I bought my first "dangley hippie" earrings there when I was twelve years old, which I had to hide from my parents! I still have one of them today, 47 years later.
I'm only 43 years old but I remember Westbury Square. When I was a kid the fountain was still functioning and there were still quite a few stores there. Mom and I would go there a lot and we'd put coins in the fountain, look around Tuesday Morning, go get some cheese at The Cheese Man (I actually remember him - he was really nice!), get chocolate at the Holland Store (I don't remember the exact name) and I even went to the pizza place when I was very little. Also when I was very little I had my birthday party at Rumpelheimers but I don't remember it. They reopened Rumpelheimers briefly in the mid/late 80's so I went then and it was pretty decent. I also went to see a few plays at the The Company Onstage and a lot of kids I went to school with acted in that theater over the years. Such an awesome place, and I could go on and on...but it's just so sad to see it now. They BETTER put something really awesome in it's place and not just more condos!
ALWAYS HEARD ABOUT W.M. BUT NEVER VISITED. DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER VISITING TOWN AND COUNTRY VILLAGE DECADES BEFORE THE T&C MALL WAS BUILT (AND LEVELED)? IT WAS QUAINT TO WALK AROUND AND VISIT PLUS IT HAD A SAKOWITZ STAND ALONE STORE (BEAUTIFUL). SIMPLE EASY GOING YEARS BEFORE THE SUPER MALLS.
I lived just west of Of TC and Farmers Market......went to Westchester High from 72-76. Loved Alfreds deli and ate at James Coney all the time. My HS GF worked at a super x drugs by coney. Seems like there was a grocery store there too....at one time I think it was Weingartens in the late 60's. My mother shopped at Joskes at TC all the time. I liked it better before they built that dumb mall.
REMEMBER JOSKES BEING A STAND ALONE STORE, WATCHED IT BEING BUILT WONDERING HOW MANY BRICKS WILL IT TAKE. WEINGARTENS WAS ADJACENT TO WALGREENS AND SEARS - PRE-MEMORIAL CITY MALL. ATTENDED SPRING WOODS IN THE SAME ERA. I REMEMBER HOU/SPRING BRANCH/MEMORIAL AREA VIVIDLY.
@@gmh101358 Hi, are you still here on RU-vid? Just wanted to comment about Alfred's . . . for several years back then my parents and I would go to Houston every summer for a few Astro's games and one of my best memories is of Alfred's on Stella Link. Omg, I loved that place, especially the deli section at the front with all the cheeses and wines, so elegant! And the dining room was always filled with interesting characters and of course, the food was great. Would you know of anyone who has any photos of the inside?
I went a couple weeks ago myself, if you continue past home depot on Belfort, there a little bit of Westbury Square left behind it. It's in rough shape, but recognizable.
That’s sad! It opened in 1962..... Until about 1971 when, The Galleria was opening.... It was locations choices.... Businesses competition. Currently, it’s half torn down. When it’s sold... All will be gone.
I live in Westbury gardens right across from Westbury square i've heard so many rumors that an H-E-B or a new library was being built on Westbury square so I checked for myself I met with the new owners caretaker which informed me that his boss builds luxury condos I asked him about the shops and he said it was talked about I am also hoping that they bring back the shops and the beautiful fountain it once had with nice condos
Yes! At one point I believe it was called Chicago Pizza. As a teen in the 70s it was THE place to be seen hanging out. I remember foosball showdowns were big in there. I also had one of my highest scoring pinball games in that place. I was just lucky one night and couldn't lose. I drew a massive crowd. What memories!
I went looking for Westbury Square during a weekend visit to Houston. I saw the Home Deport. I didn't find anything faintly resembling the old Westbury Square.
Really are you sure? The for sale sign is still up. I was really hoping that whomever took on that project would preserve some sort of history or at the very least build something more inspiring than luxury condos which are everywhere now. I have so many cooler ideas for that place. I used to go to the neighborhood elementary/middle schools in the 80/90s and even then we would still play our holidays concerts in that square before Home Deport came. In the end whatever they decide to build will build up the area again.
I was being told that an H-E-B or a library was to be built on that site I went to the westbury square site and found the new owners care taker and he told me that condos were going to be built on that site i did ask if shops would be added to site he answered that it was talked about
