My brother committed suicide. The first time I called my best friend to talk to her (as needed soemone to talk too at the time) she spoke about herself for a solid 30mins. The whole time I gradually realised that she has never cared about me, only herself and whatever attention she can grab. That was the last time I ever spoke to her.

Well it depends i get what you're saying But my friend lost her baby and brother same day she didn't have much to say so I tried to get her mind off of it and when I got to work and had to go she said thank you for that I needed to talk to someone but I can't even think straight. I needed to get my mind on anything else for a minute.

A group of boys were talking about me in class WITH my best friend and I ended up hearing about it from another student in the class. I already knew she was just trying to fit in and be one of the boys but I knew I meant nothing to her because she was willing to hurt me and embarrass me to make herself look good. Nothing worse than those types of girls.

My girlfriend and I had a "friend" who agreed to watch our dog over night and when we called her she said she only stayed for 30 minutes and than left our dog alone overnight. We came home to him scared, lonely, hungry but extremely happy to see us. We let that friend know that we were done after that.

Quick tip: lend SOME money (not much), and notice the effort the person puts to a) give it back to you, b) live life as nothing happened or c) ask for more. The actress girl - I know how you feel. I had my feature film debut and not only did he not come, he didn't even acknowledge it or say anything, not even a "I'm happy for you". I texted him a week later asking if he was happy for me and he said yes (Not knowing what I was even talking about) and I literally had to tell him about it...and he didn't say much and we never got together to talk or anything when I really wanted to celebrate with him. I've cut him off. I was there for his wedding as his best man, there for his career, and gave up an entire summer for him when he had a break up. All things he would NEVER do for me. -_- Sucks, but it sucks more for him now that he's out of my life and I'm moving forward to happier days =)

After her(ex-Bff) boyfriend told me that his friend’s thought I looked really attractive at her birthday party she drunkenly shouts in a room full of people “Yea that’s cuz they like that grandma booty! My 'friend' pretty much just used who I was (LGBTQ+) to appear supportive and open minded. Learned that they're transphobic and racist as hell and voiced it to other folk (who all told me almost immediately) and at one point they almost pushed me to end it all. And they, to this day, say that they've never done anything wrong.
My best friend was gay, and when I wouldn't sleep with her, when she hit on me out of the blue one day, (because I'm straight which she always knew and I always told her) she never spoke to me again. We were friends 20 years. Since kindergarten. She was just trying to "turn me" pretty much the whole time. I wish her well.
I moved to a different city with my best friend, I ended up finding a new man, but she always had weird ways around him, wouldn’t let me be alone, wouldn’t let me message him, I just thought she was jealous of him, one day we fought and she goes missing. Comes home the next day with hickeys and tells me she slept with my man, he left me and they moved in together and did all they could to rub it in my face, they ended up having kids and were together for 7 years. The blessing is… he ended up being abusive, sadly she got beaten several times a week, their kids were put into a home due to this and she just sent him to jail not long ago and is trying to get her kids back, she contacted me a year ago and filled me in. To think had she not intervened that’s the life i would’ve lived. She is doing well.

I had a group of friends I would always hang out with back in 9th grade. One day after PE i walked out if the changing room without noticing my clothes was not fixed right. My backside was showing from the back and my skirt was risen up. Thank God I didn't take off my gym shorts. They watched me walk around the school like that for the entire lunch break. Some stranger told me my backside was showing. I confronted them on why they let me walk around like that. They laughed at me and told me that's what I deserved. I've been moving different ever since.

