100 HP was a really good amount for the late 60s to mid 70s! Especially for something so lightweight.

I had the 4 door version of this when I was stationed in Germany, the model 2000. I had twins in 1983 and needed the extra 2 doors. It was a 1972, my first car. The original steering wheel was huge! I remember it being very light. It was a fun 4 speed manual. You always remember your first.

Thanks for this guys. I went seriously into debt in 1973 for a new 2002. I was 19 at the time, and was putting off college for a couple of years. In Oshawa, Camaro’s, Chevelle’s and Chevy Vans were the main ride for my buds. I was odd-man-out with the Bimmer, but I loved it. BTW, gotta have the round taillights, but this is a sweet car!

I bought a 2002 in 1976, sort of on a whim. I’d bought a Mini 1275GT but hated it. Was driving past a local garage in Hampshire, saw a BMW 2002 and pulled in. Didn’t know much about them but took it for a test drive and was hooked. For their time, they jumped out as a driver’s car, way above other small saloons. I did a trade on the spot. Drove all over UK and France. Wish I’d kept it.

awe, reminds me of moms 1976 2002 turbo. it was a purple lush blue. she adored her little baby though she had a 320i, and her beloved 1991 super celiac and 1974 triumph stag but she was head over heals for her 76 2002 turbo. she left it at her sisters house but couldn’t return to pick it up. moms heart broke when she found out her sister just left moms barely used 2002 to rot until it became a rusted mess. it sadly added to her depression that cost her her life. her 2002 was her play car. it was barely used and even as a child, it was obvious to me that the car that was over a decade old, to my 4 year old mind, was very new, loved and even i knew mom had modded some aspects while still leaving it in mostly original condition. i would like to think that in some other world, mom is still racing her little 02.

Owned and Restored three of these in a row, a '74, '76 (avoid the '75 due to emissions) and a '74tii which just resold on BaT in 2020 for $25,000. Excellent fun spacious cars to drive, but not durable. If you use them everyday, things will break - driveshafts/differentials/exhausts/seals/wheel bearings/couplers etc. Best upgrade needed is a fifth gear in manuals, which many swap out of a e30 3 series. This one on the shoot needs a ring/valve job - burning a lot of oil with the blue smoke. If buying, check for rust in trunk, shock towers, jack points, floor pans - they are terrible with rust.

These M10 engines tend to smoke on engine braking at higher RPM, when the valve stem seals are worn. Easy fix and not a critical problem. They also tend to run quite hot (cast iron block, mechanical fan), when driven hard, so that's something to look after. I almost boiled it on the race track, when I didn't pay attention and the coolant temperature was in the red zone for 12-15 kms. No harm done. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tqEW0TOXC0s.html It's funny that you mentioned the spongy brakes. They're rock hard, and have a definite biting point on mine (4 pot ATE calipers in the front from the factory). I've got DOT 5.1 brake fluid, but after all it's a 200000 kms, unrestored car.

Mine would always overheat at stop lights in the summer
@rotaryhungary
@rotaryhungary 3 года назад
@@rogernilson3986 Mine did that too, but I noticed during the rebuild this summer, that most of the coolant passages were clogged rock hard. After cleaning the block and the radiator, and assembling the engine, it did not overheat ever, even in 30°C stop and go with the original mechanical fan.
@tave9011

@rotaryhungary
@rotaryhungary 2 года назад
@@tave9011 They were simply replaced during the rebuild.
@nicholaszamelis9471
@nicholaszamelis9471 Год назад
@@tave9011 it’s not too bad but the heads gotta come off. And frankly if you’re gonna replace the stem seals, replace the stems too. In theory it’s possible to do a stem seal job without taking the head off but in my opinion you’re just making it harder on yourself to do less of a job. If you’re around Sonoma CA, call road rockets at Sonoma raceway. You want Bill.

I do love the production value, the commentary, the cinematography. I've been listening and watching to you guys for years, sent in a car debate to the podcast and bought a number of your films. One little teeny, tiny, gripe - overly epic music. Unfortunately its present with a lot of the videos. The music. 2:24-2:31. It sounds like an action movie, this is a car overview. I'm good with the ambient piano or light rock guitar... The epic stuff is good for when top gear is going to the north pole or reaching 250mph in a buggati... This... Is great. Great production value. Even top gear worthy shots. But its not crazy epic. Sorry guys, rant over.

People are often amazed by the room once they get in. It looks like a tiny box, but lots of head and foot room. People would also be amazed when I'd pull 4 or 5 tires out of the trunk. As for the brakes, I put the volvo 240 brakes (if you have the 5 line master cyl) on the front end and 81 320i brakes in the rear (only 1/4 inch clearence in the mag rims) That thing had great brakes. Steering should be great, unless you have the wrong rims and or need to adjust the front end.

In 1969 I became the second owner of an international orange BMW 2002ti, the European model, with twin Solex sidedraft carburetors, producing 120BHP. Fun to drive, but not reliable. The transmission, clutch, and radiator failed.

SLLYT None of those things are problems with them any more.

3:13 Originally had about 100HP, this one might pull 115HP.. LOL. What makes you think that? Looks like it runs like crap.

BWX just judging by the modifications/compression/etc. It actually runs very well! It's a daily in the summer months. Valves are a little old but m10s are very prone to smoking. Valve seals would do the trick but it's not worth fixing at this point. Only smokes when it's pushed really hard in the top end

BWX well yeah that's it haha engine braking after pushing it at 4000+ rpm

You mean engine breaking, which nearly puts as much load as throttling. You obviously have zero mechanical knowledge. My 76 does the exact same thing and has been nothing but great. dyno'd at 135 to the wheels with cam and dcoe webers.

Only downside to a car like this is the behemoth trucks and SUV on American roads today that would crush this like a paperbag that said my old 63 f100 stepside and 64 GTO wouldn't fare much better.

No, no, no. That’s too much 💨. It’s not just on the down-shifts. 🤔
