntsman and ArcOne Autodark lens since 1996, the ones I am now using are by far the best I have used...... technology has come a long way....The Huntsman AV/L was also great, but it died after 15 years.....and was $389 in 1996... I hope this long winded description helps.... I mentioned the 2x4 flip hoods, I use them when in dark areas so I can flip up to clear view to see and also cramped areas so I do not need to lift hood to see, just the clear lens.....I also allows me to use a cheater to inspect welds and chip/clean slag with out worry of chips in my eyes..... Tigerhoods are tough.....and one of the few that are rated for overhead welding.....most new fancy hoods are not rated for overhead . Cheers, Paul Brown p.s. the ArcOne covers all but a 1/2" strip where sensor is, it is a huge viewing area.....you can see in the video the strip....
@ypaulbrown
@ypaulbrown 2 года назад
Something I did not see while welding and only after seeing the video clip of the machine settings while welding, was the increase in voltage the higher the hertz and the drop in amps at the 360 hertz setting. The machine was set to 90 amps for all welds, which was not clearly pointed out. Arc length stayed pretty consistent, I did have an issue with how fast the rod needed to be feed into the puddle, as I am used to using 1/8" rod and not 3/32", the 3/32" takes a much faster feed rate, that would explain the slightly variable arc length you see......I guess practicing with 3/32" 7018 feed rate is in store for this Weldor Guy, thanks for watching, Paul

@ypaulbrown
@ypaulbrown 2 года назад
Jarrod, you might want to use AC where you need less penetration, more build up, being further away from welding machine as AC current flows better than DC with less voltage drop, using larger electrodes, and being able to change frequencies to change the arc characteristics ..and no arc blow...thanks for watching and commenting....Paul

AC, that's not welding, sounds like a Dire Straits song from 1980's....AC is used a lot more than you think in industry as there are some things like arc blow that does not effect it, larger electrodes work better with it, more build up than DC+, and longer leads can be used for less current drop. thanks for watching and commenting, Paul

Not to sound like a pedantic bore, but WHERE was the theory? WHY did higher frequency oscillation produce less penetration? HOW does it work? WHAT are some specific applications for the various frequency settings and why would you use them? Come on, man! You're hardly quenching our thirst for knowledge here. My curiosity is not satisfied! 🙃
@ypaulbrown
@ypaulbrown 2 года назад
great question Thomas, , I have no idea why the amperage is less [less heat and penetration] at higher frequencies, the arc is more focused at the higher frequency and that causes it to not jump over to close objects, high frequency would be good if you were in a tight area and trying to not arc out on something, Low frequency has a wider arc cone and higher heat input, so thicker material would benefit in a lower powered machine. Using AC also remedies the problem of Arc Blow. AC also has less penetration than DC+ and more build up. add these things up and I am sure you will find a solution to a possible weld problem. the same effects are seen with AC GTAW [TIG] and they definitely help when welding aluminum. Maybe I will do some digging and see if I can understand the actual reason for the effect of high frequency on the arc, I am not a physics or electrical engineer, maybe someone can chime in???? Just an old seat of the pants weldor....trying to discover solutions for problems I do not have.....cheers, Paul Brown
