I thought the same thing, but it makes no sense the fact that the woman explained and she didn't know what taxes are. Unless, she didn't know what the *word* "taxes" mean (that's the only reasonable explanation I can come up with). Because every adult SHOULD know what taxes are, because every country has it. And I say it as a foreign person that taxes are included in the price.
@brett8460

Someone I know went to a gas station for the first time to buy a chocolate bar in Canada, she was from Asia and tax is also included in the price. So when she saw that the chocolate bar was $1 she paid her $1 grab the chocolate bar and the cashier called out to her in that she didn't pay him enough, she was so embarrassed because people might have thought that she stole the chocolate
@user-dg3ug7ny5d
@user-dg3ug7ny5d 2 года назад
@@sophiejones304 It's so pointless to not include it. But I can guess that it's so companies can charge "alright" prices, and then when tax is added, slog more money than expected out of consumers' wallets. You must have extremely laxed expectations on how much everything costs, and I'd think that results in trust issues, honestly. Does Canada have a standard price you have to multiply by, or does it change based on the product? I also think it's also worth critiquing the years of education that are spent on this topic (especially in the US, which I've heard it discussed more about). If you ignored the other factors, you'd see just how much better the standard of, usefulness, and application of learnt education is in the EU and UK, and other countries with tax included. An extremely generalised assortment, but I've seen similar propositions before. Stories I've heard from students in the US who took the basic, required maths course (no idea, but taught all throughout middle school?) is that they only learnt and remembered how to calculate the tax that has to be added on, and that's it. And if that was all that you learnt, remembered, and could apply in everyday situations, then you were doing well and you haven't failed the failed system. As someone who doesn't have to calculate the selling price with tax excluded when buying, but still has to learn how to influence a price by manipulating the 10% GST rate here, I can say confidentially that I know much more out of my not even world-class education system (Australia), compared to this apparent truthful stereotype that the US' education system is horrible, and that Canada isn't much better in most things, either. In fact, I think Canada gets by on far too many things that need to be called out, because the US has become the domestic and international arsehole of the world, and Canada exploits that fact.

I don’t work in customer service, I’m a nurse and I used to work in the ICU about 20 years ago. We had a patient with traumatic brain injury on life support and the family wanted a meeting with us-we thought it was about taking the patient off of life support-but no, it was about about the possibility of a brain transplant. After we got over the shock, we told them that was not medically possible-at any hospital. They didn’t believe us and thought we just didn’t want to do it because they were poor, and we were placing cost over their loved one. One of the staff asked “well sir, even if we could, who would be the donor?” And the dad said “we can just put him on the list, like for a kidney?” But it was the way he said it, like “well, duh.”😳. No sir. We do not have the technology to do brain transplants.

My first job at 16 was at chuck e cheese and one day a lady brought her kid in for their birthday party. She wanted the real mouse to come out so her kid can hold it and take a picture with it. I just so happened to be the one that has to dress up in the mouse costume for the party. So I come out and was going to sit on the ground so this lady could get a picture of her kid and chuck E. She didn't understand that when someone is in the mouse costume we aren't supposed to talk, just wave and give hugs. She started yelling she wanted a real mouse for her kid. Then her kid got upset and started a temper tantrum and crying. Another kid ran up to hug me... mind you the costume head itself weighed a good 10lbs give or take. So it was hard to balance it and look out of the mouth. Well the kid that came running up to me did so in my blind spot so I wasn't bracing for impact cause those little shits are stronger than you think. So the moment he slammed into me caused me to fall down and the head goes flying off. I just laid there and watched it happen in slow motion. Soon as I look to my left back towards the kids and adults, one by one the kids eyes get really wide and their mouths dropped and the roar of the murderous sounding screams started. It was almost like i was chopping the head off puppies or something by the way the kids were screaming and crying. Then i looked up and every single adult there was just laughing hysterically at their kids staring at me traumatized. Oh and that lady was pissed there was no real mouse and I got fired for not holding the head on as I fell. I didn't care since I was planning to quit, I already had 2 other jobs and needed a break from kids. Sometimes, at night, I can still hear their screams.

I wasn’t legally an adult I was 16 but I at 16 years old had to explain to a grown woman that she’s was not the only person in the world named Brittany. I was working at a store that sold wedding and prom dresses at the time. This woman called because she was confirming an appointment for her mother in law. When I realized that the mother in laws name was not in our system I asked the woman if the appointment had been made under another account. She said yes hers. When I asked for her name she said Brittany. I quickly discovered that we had six different accounts that had the name Brittany on them. All as the first name. When I asked her what her last name is she said Brittany. I asked if Brittany was her first name or last name just to clarify so that I could find the right account. She got angry very quickly and saying that her name was Brittany and that I shouldn’t need a last name because her name was in our system as Brittany. I literally had to explain to her that there were six accounts for six different brides all who also had the first name Brittany and that she was not the only person to be named Brittany.

