This month marks 50 years since Australia’s greatest steam train journey, the Western Endeavour.
On 22 August 1970, locomotives 3801 and 3813 departed Sydney for Perth, on a journey that would become the first crossing of the Australian continent by steam train.
To mark this historic occasion, THNSW has produced this short video featuring members involved in the journey and rarely seen footage from the ABC Archives.

This trip totally needs to happen again once the whole covid-19 crisis has simmered down and we can move between states again, I'd be on board with a trip like that quicker than you can say firebox.

I can still recall being at Seven Hills station as a kid of 4 years old & watching these 2 awesome loco's race past me & my older Brother plus my parents & 2 sisters all of those years ago , I have some pics up on Flickr that my Dad took if anyone is interested in knowing which was taken on some Agfa 35mm film along with some shots of 3801 & 3813 at Lidcombe in 1975 on their last run before going into restoration ; Well done to all involved in 3801's restoration.

I laughed when I saw those kids on top of the coal in the tender, and numerous people on top of a telegraph pole ...I can't ever imagine that being allowed any more.

From two of our grown-up children, who watch the rail museum news, 'Hey Dad, that's you!' (the twit with the goggles). The narrator has the proper cinematic news voice; great to listen to him.

When we can travel between state again it would be great to do the trip again now 3801 has had it major overhaul.

Shes got boiler problem again some of the boiler tubes are leaking thats why the live displays got cancelled on the last couple weekends 😔

@@adriankingston4338 Pardon me for asking, but would leaking boiler tubes be considered a serious problem? Because it would be heartbreaking that 3801 would be out of action for an unknown amount of time, right after it was brought back.

@@FMAChet If the boiler tubes are leaking a full boiler lift will need to be carried out and the tubeplates will need to be removed , Obtaining boiler tubes would be easy, installing them will be hard It is quite a serious problem

@@FMAChet not serious no! dont be too worried the boiler was retubed and these teething problems can happen without warning i have a miniature steam loco and it went through the same little problem when i replaced a couple of tubes in it they at the museum would have to bring out the tube flaring machien again and adress the offending tubes other than that shes in A1 condition after ten years of restoration they did a fantastic job, but being a steam loco these little hurdles come about its quite normal.

We really need some mainline steam in SA again. One day there should be another trip. Its a shame the Garratt couldnt come in 2015

Can you buy 3813 from the Dorigo Steam railway and museum and restore it? To working order?

here are my plans to have this trip as a recreation of it... we restore 3813 go down via melbourne-adelaide-pt augusta-kalgoorlie-perth we bring 3642 along too for the ride (so 3 engines instead of 2 or 1) we have a temporary 4th loco number 3016 going as far as melbourne witha rake of coaches leave the buffers on the locos have parralell runs with other state locos use the exact sign that 3801 and 13 carried on the trip use an NR class diesel to haul us aross the nullarbour and those are my main ideas for a recreation