Sometimes it doesn't matter how many people you have around you, you can still be lonely. Try and focus on things that make you happy, and perhaps along the way you might meet people that have the same interests. I do agree with you that being alone is the easier, more simple option. I only have a couple of friends, and I much prefer my own company, but I suffer with depression and my low mood makes it difficult to respond to people which means it's pretty impossible to make new friends. But if you actively want to make friends then you definitely can, just think positive and enjoy yourself
I feel the same way as you. Graduated from high school 2 years ago. I already felt me and my friends were starting to drift apart during our last year. Everyone had different interests, friend groups and goals in life, so we just lost contact. Another friend of mine sudedenly stopped talking to me in 11th grade, I still don't know why. We used to be very close and then she just ghosted me. The only friend from school I managed to keep moved to a different city so we don't see each other often. Now I'm in university but hasn't really managed to make friends due to both my social anxiety and the whole covid situation. (Most of my first year at uni was entirely online.) Sorry for venting on your comment. You probably didn't need to hear that but I felt like sharing. It will probably get better for you. I'm pretty sure you'll make new friends and until then just keep focusing on things you like that make you happy!
I met this girl in middle school and she seemed genuinely nice upfront but came to find out behind my back she was just talking shit about everything I did, every time I had a boyfriend she told everyone “he can do better” and just had something to say for everything even the way I walked bothered her. One day my phone broke and I had a different boyfriend this time, well she used this as an advantage to talk to my boyfriend all day long, flirting and sexting him. Me and this girl came over to each other’s houses and things like that I would’ve never thought she could do something like that till I saw it with my own eyes. She also hated the fact that my pictures would get more attention than hers that really raised a red flag

I worked with three friends at work, and one day I was in a car accident. The next day before I got to work the two friends were telling the third friend about me and the car wreck, and she casually says “oh yes… I drove past her wrecked car (insert road name) and saw her there.” She didn’t even stop. I was not friends with her after that.
My son was 2 and I was so broke I didn't have hot water or heat. When I told my "best friend" she was very uninterested. She didn't even offer me a shower at her house. We were training for a dance competition and it ended up being way more expensive then I anticipated. When I realized that I didn't even have money to eat while I were there I went to my hotel room , that I split with a girl I wasn't even friends , and cried from stress. She then had that audacity to call a meeting at the studio and her and the owner proceeded to tell me and 2 other girls that we ruined their couples weekend because we were broke and couldn't do anything!! The girl that I split the room with ended up becoming one of my best friends and I stopped talking to "my best friend" that day
In high school my step father was "messing" with me and had been for years, I would call my best friend after these incidents crying to her about it. I wasn't allowed out much but 1 DAY I snuck out to hang out with my friend, SHE was hanging out with 4 or 5 boys . When u walked up everything got awkward, and everybody was smirking until 1 boy started laughing at me and said " hey why don't you just go home and F..K YOUR DAD" AND THEY ALL STARTED LAUGHING LIKE IT WAS THE FUNNIEST THING THEY EVER HEARD!!!! I WAS SO HUMILIATED! I LOOKED AT HER AND SHE SMIRKED AND PUT HER HEAD DOWN!!!
I am so sorry that this happened to you in this world is really hard you can’t trust people you can’t trust your dad or your friend and then her friends laughed about it. It wasn’t funny at all.

My friend was in an abusive, toxic relationship which we all knew she's in but she never aknowledged it, which I understand, it was probably very painful, but instead of trying to fix her life, she was actively working on ruining my marriage,my career, which I found out much later and my relationship with our mutual friends by spreading horrible lies and gossip about me. When all else failed (I still had no idea she was doing all this stuff behind my back) I think she tried to poison me. One day she came to me and brought me a wrapped pastry "she made herself". First red flag for me is the fact that I absolutely 200% know that she can't cook let alone make pastries. Second red flag was "eat it, don't be afraid , I didn't put anything in it". I got home from work and threw it away. The next day she asked if I have eaten it. I said yes. The next day she called our boss and told him she won't be returning to work, she blocked me on social media and completely disappeared from my life. I am not 100% sure, but I really think she put something inside that pastry and she knew I haven't eaten it.

Later, when she quit her job a mutual friend confronted me and asked if all that stuff she was spreading about me were true. I was shocked at how many horrible lies she told her and tried to destroy our friendship. She also told me that she went to a witch lady or I don't know what's it called to do black magic and curses. She was very fixated on me. Geez,just thinking about it makes my skin crawl. That's when I realized that she probably put something in that pastry and out mutual friend confirmed that she was suspicious, too, but it was too late. I haven't seen her in almost two years and I hope I never will.