Can confirm another instance of someone thinking they're the One. Worked retail, looked up one man's account by his name and needed to confirm street name, as 5 accounts showed up. He instantly became suspicious - "What do you mean you need to confirm which address, my name is MY NAME. Someone else must be using it for fraudulent purposes!" He went from pleasant chitchat to enraged rant in a heartbeat, and I had to talk him down from calling the police/FBI/whoever by telling him that in a state population of 9+ million, let alone world population of 6+ billion, it's very common for people to share a name (especially "Robert" coupled with a not uncommon last name!). I explained that I could look up my own name right now in an online phonebook, and probably 10 matches would come up in my state alone. It took him awhile to accept this.

I'm a pharmacy tech at a large chain pharmacy/convenience store. Had a lady come up to the counter and hand me a coupon for buy one get one free store brand pain killers. I asked her if she'd like me to show her where to find the ibuprofen/acetaminophen. She said no but that she wanted to pick up two months of Percocet, highly addictive, highly regulated controlled substance. So I started asking for her info, assuming she had her pain medication ready and was just a bit confused. But no. She wanted us to give her two months worth of prescription Percocet for the price of one month. Like, WHAT?! I tried explaining that you can't just buy stuff like that over the counter, not to mention that you can't use coupons on prescriptions anyways. She just didn't get it and went off about how we should honor her coupon and be more specific, blah blah blah. Sorry ma'am, didn't know that we needed to clarify that you can't just walk up to a pharmacy and buy whatever medication you feel like. We're not drug dealers.

2:55 I can totally understand this customer. In Germany (and I bet in other countries as well) the price already includes the taxes, which is honestly very logical in my opinion. Idk how many times I wanted to order something from the US, because the prices were so low, until I went to the check out and got hit with the taxes... I'll never understand the logic behind this, but maybe someone can explain this to me. *I just read it's because the amount of taxes differentiates depending on the products, but it's the same here, too. So nope, that's not a good explanation, why.
@michaelmclachlan1650
@michaelmclachlan1650 2 года назад
Sales tax in the USA is not federal revenue and so has no central control. It's levied by states, counties and cities on an individual basis. Therefore it was simpler to list a base price and retailers would then add the appropriate taxes for their location. Whilst nowadays that could easily be controlled by computer pricing systems you would need to educate an entire country about the change - who would be first? And imagine the arguments with customers; "It was cheaper yesterday - why did you put the price up!" Changing it is possible but is it worth the disruption?
@CaffeinatedTigress
@CaffeinatedTigress 2 года назад
Because if you calculate the taxes prior to the sales, you'll end up paying more in the long run... and we're sticklers about being taxed. (Hello... tea party?) My current job requires me to make multiple purchases each day. I input the receipts. Our program calculates taxes based on each item whereas the store I purchase from calculates taxes after the subtotal. No joke. While my subtotal always comes out correct, if taxes aren't also spot on (meaning the estimated tax calculated per-item equals what we actually paid), we end up being under charged 1 to 2 cents per transaction for taxes. Very *VERY* rarely is it ever over charged by 1 (and never 2). On average after all is said and done, we usually save 5 cents on taxes per day at the minimum. That's $18 a year just at our store. There's about 570 stores in the US. If I were to use my very middle of the road tax percentage and pretend all of them use the same, that's over $10k in taxes we saved all because taxes are calculated after the subtotal. So.... yes... the amount of taxes differentiates depending on the products and those taxes are calculated after all purchases are subtotaled... not before... because taxation without representation is theft.

The tax thing shocked me too when I was in the UK as a student. We went to Domino's cause they had this offer of free buffet food for 4 £, so we went in,: Then when we finished lunch the bill price rised to 8 £, and we had to ask the waiter, we were not rude or anything, but we were not happy either, and it seems it was not the first time so he explained that the rise comprised the taxes and the waiter service, ( it was free buffet but servers would tell us to let them know if we needed extra drinks to fill for us etc) From then and on we would ask about the final price before deciding to enter a place or not. The last guy helping out the old lady who came to buy the Internet was the sweetest for taking the time to explain everything to her. kudos!

