@@SuperIvashkovL0V I imagine being a foreigner and learning the language could have had something to do with it. He lists the things that made him realize the dynamic they had settled into. "I learned Korean, I had jobs, etc" so i imagine when they first met, maybe he DIDN'T know korean well, and didn't have a respectable job. So he might have seen some of her condescending attitude toward him as "kind patience" as he was learning. But then after he accomplished those things, she was still seeing him as lesser. The fact that he compares it to white foreigners makes me think he saw her be more respectful toward white foreigners that were in a worse position than him. But he would have to reach that more confident/established position to be able to see the difference.

The story about the Korean girl who stood up and defended the girl with the red curls & her friend on the train really shows that there are still good people who are capable of thinking rationally & acting accordingly. It's a positive thing when a complete stranger can take it upon themselves to stand up for someone else & set an example for others to follow. It'd be great if we as a society can open up to each other, be protective of each other, & speak up when they see something that is not right. 9:15 I love & agree with her message at the end. Sad to hear about Sam. I remember how much Koreans loved him, but when he tries to educate them on why discrimination is wrong they switch and try to cancel him. It's disturbing to say the least. It goes right along with the cookie reference the lady with red curls made. He was an entertainment source for Korean TV, but when he doesn't laugh with them for mocking his race they toss him out like old news.💔

As a Korean (who lived in the states), I had very complicated feelings about what happened to Sam. First of all, as shocking as this may sound, the general public in Korea at that time didn't know that blackface was considered a racist act. Blackface is seen as an offensive act due to how it was used historically to belittle black people in the US (by the white people), but many Koreans didn't know. Koreans feel offended when they see the Japanese rising sun flag but many people who do not know the history use it as a decoration, and I'm sure there are many people who still do not know about this. We all assume people would know and be more considerate about what offends us culturally but it is impossible to know everthing from the start. It would have been nice if Sam had used a softer tone when telling the high school students that it's not appropiate and is considered offensive to the black community. The biggest part to why the Korean community got heated was how he wrote his angry thoughts in only English and called out the racism in Korea when he himself had times when he made ignorant and racist comments towards Koreans in the past. I really hate racism as a past victim, but we should try explaining to eachother what offends us and not resort to anger right away. I was called names and children made slit eye gestures when I was in the states when I was little, but I don't think all these acts were the result of pure hatred or animosity. There weren't many asians where I lived so I'm sure they didn't know better. We just need to communicate better.

@kda-2672

Racial remarks made by some people were clearly wrong, and there is no doubt about that. But there were a few reasons sam was criticized by the majority of the korean netizens.
@kda-2672
@kda-2672 3 года назад
First, when sam openly made racial jestures in the past, the general public just laughed and went over it because they understood that it was not meant to be racist. NOBODY criticized him for that. sam harshly and openly criticizing A few immature highschool students for doing blackface seemed hypocritic to many people.
@kda-2672
@kda-2672 3 года назад
Second, the ghanan dancers, who were the people the students tried to dress up as, openly approved of the students makeup. Sam aggressively attacking the students when the dancers themselves said it was okay confused many koreans
@kda-2672
@kda-2672 3 года назад
Third, korea is a EXTREMELY PRIVACY- SENSITIVE country. Koreans don't "openly share someone else's picture" publicly even if that "someone" is a criminal. Sam publicly posting the private info of the students on sns clearly crossed the line. Finally, his manner of addressing the problem was overly aggressive. The students didn't intend to offend black people. They just tried to recreate a meme. Their intentions were obvious. I agree that it still was inappropriate, but sam didn't have to openly criticize them. As a celebrity and a sensible adult, he could have personaly informed them of the problem. Many koreans were offended and flabbergasted by sam's attitude.