My best friend at the time moved out of state. My brother committed suicide and she came back to our hometown saying she wanted to support me in my time of need. It went from support to, “welcome back party” putting all the focus on her. I was the one who ended up driving everyone everywhere because I had access to a car. She went back and I didn’t talk to her after that.
For the dude that sold his motorcycle for the friends bills. Didn't realize that the friend made him so uncomfortable because that encouraged him to not out stay his welcome.
My “friend” was suuuper close to my now ex boyfriend. She used to cover up their interactions as “oh im just helping him out because he doesn’t know what to do when ure upset”. The “friend” is in my class so i have to be somewhat courteous since we’re seeing each other everyday but im glad both her and my ex have no room in my mind anymore.
When a friend who I supported through her drug addiction, losing her job, failing out of school let her new boyfriend who was a controlling, possessive asshole yell at me in front of her and didn’t say a word. I had defended her for years , our whole friendship. She left me to fend for myself.
After I went into remission after a long bout of cancer and chemotherapy I eventually went into remission. I called my “good friend” the great news! She said “Oh, that’s great news!” “Now I don’t have to pretend to be your friend anymore!” “I didn’t want to look like a bitch dumping you while you were dying of cancer.” 😵 Never saw or spoke to her after that day! I made sure all our mutual friends new what kind of person she really was!
My best friend when I was 11 showed her true colours when we took a 100 question maths test I got all 100 right while my friend got 95 she then told the teacher I cheated off her and the teacher then said I only got 50 questions right. When I asked my friend why she did that she told me "I'm only friends with you when you make me look smarter" she then went on to say if I wanted to remain friends with her I wouldn't do better then her in any tests. Well we weren't friends after that.

I had a best friend that lived 3 houses down from me. My brother killed himself, and that summer my mother sent me to my Aunt's house, because my sister and I kept fighting. I was dating a boy named John at the time. When I came back, after being away for 2 weeks, I found out that that my friend was telling everyone that she was going to "kick my ass." She was dating my boyfriend. I didn't care about the boyfriend, she was like a sister to me, but she kept pursuing me. Finally, I was confronted publicly by her. I beat the shit out of her, and we never talked again. So sad, because I really loved her, but she obviously cared nothing for me.
I honestly cannot say for sure, but in situations like these, sometimes both girls are being played. You may never know, but there's a good chance he was dating you both at the same time and then made it seem like you were the "other person" intruding on their relationship. Who knows?
A time I found out my bf wasn't my bf. When I lived with her it all went downhill. I had an abortion and she told everyone because she is pro-life and I of course was pro-choice. So years later after we went our separate ways one of her closest friends came to me out of nowhere and told me she secretly got one and didn't want everyone to know because they all knew how bad she treated me and she didn't want backlash or be called a hypocrite. Its been 8 years and we still haven't spoken nor did she apologize. Some people aren't worth your time.
My take away on this is KNOW WHEN TO LET GO. I know this because I was taught loyalty is everything BUT being abused and taken advantage of doesn't deserve LOYALTY I learned the hard way.