Besides, with the scenario she posted, you wouldn't even be helping yourself out. Giving her 20.50 for 17.67 is just going to give you 2.83 back (vs 2.33 without the .50) so that .50 you "found" would still go right back to you.

Well, it was just her and I closing and we were chatting about personal stuff and she said she felt pregnant and was late but couldn't possibly actually be pregnant because the . . . er. . . activities. . . she and her bf engaged in should NOT result in pregnancy. Well, I had to ask some rather invasive questions to sus out the truth, but ended up explaining that if you engaged in regular old sex at any point without protection there IS a chance you could get pregnant, regardless of the presence or absence of certain . . . culminative events. Anyway, she ended up testing in the bathroom at work and was, indeed, pregnant.

1. A friend I had didn’t know Dungeons and Dragons was a real concept... just thought it was a made up game for shows. 2. I had a guest that stated her coffee was too filled that she wanted room to put milk in & asked what should she do as to remove the coffee, I told her to drink the coffee.. to make room..

I was in university before found out Cadets was a real thing. I thought it had been invented for Star Trek. It sounded odd when someone I met said they had been a cadet.

I feel bad for the guy who thought that the books are ruined, especially since he’s older.

10:40 **snort** I'm embarrassed to admit I've done something similar before lmao. One day, my friend and I were in a store called Poundland, which is basically the British version of stores like Dollar Tree in the US. Somehow, I had never been in a Poundland before despite living in Scotland my whole life (I think our town must not have had one at the time?) We were looking at things to buy, I picked something up and turned to my friend and asked "How much is this? There's no prices anywhere." She stared at me for a second, then said slowly, "Beeba . . . we're in POUNDland. It's £1." Cue facepalm moment 😂😂😂

To be fair, it would be a reasonable question now because Poundland has since started stocking items that cost more than a pound 🙄

Here in Canada we have "Dollar Tree", "Dollarama", and "A Buck or Two". Guess how much things cost the the last one.

A girl came in wanting a replacement or a refund for a personalised (delicate by nature) glass Christmas bauble that broke AFTER she took it. Apparently it broke in her car because she didn't handle it with care because she thought the cardboard box that held it would completely prevent it from shattering. This was a day or 2 after she purchased it, we no longer had the exact style of bauble as it was Christmas Eve and that was the last day we'd be open until November the next year. She couldn't understand that if your (very fragile, delicate) purchase gets damaged after you take it away, its on you and the company owes you nothing.

To be fair, some things aren't the same outside the US. In every country I've ever visited, tax is baked in. Other point: here in Brazil, you really could cash in cheques in any bank you'd like back in the day (although that's so old school we've retired them).

Interesting! To me it sounded like the check was fake and he was trying to scam the bank. Most US banks will only cash a check if you have a bank account or if the check originated from their bank (and verify that it’s real).

About 5 years ago I worked at a convenient store that sold its own self serve coffee and we did “Happy Hour” where coffee was sold half price from 5pm to 7pm with numerous signs around the coffee area saying that. Well this lady came in at like noon and started complaining because her coffee was full price and the sign says it’s half price. It took me, another coworker and of course the manager to explain to her what the sign said before she finally gave up and accepted it.

I used to work at a gym and had to explain to someone that the charges would happen every month. She had joined and canceled several times, because she'd sign up and pay for her first month, then her payments would decline, so we'd have to contact her to collect her past due payments. Every time, she was confused: "but I already paid!" yes, ma'am, you paid for your first month, but you also have to pay for every month after that if you'd like to keep coming to our gym! Mind you, because she was a repeat offender, when she would come back to re-enroll, we would always make sure to go eeeexxxxttttrrrraaaaaa slow with her, explaining the charges multiple times, and she'd insist she understood 🙄 Honestly, I think this lady might have had a mental disability or something.... Like does she not pay rent? Or Netflix charges? How is that so confusing 🤣

In retail you have to be really careful whenever you're taking money. A lot of people want to trip you up. Never ever, take money from someone unless they are handing you the exact change. 50 cents on 67 cents. Don't bother. No. People like to nickel and dime people easy way for them to make money. Don't screw up. This isn't your money. I always kept a nice receipt calculator at all my registers. Especially if someone was trying to play Mastermind and trip someone up and make them give them the wrong change. Don't do it don't do it. But another thing. Everyone should be taught how to count back change. I would practice with all of my employees whenever I would first hire them. It's an expectation. It's not that hard. A good manager would help you with that. And always make sure you have a backup tool so that you never trip up. I like perfect pills and I will give you the skills to keep one.
