I looked it up and holy fuck lmao😂😂 "In ancient Rome, two men taking an oath of allegiance held each other's testicles, and men held their own testicles as a sign of truthfulness while bearing witness in a public forum. The Romans found a word to describe this practice but didn't invent the practice itself. Other primates had already been doing this for millions of years. Two male baboons who cooperate with each other by forming aggressive alliances against other baboons frequently fondle each other's genitalia. This behavior has nothing to do with sex but it's a social ritual that primatologists call a "greeting." "
@@apollo5063that is true, but both testificari (which is to testify in english) and testiculus (which is testicles in english) derived from the Latin word testis (which is a witness in english). Theodore technically testify is the related to testicles.

Fava beans to be specific, and it is thought he might have had G6PD deficiency, a condition common in Greece, in which people who eat certain foods (like favas) can get anemia or jaundice.
Actually, the genius of Homer is that he NEVER describes Helen. She is the pinnacle of female beauty and by not being described at all, any reader depicts her in their mind as their perceived 10/10.
The Greeks where upcess with beauty the Greeks had to build statues of their gods to look beautiful and they had to build their civilization to mimic beauty. But no matter what European nation you would visit with in the ancient world was upcess with beauty in one or another.
My guess is that beautiful people are happier in comparison so it can affect how they behave. Though many ugly friends of mine are fantastic human beings
Jokes aside, Greek gods and goddesses had their own rules from Greek civilians. This is especially notable in the goddesses, a shining example being Athena. Ancient Athens was arguably one of the most misogynistic societies to date, but the goddess representing war and the military was very intentionally female because she's a goddess, and a female God was on a whole different level than a female human.

sounds like something we shouldnt be doing, huh. way to ostracize somebody over an ancient beauty standard. I'd report that, to be honest. doesnt seem very fair to teens fragile self esteems. the standard of beauty is always changing- what was beautiful in Ancient Greece would've had you burned at the stake during the Salem Witch trials. it's all so trivial 🙄
I have a strong temperament, so I aspire to be responsible, mature, stable and reliable. I don't get why people want to be bad, maybe when young? But when we are immature we should aspire to be better than this.
@jonintrovertedpotato3866 When women say that like "bad boys" they actually mean rebellious, spontaneous, and cool. Not actually a bad person, just someone who doesn't conform. They're actually saying that they want adventure from the norm
@HDTomo Dude, having belly fat doesn't automatically make you "obese." You do realize there are technically several levels to body weight/fat disbursement? Even just going by general vibe on obesity, having belly fat doesn't mean that, either. Back when I was thin (I was for most of my life until having my son), even being 110 lbs into adulthood at 5'5", I STILL had some belly chub and a little muffin top. Body type helps determine that. I've seen woman skinnier than I ever was that had belly fat. It's a female thing and it's natural. I know you were being facetious, but the way you say things can have a negative impact on people.
Also note thst Aphrodite was pretty medium in body fat, not super thin but also not fat. Just so much she would likely be peak fertility (yes that correlates with a certain level of body fat in women)
It's a little annoying to see some comments from women obviously struggling with their weight - celebrating Aphrodite as being overweight. Women with 'some' extra fat would have been found to be "more attractive" because it would indicate status and health: You've got enough money to eat well and not be wasting away from malnutrition.... It's not some kind of "skin deep" beauty standard that completely surpasses superficiality. ..... Thanks for reading my lengthy, and possibly a tad judgy, comment lol 👍
@@VladmirPoopN I for one like a little meat on the bones, even superficially. I think a surprising amount of other guys do too. Women are supposed to have curves and a bit of fat helps 'flesh' that out nicely. Again, we're not talking obesity.
"If you were good looking, you were a good person" I'm sure Narcissus would agree with you, but he's too caught up in his own perfect reflection to reply right now.
Yes, in Ancient Greece, being beautiful was associated with being a good person. There was even a saying about that: being "καλὸς κἀγαθός" (kalos kagathos / kalos kai agathos) meant being "beautiful and virtuous". _Kalos = beautiful,_ like in calli-graphy (beautiful-writing) _Kai = and_ _Agathos = good, virtuous,_ like in the surname "Agatha"
Fine I’ll be the one to ask…..Do….do you have a soul? I mean I don’t remember The Weasleys feeling anything when a dementor was near which affects the soul
The small p3nis thing is incorrect. They depicted them as smaller in art becuase it SYMBOLISED a person overcoming their inner beast and become a higher being. It was a symbol of their intellect controlling their instincts and not the other way around, which is why they are depicted with beards (the sign of the philosopher). Also it's just much more aesthetic in art, imagine if all those beautiful statues had huge dongs, it would look ridiculous and comical
I'd actually prefer a normal penis on a statue, rather than all the men having baby penises. Is it just me? Statues of grown men with baby penises is just so strange.
I think the artist did things the way they wanted no rules or guidelines. Artistic license realism or fantasy whatever they felt inspired to do; no analytical definitions of what was " correct art".
Damn... too bad I wasn't born back then!😂 Being blessed with long wavy strawberry blonde highlights/auburn undertones, blue eyes, and a voluptuous figure wasn't exactly highly desirable back in the late 90's early 2000's when I was young. Thankfully my husband appreciated(s) it now. Funny how things change❤
having the same body type as a lot of the aphrodite statues (and the same as a lot of renaissance paintings) makes me feel a lot better about my body tbh