Where do I start? When my car broke down, while leaving work, in bad weather. I was at my "best friends" (maid of honor at her wedding)exit in a Kroger parking lot 5 min away and triple A was 3 hours out, at 3 am. She refused to come and get me or help me, said she had to sleep to get up for work. That was the day and haven't spoken to her since.
i’ve realized not all people even your family will treat your dog like you do they will treat it as an object. for that reason my sister and my cousin had to prove to me they care for my dog just as i do before leaving him alone with her. i would have called 911 and got her charged no different then doing that to a human child
I realized my friend wasn’t my friend when she never call or came to see me , when I was on chemotherapy for cancer not one phone call to ask how I was she never stop by to ask how I was ! I realized when I-was done chemotherapy I knew our friendship was over! My friends mean a lot to me and all I needed at the time was my friends support! Got to admit it hurt a lot ! The blessings about the cancer is that I seen a lot of kindness from complete strangers and people I just knew on a casual basis!
Had a hard ass time making friends growing. I had some friends that didn't stick around but also one friend who didn't like me for some reason. I remember she fooled around with the guy I liked in my own bedroom after I left to watch TV. She then came up to my real best friend and went, "Oh, hey it's great to see you! You still friends with that girl from Elementary school?" "Uh, yeah?" "Yeah, I always thought she was weird. Wanna hang out with me instead?" My friend told her off, which yeah the other girl wasn't happy about but I at least know who my real friends are 😁
I had a best friend who had so many horrible things in her childhood and I felt for her. For 18 years I halved everything and gave it to her, let her sleep in my bed when she was injured, paid for her to escape a nut boyfriend etc. Then I had kids with special needs. She couldn't take my pain and dropped our friendship.

It felt as if a boyfriend had broken up with me. I was so heartbroken as I loved her and thought our friendship was solid. I never asked for anything back that I paid. She is not a normal woman. I highly doubt she has any friends at all now and sleeps with her flask. The song "Chandelier" is her to a tee. But it was so painful. I ran to the hospital when she was hurt etc.
I think there is a comedy show about vampires. It's like the office but a vampire version and one of them vampires on there was an emotional vampire and he would go around sucking the emotions out of everyone then he ran into a person it didn't work on her and he didn't understand why so he waited and watched her go do the same thing he was doing to other people as well. She was also an emotional vampire. People who constantly need validation, a pep talk, reassurance, a listening ear, guidance and they load all their pain and problems on to you. Usually can't return that same love because they are an empty cup and they cannot pour into you. They want to be an empty cup because of the attention they get. They want to live a sad story and be the only victim.

The moment I realized my “best friend” wasn’t my friend was when all of our friends and about 5 people I DIDN’T know told me she had told them about extremely personal information that I had trusted her with. The relationship was not a good one as she also used me for my car, free babysitting, money etc. (literally could write a book just off this) but the spreading my business around was the straw that broke the camels back. Wish I would have seen that she was a POS before I spent four years being in a co dependent friendship but hey what is life if not full of lessons 🤷🏼♀️

