WEN 6552T Planer & Repair of Sprocket, Outfeed Roller, and Gearbox

Video shows the repair of my Planer. My WEN 6552T Planer stopped working and I made a series of repairs to finally fix this. I replaced a Sprocket. I replaced the Outfeed Roller. I replaced the Gearbox. It took a few steps to finally get to the root cause. The Planer now works fine. This is a DIY repair and as you will see is a very simple repair.
I also interacted with WEN to order replacement parts and to get WEN Warranty Service. These interactions all went very well so I have only good things to review on that.

Great video, I have this same model. If I ever have the same problem at least I have your video to help me through the repair. Thank You!

For the record, I have a Wen PL1326 and while it may have had an extra step (the outer frame is three pieces rather than one clean shell), replacing the gearbox was essentially the *EXACT* same process. Thank you for this! FYI: Snap ring pliers help for getting those pesky C-rings off.

Bloody brilliant! Exactly what was wrong with my Wen planer. Have ordered new sprockets and will be back up and running the day they arrive. Well done, Sir :-)

Thank you for the video. I had the same problem but WEN would not provide replacement parts. I used it less than 10 times in a year. Will be avoiding WEN products in the future.

I am in the process of repairing mine, Replaced the broken sprocket ran 2 boards and it stopped. The sprocket & chain broke and the out feed roller is seized in the bearing block. I will contact WEN and see what they say. Hard to believe its the gearbox, but stranger things have happened. Thanks for the video.

They said that the problem was in the bushing blocks. They supposedly changed the material they were made from and the problem is now fixed. I'm out of warranty so no help there. After changing the broken sprocket I fired it up. This time it tore the crap out of my unit. Not sure if I want to chance it, both feed rollers, 4 blocks, 2 sprockets and a chain.

glad to have found your video. I had the same problem to happen to me today. My front roller seized up, lucky none of the sprocket broke. Was easy enough to take apart.

Thank You ...I have my Wen torn apart as well thanks to you it's my inbound roller and will now order the parts needed for repair and stop by and get a better pair of snap ring pliers. I pulled my gear box off and removed the two short bolts to take housing cover off and I have no broken gears so hopefully front roller parts will get me going again

Thanks for all the comments. I was just thinking about this purchase. I was only reading the happy buyers. Guess WEN isn’t the prize for the price.

Thanks for making this video. I have the Grizzly G0940 which looks just like your Wen under the hood. My infeed roller wasn't advancing the board and it was stuck in an up position. Grizzly suggested I clean it so I took it apart and did so. But I couldn't figure out how to get it back together with the chains. Your video should help me do that tomorrow!

Thank you. I know how hard it is to find this kind of information. Very helpful. I had the same issue.

7:20 my infeed left side (gearbox side) roller bushing is completely fused and the outfeed left is semi-fused. This of course destroyed one of the outside gears. I also pulled the bear box to inspect and it seems fine. But 2 things: 1. How did you remove your fused bushing blocks? 2. Any tip/trick to putting the roller assembly back because that darn spring? :) Thank you for an incredibly helpful video.

Was thinking of getting a wen planer. But holy moly sounds like note worth a nickel. Wonder if there are any that are in actual use.

Thanks! Having the same problem with my Wen 6550. It appears the infeed roller seized and broke the chain and sprocket.

I hardened mine heat it up to a warm orange and dip it in old used motor oil. If you keep having failures of the same part.

Great video, I have the same issue and this helped to confirm my problem. Both the sprocket and chain broke in my case and it feels like the rear roller is seized. One question. When it broke for you the second time and the boards stopped advancing did you have another broken sprocket or was it just that the main sprocket off the motor stopped spinning?

Thanks glad this helped. For me the real problem was the sprocket, roller seized, and the gear box. It was just each time a made a fix I found there were still other issues.

Has anyone had the chain on the bottom pop off? Any videos to repair that? Used my planer twice and the chain underneath the full planer popped off!