In Ancient Greece, the small pps in statues were depicted as such so as not to distract the viewer from the focal point, ie the deity in question and/or because it's thought they believed that a longer pp meant the liquid children would have to travel longer and lose their strength and virility whereas smaller pp meant it would be more potent and easy to reach the destination with less distance. These are my favourite theories/possibilities as to why they depicted the male genitals like that. Also, pale skin was sought after bc it was supposed to indicate class and wealth as someone who's pale probably wasn't out working the fields etc.
In statues specifically, the reason was more that marble and stone have very low tensile strength, so if the dudes junk was too big (ie too large and too far from the body) it would inevitably break and fall off.
The ancient Greeks would have liked me then, I'm "plump", I have a belly, my thighs are fat and despite having dark hair I'm paler than a ghost dipped in flour because I burn in the summer 😂😂😂😂👍 plus I have green eyes with brown rings around the centre so that ticks the unique box 👍

Two hypothesis I found talk about avoiding the consequences of a grave form of favism or a superstition that links broad beans and the underworld. So, it is said one day Pythagoras was chased by some men of Crotone who wanted him dead. But as he came across a broad beans field, he refused to cross it, preferring to be taken by his enemies. But this is just one version of his death. Others say he fled, hid and died somewhere else, maybe of starvation or heartache because his friends didn't make it.

thing is, just like in modern times what was considered good looking is not the same as you see in the statues, the art and such you can think of like the fashion industry right now, beauty has kinda remained somewhat similar throughout the ages, physically fit (sign of health) and such things as wide hips ample bust etc. basing what they considered beautiful on their art would be the equivalent of doing the same with modern humans and the fashion industry and their models. not necessarily ugly but like, usually not what people think of when they imagine someone good looking (unless y'know you're one really desperate or way too into following the fashion industry)
Actually, it is, as strange as this sound. As in, try imagining how would "the evolution of 'barbarism to civility'," and vice versa, look like and how would your preferences change?
I'm so glad that people acknowledge that Aphrodite was chubby because they thought it was beautiful back then- I helped myself out of an awful ED when I found out that she was curvy and the goddess of beauty, it gave me a reason to embrace my body and take better care of it!
You better go for a walk and loose some weight. Guys might like you for who you are but your heart won't. Heart attack is one of the biggest cause of death.
Finding out Aphrodite was curvy helped you with erectile dysfunction? Seriously, most guys don't want a bean pole and I don't know why that has been popularized by models. Most guys like a bit of curve and meat on the bone. Just be healthy, whatever your healthy body is.
I just like that the statues of women depicted double chins and tummy fat cuz even though I work out a lot and eat pretty clean and don’t over eat I too have a double chin and a slightly rotund tummy. I also like that their busts are never overly large or small, as I once was insecure over having an average sized bust as well. These statues help with my self esteem greatly. Any time I feel gross and ugly I just remember if I were in Ancient Greece I’d be a hot piece of Greek meat right now 😂
you know, the modern greek people still hold a lot of these features and qualities in high regard! there are a lot of greek and cypriot people in my area, and i’ve had many discussions on their personal opinions of female beauty and “peak physical attributes”, and i can safely say every single person said they prefer a more “well rounded and womanly” figure, as opposed to what other western cultures think is “a la mode” at the time, because it depicts tip top physical health and a higher likelihood to survive childbirth/have an easier childbirth. now, while it’s almost certainly not every greek person, i’d say it’s a high enough percentage to know that you’re beautiful regardless of what others think about you, and that’s the most important thing 😁 (side note, italians love a curvy gal too, so maybe you can tour the med when you get a chance, if you’re looking to get hit on a lot? 🤣)

It's worth noting that red and gold were interchangeable color terms to the Greeks and there's a lot of examples of gold being described as red. This because the root of red in proto-indo-european originally meant something closer to "shiny" rather than any sort of specific color. Things that were orange, yellow, or red were all regularly described as red since orange and yellow didn't exist as color words yet. There's a very strong possibility that by red they meant blonde hair, since that woudlve been even rarer than actual red hair. They were probably both highly sought after traits but I just wanted to point out that ancient color terms were extremely different from how we use them today. I'm using Dr. Jackson Crawford as my main source on this but there's a lot of other linguists who've talked about this and written their dissertations on it.