Well I had this " friend" who I've been " friends" with since 5th grade. Though, we have had our ups and downs; I still wanted to show her that no matter what; I'll always be there for her. Many times I've seen red flags, and chose to ignore the all. But what was the final red flag; was when I lost my older brother in year 2010( Sophomore year); she was never there or even called to make sure that I was straight. Did I mention that she lived 2 doors down from me?
Anytime my Trans friend needed help,I would do it on a whim,even went to her transitional appts with her. We both liked writing and I kept suggesting we could team up,and she would always decline. She then went on to steal my material and calls it hers, and now she gets all these opportunities as a Trans writer,based on work that isn't even hers,she said if I said anything I would be considered anti Trans and no one would care.
Two moments with the same friend. I'm black and he is white and one day he told me how he used to say the n word around his aunt because he thought it was funny that it made her mad. I stayed friends with him out of ignorance. The other time was when I told him how some jerk on a dating app was rude to me. I had messaged the guy asking how he was and he replied "was better until you messaged me." Or something along those lines. I told this friend that and he literally laughed in my face because he thought what the guy said was funny.
Had a best friend for 23 years and thought we'll be friends for the rest of our lives. I had something devastating happened to me. All I wanted was some time with her so I could forget temporarily what I'm going through. She just ghosted me. If a friend abandons you on your lowest point, that's not really a friend at all.
Told her about an intimate experience I had that (while consensual) I really didn't want. In hindsight it was quite traumatic and I really struggled with it mentally. Still do almost 5 years later. I needed to tell someone, so I figured I would tell my best friend. I told her about 10 seperate times not to tell other people. 2 months later I found out it took her all of 5 minutes to tell a bunch of our mutual friends. Because this experience that really messed me up was apparently just fun gossip to her. She also tried to secretly feed me alcohol one time by putting it in my drinks because I refused to drink for personal reasons and that made me "too boring". We were 17 :) Thankfully it was alcohol and not some other drug, but it's still really messed up to secretly put something in someone else's drink.
⚠️WARNING: mention of a de*th threat⚠️My bestfriend tried to break my wrist by pinning me to the ground, twisting my hand around nearly all the way,at school, because i was ‘annoying’ her… and my teacher blamed me and she blamed her anger issues the only reason my wrist didn’t break was because a teacher saw and heard me screaming and crying to say I was traumatised after that is an understatement and we were still friends after that because I was gaslighted at 6 YEARS OLD and was dealing with crap from her and other friends for 4 years until I moved which lead to a really toxic friendship and bullying later on in the future and during that time and while I was being bullied (by my BFF after I moved) one of the things she did was threaten to unalive me… and I had no idea ANY of this or any other things she said was bullying… soo I now I have trust issues, trauma and have a lot of insecurities that I developed from a young age.
Known this girl since we were literal toddlers. Paternal grandma would babysit us, so we became friends and ended up in the same church daycare and all of that. Wrote snail mail letters to each other (before email was a thing) and hung out almost every weekend. Of course as we get into junior high/high school, we grow distant. She was a cheerleader and hung out with other cheerleaders. But we’d still say in the halls and all of that. So still friendly. Fast forward to 2009, my maternal grandpa has passed away. I sent her a message on FB letting her know when the funeral and viewing would be in case she could come. My grandparents treated her like another grandkid. Her paternal grandparents were best friends with my grandparents. I’m 2012, my maternal grandma passed away. Again, sent her a message, got no response..to either. Left on read. No condolences or anything. Saw her grandparents at my grandma’s viewing and they were UPSET that she ignored me. Hell, my parents have been split up since I was 4 and my paternal grandparents still came to the viewings and funerals because they cared about my nanny and papaw too. Again, in 2014, my paternal grandpa passed away from cancer. I didn’t message her anything, but had been posting old pictures and memories. She didn’t even attempt to reach out. Knew she was on fb because she’s doing Younique shit and was posting that or posting stories of her kids. She even tried to get me on her team for that and LipSense at some point. It all came to a head in 2020 when I posted about the protests. She said some subtly racist shit and me and my friends called her out. I said my piece and got offline. Got back on, and she was mad that I didn’t stand up for her. So I went O F F and laid it all out. Cut her completely out of my life, but it still stings. My grandparents loved her like their own. When her own paternal grandma passed away last year? I reached out regardless of our falling out and offered to help if she or her parents needed anything at all. Because I loved her grandma and she treated me like a grandkid. She was one of my Nanny’s best friends. It wasn’t difficult, and I’ll never understand how someone couldn’t be there for someone during a painful time in their life. But that lady who’s friend dated her brothers and dad and all of that..damn. The woman is a warrior and her “friend” and dad can both eat a bag of dicks. And the lady with the friend who hurt her dog?! What a psycho! That poor pup :(

