I was owned by a BMW 2002tii around 1976/79. During that time - A. I got THREE speeding tickets within 12 hours and still kept my licence. B. I learned that one can handbrake turn a car through 720* degrees. and...C. I had the most fun from a car that afterwards I slowed down and accepted that that was as good as it could get. Loved "YWS 55".

Finally someone who really drives a vintage car and takes it for spin instead of letting it rot in the museum! Kudos to AJ and Michel for this entertaining classic! /Thomas

This is not really a vintage car!!! It cannot be, as I owned one. Well, not the upmarket tii reviewed here, I had the base 2002, but it was a great car, lovely handling and quite powerful (for its day). Vintage means pre 1930, so my motorbike was not even vintage, as a 1936 AJS is considered too "new". My late father collected proper vintage cars. They are fun to drive; the position of the foot pedals had not been agreed at that stage, so the throttle pedal was in the middle and the brake on the right hand side on his 1928 Alvis. That makes for interesting driving.

For sure! It's indeed sad to see classic cars - moving objects by definition - condemned to stay, basically, in stasis. A car "museum" should be displayed on the road like here :-)

Hi Guy, thanks for the feedback. Agreed, this is certainly not a vintage car. I just used "classic car", "vintage car", and "young-timer" interchangeably without worrying about the textbook definition.

I own its big brother, a '71 2800 and I drive it as often as I can. I used to have a modern daily driver but got rid of it because it was boring as hell.

Wow! I finally see a car I still actually own! I've had my 2002 since 1979! Not the Tii but a Ti still! This is what put BMW on the map here in the states!

Very nice example from the BMW classic collection. The 2002 tii in its day was a driver's performance car, still is. Drives beautifully. Not an Oldtimer and certainly not vintage. As the Rally is called, it's a Youngtimer! Interesting to hear young folk like AJ (and Michel with his Golf Mk1 review) describe these cars. The cars aren't old - it must be just me! Many thanks for the great video, Aditya.

Wow. This was a delightful treat to watch. I like the simplicity and elegance of this car and I was surprised at that sun roof, I wasn't expecting that feature! No electronics excess, so I guess with this car, there is a more direct connection between man and machine.

Oh wow, brings back the memories. My first car was a used 2002, 1975 carburetor model. The interior is different from this model. Mine had an external a/c which was cold on a rainny day and not cool enough on a hot day and the faster i drove it the colder the a/c became. Loved it. Was so sad to sell it but was really difficult to maintain in Malaysia. I once had to wait a month for a flange coupling. Mine was Henna Red color with cream interior. Thank you for this review, nostalgic. Great video. I retired a few years ago and bought myself a BMW E92, because i started with a 2-door BMW and wanted to retire also with 2-door BMW ;)

I kind of grew up in a car like this. In 1968 my folks bought a BMW 1500 - the new class BMW. It needed some work and was re-sprayed in deep - mid blue before being presented to the family. My dad was a hard worker at the time in Germany and got his stuff together to get us a newish car that was really cool to drive. We went all over Europe in the BMW 1500 on trips to Italy on 6 week summer holidays and weekends to Nuerburgring to watch some local bike and car racing. Times were good! In about 1972 the old man decided to trade up to the '02 series and bought a 1602 from a local car dealer. It was family related business dealings at the time so I guess he got it for the right price with work that needed to be done. In no time the 1602 was rebored to accept the pistons from the 2.8 liter CS 6 cylinder coupe - bumping compression to around 10.5:1 and giving around 1950cc displacement. This thing was pretty fast for an old BMW. Dad then welded up a 110 Liter aluminium tank to make sure we could cover 1200km in one go on the way to Italy and Spain. Fond memories from a long time ago. The 2002 tii is a great car by any standard

Thanks for the review! I'd also like to see more of those youngtimer and oldtimer reviews. Let's say Autogefuel Classics series additionally to the main Autogefuel style. I'd even like to watch a review of 1970 Opels and Fords, everything what People were driving those days on the streets. The internet is full of all the mainstream performance car videos. What you just did and with the depth - it's something unique. It's the closest experience to a time travel and it really opens up your eyes with a lot of unforgettable emotions. In the Summer my daily driver is a Ford Granada, bought from Germany (year 1981) :)

Love this review! My first car was a '69 2002Ti (from 1979-1988), second was a '74 (from '88-'92), and access to my Dad's beautiful '72 for most of that time. I still dream about them at least once a week.

