Wow. Thank you so much. I've been trying to learn Transcendental Meditation for quite a while, and as a college student, I just don't have the 1000$ to spend on going to a TM center. This really helped me, thank you.

Thanks so much! :) I have done a course of Vipasanna meditation before, so it felt very similar to Anapana( focusing on breath). Both the breath and the mantra were acting as anchors for me.

Had you bothered to learn TM, you. would have access to every TM center in teh world for the rest of your life to ask these questions rather than hope that some random guy on youtube will get back to you aster than 3 years (and counting).

Personally, I find that the more I don’t want to do TM, the more effective it ends up being. In this way, it cultivates detachment and equanimity. This stops the mind from being able to pull you around, making it a servant and not a master. Well, that’s my theory about what this technique is doing.

That’s very interesting, Swinny. I wonder if detachment is one of those things that makes meditation (and most things) a better experience. Thanks for your insights!

This seems similar to mindfulness breath meditation, except using a mantra instead of breath as the object of meditation. Could you explain the other differences, if any?
@Shupra94
@Shupra94 Год назад
Here - the mantra isn't used as a object or focus point. The mantra is faintly observed as a thought and given no extra attention to. The idea is focusing on something keeps your mind on the surface level, we want to dive deeper past the surface, lightly attaching our awareness to the mantra as a submarine.

can anybody tell me what to do with eaches, restless body, nervous legd, and jurking limbs durin meditation?

Let all of those sensations become part of the background, like the sound of cars outside or the feeling of a chair on your butt. If your mind begins to focus on the discomfort, let the "focusing" become part of the background as well. But always return to your mantra. Listen to it in your mind over and over. If you notice your mind wondering again, just gently return to your mantra. If you are thinking "I am terrible at meditating," this is also your mind wondering and is completely unnecessary. Just gently return to your mantra.

If you are new to meditation, exercise caution. There are many well documented and well understood meditation techniques. What the lecturer is describing may lead to some success, there is a good amount of misinformation in this though as well. What he is effectively teaching you to create is what is called a "meditation object", and through that, he is sort of describing how to get to what is called Samatha or "calm abiding". At most, this will help you to calm your mind, which is certainly very valuable. However, there are many reputable and free teachings on meditation that will take you further. This will basically get your foot in the door, but will not help you take off your wet clothes. I would recommend looking into guided meditations on the app Insight Timer. It is free and has a huge library of experienced teachers that can help.

This pisses me off. all of you “meditation gurus” say do this…. no don’t do that, no this ways better. it’s literally like your trying to piss us off and be contradictory

@@Music-wl2bj agree! Although getting pissed at flamin' galahs is not worth it. Especially ones who mention guided meditations. With an app no less! What a joke. Meditation has been around for thousands of years and predates the harnessing of electricity. Apps? pfft.

@@Music-wl2bj I’m not a meditation guru, but there are plenty out there who pretend to be and this is someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