In University - 2 of my best friends at school...when I told them I wanted to get better at writing & art. I said I wanted to take lessons through the city on drawing . They laughed at me saying drawing skills are innate so I won't get better. I didn't know how to react so changed the subject and told them I wanted to write more. I published some poems in anthologies at 15 and was proud of it - they laughed saying everyone gets published in those. Even if that were true the fact they laughed at me like that hurt. I also struggled with anxiety so that just made it worse. Then I found out a few days later that this big event we all planned to go to (4 of us), they said they couldn't get any tickets. I ran into them as they were leaving for that event. All of them except me. The third friend apparently didn't know I wanted to go as it was last minute for her. She said to the others "you said you had an extra ticket..." I just smiled and said it worked out then since I went the day before anyways. After that I stopped reaching out to them, realizing that I had been their friend but they weren't mine. We were done.
Not only one friend, but lots of them (at the same time). When I was 11 till 13, I studied in this evangelic school, and I actually had a lot of friends there. At that time, I thought we were all best friends, we weren't grow apart, and we were keep in touch. But then when they found out I was part of the LGBTQ+ community, all of them just condemned me, saying I was going to hell, that they would never talk to me again, that if they knew that before they wouldn't have even touch me. That fucked me up a lot, I was only 13, going through depression on my on because of that, and I couldn't tell anyone because I thought that if I were to come out to someone, they would react the same way. Also, looking back now, I experienced a lot of racism as well. They would talk shit about my hair (and that made me always wear it in a ponytail, but since it was a curly afro, it would sit straight and always looked frizzy), and when I cut it so I could use it natural, they literally laughed at my face in front of the whole school (and I then proceeded to forgive them). So yeah, I know this feeling..
8th grade year, I got bullied constantly by this one guy that was in every single one of my core classes. During, between, and after each class, it's like he lived to make me miserable. My "best friend since kindergarten" instead of standing up for me or try stopping him, joined in from time to time. I stopped talking to him completely and he asked me what my problem was. I told him and he responded "We're just messing with you man, calm down". I realized who my real friends were (who sadly none of which were in any of my classes) and just kept to myself the rest of the year. I hated middle school enough and that year was rough.
I had someone steal my identity and claim me on their taxes, they also got pulled over and used my name but got caught because the cop could tell they weren't my age because there was a pretty big gap. They also put many of their bills in my name it was super sweet of them especially since it was my aunt....
Wow such a coincidence that this showed up in my recommended today. Just found out today that my friend of 15 years is willing to go behind my back and steal a guy that I like. While she was messaging me acting supportive and telling me to go for it, at the same time she was confessing her attraction to him…saying that she wanted to be with him. The thing is we have mutual friends, and it got back to me..messages and all. I knew for awhile her actions were sus, but seeing it with my own eyes hits very different lol.

My "best" friend demanded a car wash gift certificate when I came into an unexpected inheritance. She's been giving me "gifts" that are just old things from her house that she doesn't want anymore. I had a feeling all of these "gifts" would turning into wanting something back. BUT to DEMAND a GC over the phone just put me over the top.
I’ve always struggled with depression and been loud about it (to friends and fam). My bestie calls me one day and her cousin has just committed suicide; they weren’t close, but he was still family and it rocked her. She was feeling guilty and - before asking how I’m doing in particular- starts telling me I can’t hurt myself and all the reasons why I have to live. I tell her my dog just died and I’m living with my 94 yo grandma whose also dying, and life is just tough right now. Oh. This was also April of 2020 😂 start of pandemic, so unknown and everything up in the air. I tell her I need to nap and I have a short window do to it, so i gotta go. Tried to assure her everything is ok. She continues to try and text me but I silence my phone… so she fb messages MY PARENTS TELLING THEM IM SUICIDAL. Among a host of rude things said about me in the message to them. It was unreal; I truly wonder why she was my friend at all. Anyhoo.. my parents freaked out and they were going to force me to move out from my grandmothers and not allow me to live with them (I was in a full time vocational school program, I needed someone’s help to be able to do that and then get a job), unless I went and “volunteered” myself at a mental health facility for several days. While I was in the facility, my grandmother had a heart attack and went into the hospital and I never saw her again. And my “friend” since 8th grade (were in our mid 30s), didn’t even want to talk about it. Fuck that. That was just the cherry on the cake; other moments of her behavior were just so atrocious ..
I have a story. When I was 11 I had this bff we were inseparable, always doing things together, talking, dressing alike and so on. When my parents divorced I moved with my mom in the apartment next to hers. From that moment she started to talk always less and less. One day, one of the only time I was talking to her she shouted in my face "Fuck you mom, she should have never divorced your dad. That's why I am not talking with you". This was said to me at 11 leaving me with no friends, an abusive father a depressed mother and a shitty situation in general. Since that moment I never talked to her
I sleep good every night knowing I’m a honest loyal and genuine person who doesn’t backstab or gossip about the people around me like seriously how do some of these disturbed ppl get any rest?? I would not be able to lay my head on my pillow at night peacefully knowing I backstabbed/mistreated a genuine friend. Carrying a guilty conscience has to be one of the crappyiest feelings ever
My best friend from high school went radio silent for MONTHS beginning the moment my dad entered the hospital and started fighting for his life. This occurred a few months after I almost lost my life driving to her grandmother’s funeral during a storm.
5th Grade: I always played kickball with a group of like 20 people but only like 2 of those people were actually my friends (or "friends"). One day I was going over to the field to play kickball during lunch as usual, and when I got there, the whole group of 20 people started telling me to go away and that they didn't want me to be there. Even my "friends" were a part of it, and one of the two comes over to me and says, "We just want a break from you right now." Honestly one of the most mortifying moments of my life. 8th Grade: I was doing a performance of Mary Poppins (me and another friend, let's call her A, were both in the ensemble). We were both friends with another girl, N, and she was going to see the show. N told me that she was only going to the show to see A and didn't care that I was in it. We all 3 were part of the same friend group of around 6-7 people or so, and all of them continued to hang out, but whenever I tried to talk to any of them they all iced me out and wouldn't speak to me, so out of embarrassment I left the group and spent the last 3 or so months of middle school eating lunch in the library and texting my mom :(

