King Ghidorah of the Showa era came in like a hurricane, but went out like a lamb....he began the era as the most powerful kaiju, and ended up getting killed off by Minilla..... Were there 2 king ghidorahs? The original, a more powerful version, and a 2nd one, less skilled? Includes the Zone fighter King Ghidorah as well.

The 2 ghidorahs theory was taken down easily. It's stated that destroy all monsters takes place in 1999 while the other appearances of ghidorah take place in the 1960s and 70s.

@Weyland Punani It is when you take into account the fact that the exact same guidebook that claims that there were 2 Showa Ghidorahs also claims that DAM takes place the year that it was released (1968), whereas the narration from the japanese version of the movie states that it takes place at the "end of the 20th century" and the english version's narration stating that it takes place in 1999.

Only in the dubs, the actual movie never says that, only that it's "towards the end of the 20th century" which is PHENOMINALLY vague. Props made for the film date it to 1994 but you can't see them clearly in the film itself, unfortunately.

I personally prefer to imagine that there is only one king Ghidorah. It feels more special than if there were multiple Ghidorahs that look the same. I just accept that the reason he looses more easily isn't because he became weaker, but instead because godzilla grew stronger since their first fight. Throughout the showa era godzilla was always helped by other monsters, but by the end, he was the one to save them and even fought two monsters on his own. Plus Ghidorah spent centuries hybernating on Venus. Having to fight so many times in a few years and being controlled by multiple aliens could have weakened him to some degrees.

I always believed that with every time Ghidorah was driven off of earth throughout the Showa era, he would start to get weaker and would start to get careless throughout his appearances and battles, and then in Destroy all Monsters, his recklessness and desperation to win would end up leading to his downfall.

Thanks cause I always pictured as the same Ghidorah, but with every battle lost he gets weaker and desperate for victory. and then Minilla’s smoke ring sealed his fate killing him.
@godzillakingofthemonsters5812
This is objectively incorrect with a gargantuan amount of sources stating otherwise and Godzilla progressively getting stronger and being a better fighter disproves this given at DAM (end of the timeline) he can't beat Ghidorah without help.

I personally like the idea of two Showa King Ghidorahs. I mean we have two generations of Godzilla, two generations of Anguirus, two generations of Rodan, three of Mothra, two of Varan, two of Manda, two of Toho's King Kong, two of Gorosaurus (technically since apparently the one from in DAM is supposedly the same as in King Kong Escapes but I find that hard to believe since it clearly died when Kong broke his jaw), two of Baragon, and technically two Mechagodzillas in the first 15 films alone. So even though a good number of sources say there's only one King Ghidorah in the Showa Era, it shouldn't be implausible to have two King Ghidorahs either. I mean even the roars are altered in Vs. Gigan and Zone Fighter to make it sound more like a cyborg to a degree. Even more so, when Zone Fighter lands punches and kicks on Ghidorah it sounds like metal impacting metal even if it's "metallic" boots and hands hitting organic scales.
@godzillakingofthemonsters5812
There's just too many sources saying there's two of them. To my count it's at least 5. Furthermore, more than one Ghidorah isn't an alien concept to the franchise. Vs King Ghidorah has multiple theories and other media stating Heisei's a clone of a space Ghidorah and a space Ghidorah was meant to appear in the Heisei Godzilla timeline. Desghidorah is also placed into the species. Guides regarding the King Ghidorah from Rebirth of Mothra 3 also imply that there's a "Ghidorah race" but only the strongest and smartest can be called King Ghidorahs.

While I personally as a Ghidorah fan would love to think the weaker Ghidorah showings in the Showa era were a different monster I remember hearing somewhere that the in lore reason for his diminishing power was due to injuries and never being allowed time to fully recover. He went from his original attack on earth and was immediately enslaved by the Xilians then shortly after that the Nebulans, then the Garoga threw him at Zone Fighter, it was only after near repeated beatings he got a break until Destroy All Monsters and in that fight it was him alone vs 9 other monsters even if only half of them contributed due to suit quality. The poor man was just on a downward spiral after facing the big 3.

