Coming from Canada and having dealt with rusty junk for most of my life I’d have been more surprised if that engine wasn’t seized. Time to dump some diesel fuel and marvel mystery oil in the cylinders and let it soak. Also you’ve never really lived if you haven’t had to beat the pistons out of a block with a 2x4 lol.

I was just thinking the same thing....here in Pennsylvania, the chances of finding a used engine with so (relatively)little rust is approximately 0.07%. We considered them probably repairable it they they could be more or less torn down without the use of explosives...

Ok a couple of (respectful) comments I hope you take to heart. On the studs that were broken. Maybe try some localized heat on those studs before even trying to loosen them up. Maybe get a small oxyacetylene torch ( and always make sure that there is no residual gasoline when using an open flame.)There is an old adage, heat, beat, repeat that, somewhat crude, will work in most cases. You're going to have to eventually remove the broken pieces and that part is going to be a pain in the ass. Also if you don't already have access to a bead blast cabinet, seriously consider getting one. I promise you will love it once you get it. I mean even harbor freight has them pretty cheap.

@5:15 - My Toyota 2F drank water thru the air cleaner. Rust on a set of copper plugs - cleaned up and still in use. Nothing will stop that engine if it gets clean oil, valve stem seals, and decent spark and air-fuel from a new carb.

You should invest in a decent Inductive bolt heater. You can get a decent system for 300 to 400 bucks, and they usually come with a few extra heating elements in case you wear one out. They can heat a fastener up glowing red in about 15 seconds, and you don't have to bother with having heavy oxy-acetylene tanks or the explosion hazards.
@JB-xg7io
@JB-xg7io Год назад
Great advice! I use a torch all the time on rusty bolts and it definitely works better to break them free than penetrant. I had never heard of one of these but I see Eastwood has one for a little over $100. I may just give it a try.
@robertt9342

Geez for $300-400 I think I’d build my own, $100 seems far more reasonable.

You gotta get a blue wrench! An oxyacetylene torch, it will save a LOT of broken bolts and studs. Do it! It is painful to see all those studs breaking, get the torch! Also, if a nut or bolt will move a little, try reversing direction, more Krioll, then rock the nut.... see what I did there? Rock the nut?

Here's a tip; when you're working on a motor hanging on an engine hoist, lower it onto axle stands. (or at least 1 near the flywheel end [depending on where the thang's C of G is. Its a bit less 'danglyswingy' then.

To help prevent breaking studs, once you loosen a nut, tighten it back down and repeat for all other studs until they're all broken free, then remove them all. The manifolds warp like a paint flake peeling up as you relieve the hold down stress from the bolts so tightening down the bolts you just broke free will keep the manifold from adding extra stress on the next bolt.
@Biggja22
@Biggja22 Год назад
You gotta praise Toyota for that rust bucket to still release the amount of bolts it did. However they did it. Just plain quality right there

Sarah, get yourself a heavy steel bench that's thirty inches off the floor to set things like that engine on to work on them. Working on the floor all bent over, and working on engines swinging all over is going to hurt your back permanently. A person thinks they can get away with that when they are in their twenties, but it's damage to your back that builds up, which you can't recover from.