Great video, AJ! Really enjoyed it. It's lovely to see a vintage car like the BMW 2002 tii being covered in Autogefühl videos. I wonder how many modern cars can survive long enough to earn an 'H' license plate. How many people even maintain their cars that long and with that much care? Thanks a lot for the trip down the memory lane. Hope you enjoyed filming next to the Moritzburg castle, nice shots! Cheers, Govind

You've brought back a lot of wonderful memories for me with this review. I owned a '73 2002, same color and slightly tuned with a Weber carburetor and headers. Use to make weekend runs of a thousand miles to and from Atlanta when dating my wife. One thing I have to disagree with you with regard to safety. Having been side swiped and flipped over onto the hood, I walked away without a scratch. The car saved my life. So for me , it has always been a safe car. And trust me, I drove that car!

As for driving " comfort" I found the 2002 had more legroom back then the most of the present day "motorcars". So you can stretch out your legs if need be. Secondly, I remember you didn't want to review this car, that steering wheel was inevitably replaced with a thicker and smaller diameter wheel to further establish that oneness with the ride. In addition, the driver's seat was preferably replaced with the Recaro Version. Just one other memory, the engine compartment allowed you to be a weekend warrior in terms of servicing your own car. I had two shop manuals that facilitated such. See, you got me started!

as a car reviewer, the 2018 m5 is kind of like the 2017 m5 which is kind of like the 2016 m5 which is kind of like the 2014 m5 which is kind of like the 2013 m5. Actually m5 from the last 10 years feels… relatively the same. You get more power and more electronic, in terms of driving feel. It has not change much since everything started being electronic. Hard to get emotional reviewing the same car over and over and over. This 2002 tii though was special in its days, it is special now. You dont get to drive one or even touch one everyday. It gets every car guy emotional.

Beautiful classic car. The old chrome bumpers are also an awesome eye catcher. It's interesting to see these sheets in the boot. I didn't really expect it in such an old car. Cars of that car had a simple design - if a car is good designed it doesn't need a lot of extas. You will see the simplicity of such old cars. German cars of that cars were also pretty down to the basics ... power steering and color glass is something that came up pretty late as a standard. I am an owner of an '83 Audi 80 ... compared with this orange fellow from BMW it is quite modern with its black plastic bumpers. But driving such old cars can be really a lot of fun and you can also chill out when driving it. It's always interesting to see how spacy such old cars. Nowadays cars are much bigger but not as spacy ... of course also due to some safety stuff. What I also love is how to look out of such a car. You can look pretty good out through of these big windows. Nowadays cars have much smaller windows especially if it is about the rear view. I can totally agree with you here about the driving experience with such old cars. You really focus on driving. You are driving with more attention, you feel the car. It's great to hear that BMW is caring about the owners of old cars to sell spare parts. If I am looking at Audi then there is tons of stuff that is no more available. At least there is not much getting broken because it is a very reliable car but I wish Audi would also care a bit more about those old cars. Petrol smell in the car is not always a standard. I had this issue with my Audi 80 twice ... first issue was a leaky hose in the motor compartment. The second time I didn't found any problem with the motor compartment and I thought "probably it's normal". Well, my VW garage is pretty old, the owner is 70+ years old and knows everything about these old cars and found the issue ... the hose where you fill in the gasoline was rough and needed to get replaced. Since then ... no more petrol smell. I am always surprised about my VW garage. So yesterday I was putting in my battery when it was flat by not using it this often in this rainy summer. Then the stupid screw to fix the battery was falling to somewhere. I just put out the metal thing that needs to get screwed in, it's a metal with three holes. When he saw me with this piece of metal he immediately did know what it is and what I need, haha. I assume he often had customers who had problem, haha. That's just something you will not experience with modern cars - nowadays all they do is connecting the car with the computer and reading error codes and then scrubbing their head, lol.

When I was a kid my neighbour had one od those. Same colour, same taillights but it had wide wheel arches like the 2002 Turbo. I was wondering were these wheelarches available on non turbo models or were they aftermarket on my neighbour's car.