I never truly bought the idea of 2 King Ghidorahs. I think it's likely just the Toho staff at the time forgetting that DAM takes place after Godzilla vs Gigan and Zone FIghter and wanted to retroactively explain King Ghidorah's perceived lack of strength in the 70's As for King Ghidorah's less impressive performance in Godzilla vs Gigan, I think there are several explanations. For one, Godzilla was way stronger and more skilled at that point. Godzilla seems to do better against foes the more he fights them and it's been confirmed that he trains between movies. For example, Godzilla seems to have much better fighting technique against King Ghidorah in Monster Zero compared to GttHM, using quick strikes and jabs compared to in the previous movie where he mostly attempted to grapple and wrestle with him. By Second, Ghidorah didn't seem to try as hard since this is the only time he had a partner. As the fight went on, it seemed like he was comfortable with letting Gigan and the Godzilla tower do more of the work. Ghidorah never struck me as a monster that particularly liked fighting if he didn't have to. After him and Gigan are no longer under control, he mostly stands around and watches as Gigan deals with Godzilla. The only time we even see him fight at that point was when Anguirus started attacking him. And lastly, Ghidorah and Gigan just didn't get along at the end. For most of the fight, they had Godzilla and Anguirus beat. He only really began to lose when him and Gigan started arguing and Godzilla and Anguirus ganged up on him.

I genuinely do accept that there are two King Ghidorah’s in the Showa era, One from being multiple sources (the stuff you brought up and some other stuff that I have on me) and specifically some material at that regards Godzilla post Showa Mechagodzilla fight saying he’s still unsure about Fighting King Ghidorah by himself despite the fact was able to fight the second gen in Vs Gigan by himself pretty much and later Canonically in the final movie of the Showa era needing 9 other monsters to fight against him. also the fight that in the last episode in which the second generation Ghidorah appeared after the seven fighters defeated him it said that it’s injuries will never recover yet despite that DAM King Ghidorah is perfectly capable of fighting the Earth monster army So ether he recovered or it’s the first generation King Ghidorah in which stuff regarding it say straight up.

Well the concept of different Ghidorahs was explored in the Heisei & Millennium eras with Grand, Death, and Kaiser, so the idea of two similar but different Showa versions is certainly plausible, and would be one way to explain why his threat level did drop, which always bugged me 🫤

In my opinion it’s the original Ghidorah that dies. It appears in the 60s and then reappears in 1999. The second Ghidorah is in Vs Gigan and Zone Fighter, and is still alive.

The theory I hate the most is that Minilla grew up and became the 70s- destroy all monsters Godzilla because that’s not true at all. There is only one Showa Godzilla from 55-destroy all monsters (99) Minilla never grew up and Godzilla is the same in every Showa film. Same goes for ghidorah and Rodan

I think why there is 2 of them is because the kilaaks cloned ghidorah and give him to the nebula aliens which still makes him 1st generation

There's only one Showa King Ghidorah. Other than KG appearing weaker in GvG, I don't know why anyone would claim that there's two Ghidorahs. And KG being weaker can be easily explained away for any number of reasons, including that the Nebula M aliens who were controlling Ghidorah didn't have a good grasp on KG's power, or that GvG didn't care maintaining continuity.

Eh... yeah I don't buy it. Inconsistent power levels in toku movies don't really count as evidence to me. Like if you're really going to say "well idunno seems kinda weak" as your primary point of evidence then you should also be arguing that there were like 8 different Godzillas in that timeline, because his tolerance for various things is constantly bouncing around all over the place, that doesn't really cut it. I WILL say, however, that if you had packaged this alongside the idea that the NES game Monster of Monsters is part of the Showa timeline, THEN I'd buy it. I mean, it is, is the thing, that's the obvious implication and nothing in the game contradicts that other than some weird anachronistic stuff but like it's nothing worse than the continuity issues between the movies. But generally people don't really talk about it in the same breath for reasons I don't really feel like I need to explain. But on its own, GMOM is clearly meant to follow the original series of films, as all of the established world building comes back there. And in that case, we do have a problem, because KG is the final boss of that game. Granted it's not that big of a deal because we already have a well established way of dealing that in the movies, "oh it's a different Ghidorah." But that is honestly kinda lame on its own. But if you try and sweeten the pot a little bit by tying it to the idea that there were two different KG's already in the films. THAT I would be down with. Also... there's nothing "undignified" about how KG died. It took two monsters to chase him off. It took TEN to kill him. TEN. And one of those is GODZILLA. KG is the most baddest of bad asses in the entire universe, that he was ever brought down AT ALL is astonishing in and of itself. Like really, watch the whole movie, dude, Minilla didn't do shit. Although, it was probably the adult DAM Minilla that took down the KG from the video game.

No The first Ghidorah appeared in the 60's and dies in DAM. The second one appeared in three 70's in Gigan and Zone Fighter if you believe in two Ghidorah