As a black KPOP fan, I see a lot of fans talk abt how they want to move to Korea and stuff like that and they seem dead set on it and it kinda scares me because a lot of poc KPOP fans I don’t think understand how important it is to research and learn abt not only the cultural aspect of Korea but also the diverse and social aspect in terms of foreigners. I feel like since most KPOP fans are like minors and stuff it really scares me that one day they may just decide that Korea is for them and take off only having knowledge abt Korea from KPOP and kdramas instead of actual reality. Now I know that Korea is a pretty safe place but as a poc, it may be even harder to get by there and I feel like it’s important for poc fans to understand. You know, these kinds of people always exist around the world. Please don't generalize all south Koreans are like that. There are definitely people who are more aware of these things. Just like she mentioned, as a foreigner u can represent all foreigners (since there are so few), and one angry reaction (even if justified), can have a negative affect on Koreans mindset of foreigners. The editor of this video really wanted a specific, convenient narrative right? (making black people in Korea look like they're playing the victim) Disappointing of you. Also why not put korean subtitles in this? What good could a racism conversation in a country do, without being addressed to the ACTUAL members of that country? Be clear with your intentions, because people who come to this channel want truth, not your version of it. Let black people speak their whole truth when asking a question. I too am disappointed by this recent management of journalism.. in this day and age where truth is being discovered to be a lot more nuanced and complex, generalizing, simplifying, cherrypicking information out of live interview seems really suspicious. This sort of forced concision of information is what leads to useless fights among good people due to misinformation/miunderstanding/incomplete information. AsianBoss, as Steven put it himself as the CEO, was a grass roots movement toward objective journalism that would be covering details that were deliberately ommitted by the mainstream media.. I will be very sad if AsianBoss continues to gear its journalistic angle toward what they initially opposed. AsianBoss.. But then there were about 15% of people who were out and out racist (from all ages and genders). So, most of the people were really good to me and I appreciated it. I came to the realization that anti-blackness is global, but so is an appreciation of Black culture(s). I felt so heartbroken for the lady who was turned away from the hospital, just like the other lady pointed out there has to be discriminatory laws put in place so that when foreigners are mistreated, people like that can be sanctioned because I'm sure they would like to be treated with respect and kindness wherever they go. All in all, I think their bad stories outweighs the good. South Korea still has a long way to go

I like how the red haired black girl said that we're not cookies to be tasted anytime. Cookies are sold in the supermarket. If someone wants to taste one purchases can be made there. They should not presume a human is and take a bite because nobody is made from flour and butter but flesh, skin, muscle, organs and bones and that's biology not bakery. This is really dehumanizing.

This needs to have Korean subtitles. These are key forms of racial profiling and stereotyping that a lot of Koreans aren’t aware of and foreigners in Korea are not protected like regular koreans because of the color of their skin!

@joeykatoey

@@user-tt4qf2vn4j well here’s the thing. Koreans who are in Korea are not in the US. Unless they travel there they will never understand the racism Asians face in the West. But if we have to we can do both things. You can inform Koreans about their micro aggressions and unconscious racial bias toward foreigners while still protecting them from western racism (which is also a totally different subject btw). While it is incredibly important, using racism against Asians in America as an agent against why we should hold the Korean public accountable for their obvious colorism and treatment of foreigners as second class citizens as a scapegoat does no good for either side.
@joeykatoey
@joeykatoey 3 года назад
@@user-tt4qf2vn4j that’s idealistic and with good intention but like all things you can’t wish them. Everyone has biases and has to learn to kill them and fully accept that people live lives different then them in different skins and worshiping different religions. That’s no happening anytime soon . This is a complex issue and it’s almost insulting to boil it down to us all being “gods children” because the issue requires so much more then that to fix.

I was in Korea in 2016 to study and had mixed experiences. Mostly positive. I wasn’t bothered in my day to day but experienced some ignorance here and there. It was a bit traumatic and there were days I was scared to Go outside bc of how much I was stared at but I still miss it for some reason. When it was good, it was really good and when it was bad, it was really bad. The most traumatic experience was that one night I was out with a friend in Hongdae. We spotted these Korean guys with cool looking dreadlocks. She went to tell him she liked his hair and he spit on her. I was appalled. How do you hate people from the same culture you appropriate?

I am Korean. I don't talk about my skin color. I'm not talking about skin color. Communication with that person is important. You can't hate being a foreigner or anything like that. I think sincerity is important. Of course, I'm shy to speak English. But I'm going to try. I think Koreans should have an open mind. I'm going to do my best, too. I also like foreigners. I know that everything is hard because of COVID-19. As a Korean, if foreigners were discriminated against, I'm truly sorry as a representative of Koreans. I won't discriminate, either. I support foreigners. If you're upset to see an unfriendly Korean, I apologize on behalf of that person. Koreans make mistakes, too. There's nothing that suits my skin color. This is discrimination.