i dont trust anyone except my own mother to watch my bunny. she is my baby and bunnies are extremely fragile. they can die from not getting enough hay by g.i. stasis in just 24 hours, from going into shock of being too scared, and other things. the first story horrified me. how could someone do that to an animal? ):
Ya well me and my cousin have birthdays a day apart, and pretty much more than half my "friends" that I invited didn't show up to my birthday but a day later most of my "friends" that didn't show up to my birthday came to my cousins birthday. It's honestly a whole another level of hurt.
When they get angry at you for mentioning that your birthday just passed because they think you’re “trying to make them feel bad for forgetting” but you’ve been friends for the better part of a decade and they never remembered it.
We were really close while working together. We did project based work, full time, so there was a lot of down time where we'd share fun and tragic stories, and even hung out a couple times outside of work. Seemed we had mutual fun, and we never had a problem. When we were close to the end of our work contract, we talked about linking again, but every time I texted an open invitation to our old work group chat, she wouldn't say anything. And when I'd text her directly, she was always "too busy". I found out she was staying in touch with other old coworkers, but she would rarely answer me, and never texted me first. Fine. I guess you don't want to be friends, right? But after I offer her the chance to talk to someone important to the field she wants penetrate, she understandably hopped on that, but also started texting me FIRST.. Random cute stuff, as if we were besties. That's just so fake to me, and made me realize that the people she stayed in touch with were the type who were showy about being connected. While I'm not the type to brag about people I know, or things I've done. So she probably thought that meant I didn't have potential. And more than that, thought that didn't make me a worthy person to stay in touch with. I was her SUPERIOR. I obviously got the position for a reason, and shouldn't have to brag to prove myself worthy of your friendship.
I am 47, I don't call anyone “my friend” anymore. I just say someone I know. The only people I have around me and are close are people who have passed the test of time. All others are acquaintances, colleagues, my kids’ friends’ parents. I go out if Im invited, I organize outings, I run out to help when Im called but I have no serious attachments. Teaching my kids same. The best you can be to people but don't expect so much. If you see it reciprocated, accept it with gratitude but just live.
2014 met a coworker who was notorious for recruiting roommates to pay her bills. Little did I know I was sucker of the year. Live in personal chef and nanny. When I decided to get back to my life all of a sudden I wasn't a friend. Moved out and all of a sudden she was not my friend and my son was diagnosed with cancer I had no car she never called checked on me but to top it off she sent me a DM that she was not invited to the funeral... wow what a friend.
